Internal vibration sensation - caused by stress??

Posted , 91 users are following.

I've found several forums where there have been posts from people experiencing this disconcerting feeling of an internal quivering or vibration but none of them are current, so I wanted to see if anyone else out there is having the same experience and can share an insight into what might be causing it.

I started to get this feeling of internal vibration when I was mainly lying in bed and then occasionally if I shifted position it might last for 30 seconds or so before disappearing. That was about 8 months ago. Now I feel it every night and during the day as well quite often. The other day after a short walk of a few hundred yards followed by a period of standing still it felt like the ground was vibrating  because it was in my feet. It seems to move around to different areas of the body - sometimes I feel it in my legs, an arm, torso - it's quite random but often felt when I've shifted position in bed. At first I thought it was circulatory but now I think it's probably neurological. I thought I was having palpitations but an ECG showed nothing abnormal. I've also had a full spine & brain MRI as I've been having other strange symptoms of occasional numbness and sensations of burning and cold areas of my arms/hands and legs/feet and a sore tongue which comes and goes and often feels like I've just cleaned my teeth with menthol toothpaste when I haven't. I thought I had all the signs of MS, but it hasn't been diagnosed. I've also had a number of blood tests for immune issues, evoked potentials and nerve conductivity tests. Nothing! The MRI does show a lot of wear to my cervical vertebrae and two anterior spondylolisthesis - one cervical, one lumbar, so I wonder if my spinal issues could be the cause. My neurologist was doubtful. He also couldn't explain the vibration sensation except to say that it can be caused by a migraine, which I certainly haven't had.

I just don't know where to go with this now.  My GP isn't interested and puts everything down to stress which I AM under it's certainly true to say, but I don't think she's right. I've had to pay for all my neuro investigations as a result because she won't refer me or do any more blood tests etc.  I'm trying homeopathy, osteopathy and acupuncture as I want to find something that will relieve these weird symptoms and prefer to avoid drugs if I can.

I'm 58, eat reasonably heathily, no alcohol, only 1 cup of coffee a day and my weight is normal. I broke my wrist badly at the end of August last year which is when my problems all seemed to start. i

I also wonder if the metal plate that was used to fix the fracture could be causing some kind of strange reaction.

If anyone else is having these symptoms please let me know if you've been able to identify the cause and how to deal with it.

I had those vibs . They sucked , but it was caused by vitamin D deficiency

My vitamin D levels are fine and I still get them. I do agree that any deficiencies will have an affect on the body.

I read several articles on MS and they said that there may be a correlation between low vitamin D levels and the worsening of MS symptoms. So ie MS symptoms do improve with more sunlight - sunlight of course being the best form of vit D.

    I think you're right Sally.

I think for whatever reason, our nervous systems become highly stimulated by stress, trauma, infection, illness, toxins, surgery and this sends our sympathetic nervous system into overdrive. I think we need to MAJORLY de-stress and do this in any and every way we can. Deep breathing, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, removing ourselves from or ridding ourselves of toxic people and situations etc. I think once we do this, our whole systems eventually relax and repair and the dizziness, tremors, migraines, allergies etc subside and eventually die away.

Here's to good health for us all 💕

Exactly. I think this is a type of neuropathy brought on by any one of the things you've mentioned. One thing I've been meaning to try is the Dynamic Neural Retraining System I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Pretty expensive to attend, but you can also order DVDs.

Thanks for your reply and your thoughts 😊

I haven't heard of that! I shall look it up now. I'm in Australia - so we don't have anything over here, especially here in Perth 😦

Wishing you a very Happy New Year & one filled with good health & LOADS of energy! 😉 🤩 😘

What a relief to have found this discussion. I have been having these exact same issues for a couple months now and they have been driving me crazy. I am also a 58 yr old woman . I thought the one symptom about the tongue cramps was odd, until I realized I have quite a few times in the last year been woken up thinking I had bit down very hard on the back of my tongue. The pain was excruciating but it passed quickly and I would just go back to sleep.

I was thinking MS, HD, PD and worried sick about it.

I also wondered if it was the collagen peptides I started taking a few months ago that might’ve triggered it.

Or that I had a dog that has been sick and I knew she would have to be put down soon, which was made worse by the fact that I just lost my dad 7 months ago. I ended up having to put her down two weeks ago. So maybe anxiety?

Or that I stopped hiking to spend more time with her and thought maybe it was lack of exercise.

It happens all night every night. wakes me up constantly. Sometimes I can hear a very light vibration on my pillow so i know it's strong enough to be causing a very slight external vibration. Stretching and moving around are the only things that help, but it only lessens the vibrations for a few minutes. I feel them more the less I move so I am only without them when being quite active. It's all so very exhausting. I have a dr. appt tomorrow and i'll update if they have anything interesting to say. Thank you so much for starting this discussion.

      Hi Maureen

All of us here can relate to what you're going through - unfortunately. It's a really horrible thing to experience.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your father and dog. That is very sad indeed 😦

It sounds like this thing is very much stress related, hormone related, mold related or surgery/toxin/anesthetic related. All in all I think it's all caused by or brought on by trauma of some kind.

Have you had any surgery or dental work done lately?

Good luck with your doctor. I always read through everybody's comments - because you never know what you can learn and who you can help 😃 That's my mentality anyway.

Hope you feel better soon. Let us know how you go!

      hello,

this all sounds very similar to something I'm currently experiencing! I'm 36 years old and I'll be honest I have a history of GAD. I've gone through some tough times and experienced physical symptoms that doctors have investigated and have always come back clean and eventually they subside. however, i have been through a stressful situation over Christmas- my children are changing schools, I had my mother in law visiting for Christmas, school holidays always throw me out and I was trying to overload myself with alot of things. since she has left I've been having muscle twitches all over my body which I've had before in the past but the most concerning thing atm is a vibrating/bubbling/quivering sensation mainly on the left side of my body. I feel it almost all the time, I can have moments where I feel like it's gone but then it starts up again. I have heart palpitations too but they have subsided a great deal and really sweaty feet. I have been struggling to get a good night's sleep with it all so this is probably going to accelerate it. I've contemplated visiting my GP for further investigations but that in itself makes me anxious, because I've always been in the past and it's always turned into nothing. I do feel anxious and I'm trying to de-stress and calm down and I tell myself I always get through it and come out the other end fine. I'm just in a bit of a funk! I needed to just let it out. I've read this threat and relate soo much to ever single post. I hope your all slowly recovering in some way or have the answers you need. xxx I'm hoping I can get back to my normal self soon

      Hi Sami

I'm so sorry you've been going through all of that, I really feel for you 😦 I do hope you start feeling better soon & best of luck with your children changing schools ❤

I have had some struggles & challenges in my life (too many to go through here lol) and I've also had Crohn's disease for 19 years. To learn about everything and to help myself, I've researched so much over the years and have talked to many people, doctors, naturopaths, integrative doctors etc. For a while there I was thinking of studying naturopathy myself and I also started up a support group on facebook for inflammatory bowel disease sufferers.

Anyway Sami I digressed (sorry about that), but what I'm trying to say is that in my experience so far - and in my opinion, I think you should go and see an integrative doctor and get everything checked - especially your hormones. Because during my research over the years (and my experience with my housemate's health issues too), sweaty feet often indicates something to do with the thyroid. So my advice would be to see somebody that can and will do thorough hormone testing with you - and testing you by either saliva or urine, because blood tests are known to be inaccurate.

General doctors/practitioners haven't studied these areas in-depth so they're not knowledgeable enough or qualified enough to fully understand the whole scope of hormones and they don't know about their more effective and accurate testing via saliva or urine (they only know blood testing).

Also, those tests ^ and once you begin supplementing, you want your hormone levels to be ABOVE the 'normal range' = to feel better. Ie we want optimal, not 'normal' (range). Normal is too vague an area to compare against. You wouldn't expect your doctor to feel comfortable or good wearing size 7 shoes if their shoe size is size 10 - even if size 7 is within the 'normal' range.

Anyway, let me know what you think and let us know how you go if you decide to go and get any testing etc done 😉

from what I've read most of us have gotten our vitamin levels checked and the tests have all come back normal.

thank you Loiuse. I had some blood tests done - vitamins, liver function, testing for metals, thyroid, etc - and everything comes back normal. I have been hypothyroid since my 20's. I have been taking HRT for a few years now. I started taking vitamins and collagen peptides about six months ago and at first I thought that might be what was causing the problem. I stopped taking everything though for weeks and still had the. I am feeling much more hopeful reading in this thread that some people seem to have gotten better. This has been going on long enough now that it’s no longer as terrible as it was. It’s almost a new normal for me. My main fear is Parkinson’s, so anything else feels almost tolerable. I think you said you stopped feeling the vibrations? if so are they still gone? if it weren't for the trouble hearing (I already have Meniere's and this has made the tinnitis so much worse) and the almost complete loss of short term memory, I wouldn't mind it nearly as much.

Thank you for sharing your own experiences. I totally sympathise and can identify with what you've gone through. I also had a string of stressful experiences that were very similar over the past 10 years and I think that they basically stacked up on after the other and overwhelmed my nerves/nervous system somehow. I had a stresfull job anyway, then my long term partner and I split up, the following year I was made redundant from stressful job - not bad but a big change, the year after my lovely 100 year old dad died, two years later my dog died unexpectedly, later that year I nearly lost my sight in one eye and had to have surgery to reinstate it, the year after that I fell and badly broke my wrist and had to have a plate inserted to fix it. After that my body went into a kind of shock the like of which I have never experienced. I could hardly eat without feeling sick, I hated all sweet food, had terrible back pain and extreme nerve hypersensitivity so that the little tufts in my mattress caused such discomfort that I had to make sure I didn't lie on them - like the princess and the pea! This is when the strange sensations started as well. The last straw came a few months later that year when my current partner who I've known since the 80s suddenly became seriously ill and I didn't expect him to live. Thankfully he did after treatment but is now disabled and I look after him. Voila. So all those events contributed I suspect.

Health-wise I've had sleep apnoea for years and a lot of palpitations but for the last couple of years have got treatment for both which I think has helped to improve things. I'm pleased to report that the vibrations are much reduced and only sporadic for the 12 months or so. So if like me all the doctors tell you that there's nothing seriously wrong after the relevant tests I think I will have to concur that stress and anxiety are to blame for these frightening symptoms. Having said that it's often impossible to change the situations we have to cope with so all you can do is to look after yourself as best possible and to try to do some activities to help manage the stress - yoga for instance. I wish you all the best and hope one day like me you will suddenly realize that it's been a while and you haven't felt the buzzing.

Hello there, I can relate. For me I had it on and off, never gave it attention , it was nothing for me. Then since this COVID-19, as we are in lockdown, my anxiety was at the roof at some point, I just went to bed and i felt the vibration in my right leg in the middle. I gave it attention and it never stopped. Feeling this since 4 days now, if i move and walk i don't feel it, if I sit on a chair I do feel it, If i lay down in bed i do feel it a bit but it passes. If im distracted working, or cleaning in the house or having fun, I don't even realize is there.

I had 2 appointments with one neurologist via Virtual Cam, and she didnt tell me anything basicaly, then i contacted a psychiatrist , and she told me more and answered all of my questions. She said that this can be caused by anxiety, and also I eat a lot of bananas, since bananas have potasium it can resul in ehart palpitations "what i have too" and hand feet sensations. Now i will stop eating that much and drink more water and have a good diet a bit, i do get distracted by the feeling when sitting down, at this moment im feeling it too, is like a "vrrrrruuum" feeling, cant even put it in words correctly. Im still not sure if is anxiety and I'm a big hypochondriac. Looking at MS and all the serious illness. Hope for the best. I will update if anything changes. Take care and stay safe guys. Any updates on your side?

The vibrations continued to get worse and there was no time I didn't feel them. They got so bad the bed would lightly vibrate against the wall or my hand would be vibrating against the bed when I woke up. It was waking me up multiple times a night and it was miserable. A strong stretch or moving around helped. There is a lot of anxiety here in the US because of what is happening in politics and i am thinking that is the initial trigger. One day I sat and cried for hours about losing my dad and Bindi and that night the vibrations were completely gone. They slowly came back over the next couple days. They're not as bad now by far but are still a constant. I am really leaning toward anxiety at this point.

hey maureen sorry to hear that..i ve been experiencing internal tremors.vibrations.buzzing in my whole body.24/7 for 1 month already..my arms.legs.stomach.chest area.head.neck.lips.the tremors will be bad if im eating or doing something..i dont know i become so nervous if im doing something.it keeps triggering my panic attacks..i think i have essential tremors..pls look into it..thanks

Sounds the same but mine seems to affect different areas of my body at different times. I can feel is very slightly everywhere but one place will be much stronger. The worst are when it settles on my lips/mouth or lungs/heart (which also makes my voice vibrate 😦 ) but it really doesn't bother me as much any more. A long strong stretch will usually calm it down enough to go back to sleep or be able to ignore it. It does wake me up a lot but I can fall back to sleep after stretching. I've just come to accept that it is going to be there so it doesn't bother me near as much. Unfortunately hiking makes it worse and I love hiking but I only hope it doesn't get worse permanently. I hope yours calms down a bit as mine did.

Hi guys, I've had the vibrations that were constant for months. Had all the tests done and even ended up in the ER too. Thought it MS or essential tremors, possibly Parkinson's. Everything came back normal. One day I was sitting at the computer and saw an add for a PT company that could help with all kinds of back problems. They had a wellness check really cheap. $28.00, and if they couldn't help you then they refunded it back to you.

Well to make a long story short, I went. What did I have to loose. I told them my symptoms and let them also know I have anxiety problems. The owner was my pt. He asked me a couple of questions, one being if I sat in front of the computer for lone periods of time. Yes I did. He had told me that this could be a big possibility of the cause. It messes up so much of the back and spine and effects the whole body. My chiropractor had told me this too and that my nervous was misfiring. I too have panic disorder along with GAD plus a few other things. Ended going to pt and within a week I was able to sleep almost all through the night. I really thought it was a bunch of whowe but I am better today than I have been in a long while. The part that they worked on was/is called the psoas muscles the multifidus and several others. I also find out that the more stress there is the worse it gets so I'm thinking that anxiety is also a part of it. I try and do my exercises that I was taught (and they are shut down because of the virus) and try to do some type of meditation. Sometimes if we can keep ourselves calm the better off we become. Hope this helps.

Thank you!! I have often wondered if it was nerve issues. Last year I was seeing a therapist for a pain under my shoulder blade. I had had it for a year or so and couldn't get any relief with therapy or stretching or resting. If I was active (hiking, lifting) it was better but as soon as I stopped moving it was back. Like you I work a computer job so I'm rarely moving during most of the day. I finally started using a tens unit and that worked wonders but I had to have it on most of the day and night. Then one day I reached for something above me and there was a strong 'snap' that felt like a huge rubber band snapping in my back. After the shock of it wore off (just minute or so) I realized the pain was finally gone. It was a huge relief. But then a few weeks later I woke up with a feeling of a soft current running thru me which has turned into this constant vibration/tremor. I've often wondered if they were related. Maybe when this quarantine is over I'll find a chiropractor. Thank you for the information!

I am not sure how to reply to the whole thread, so I chose a random comment to reply to.

I developed a vibration, mainly in my torso, this past November 2020. I had never experienced it before but it was bad enough to wake me at night. So I’ve really only had the vibration for the past 3 months or so.

Anyway, somewhat by chance, I had an endoscopy scheduled for my relentless random acid reflux. The gastroenterologist did not find anything unusual to cause the reflux but he did find that I had H PYLORI bacteria in my esophagus.

I have no idea how long I’d had it, but I don’t think for long bc I had unusual aggravated lymph node symptoms under my armpits only since about September 2020, which is when I think I contracted the H PYLORI.

Anyway, long story short. I took 2 weeks of antibiotics to kill the H PYLORI mixed with acid suppressor and voila, no more vibrations.

I looked it up, H PYLORI causes system wide inflammation that can manifest in a variety of ways from one person to the next.

Getting rid of H PYLORI is a whole process but I’m glad the first round of antibiotics took care of the vibrations. I’m not sure the h pylori is gone, since you have to wait about 2 months to retest. I will retest at the end of March 2021, so we’ll see.

I hope this helps everyone in this thread. NB, if possible, get an endoscopy to get a biopsy (tissue sample) of your esophagus or stomach. I know your doctor will insist that a stool test will be sufficient to test for H PYLORI but that is the least reliable test. Go for an H PYLORI breath test if you can’t get an endoscopy!

And when you retest after antibiotics, also insist on getting another endoscopy! You need to get rid of the H PYLORI, it can lead to serious neurological issues.

Hope this information is helpful. Good luck to you all.
