Internal vibration sensation - caused by stress??

I've found several forums where there have been posts from people experiencing this disconcerting feeling of an internal quivering or vibration but none of them are current, so I wanted to see if anyone else out there is having the same experience and can share an insight into what might be causing it.

I started to get this feeling of internal vibration when I was mainly lying in bed and then occasionally if I shifted position it might last for 30 seconds or so before disappearing. That was about 8 months ago. Now I feel it every night and during the day as well quite often. The other day after a short walk of a few hundred yards followed by a period of standing still it felt like the ground was vibrating  because it was in my feet. It seems to move around to different areas of the body - sometimes I feel it in my legs, an arm, torso - it's quite random but often felt when I've shifted position in bed. At first I thought it was circulatory but now I think it's probably neurological. I thought I was having palpitations but an ECG showed nothing abnormal. I've also had a full spine & brain MRI as I've been having other strange symptoms of occasional numbness and sensations of burning and cold areas of my arms/hands and legs/feet and a sore tongue which comes and goes and often feels like I've just cleaned my teeth with menthol toothpaste when I haven't. I thought I had all the signs of MS, but it hasn't been diagnosed. I've also had a number of blood tests for immune issues, evoked potentials and nerve conductivity tests. Nothing! The MRI does show a lot of wear to my cervical vertebrae and two anterior spondylolisthesis - one cervical, one lumbar, so I wonder if my spinal issues could be the cause. My neurologist was doubtful. He also couldn't explain the vibration sensation except to say that it can be caused by a migraine, which I certainly haven't had.

I just don't know where to go with this now.  My GP isn't interested and puts everything down to stress which I AM under it's certainly true to say, but I don't think she's right. I've had to pay for all my neuro investigations as a result because she won't refer me or do any more blood tests etc.  I'm trying homeopathy, osteopathy and acupuncture as I want to find something that will relieve these weird symptoms and prefer to avoid drugs if I can.

I'm 58, eat reasonably heathily, no alcohol, only 1 cup of coffee a day and my weight is normal. I broke my wrist badly at the end of August last year which is when my problems all seemed to start. i

I also wonder if the metal plate that was used to fix the fracture could be causing some kind of strange reaction.

If anyone else is having these symptoms please let me know if you've been able to identify the cause and how to deal with it.

I have internal vibrations in both hands mainly noticeable after physical exertion including walking and moving around in bed that settle down shortly after I get still. Anxiety also kicks them off now as well. It started about a year ago in my right hand and now the left hand is affected.

I am 46 and truly believe I'm slowly developing Parkinsons mainly because I also have REM sleep disorder and twitching fingers on occasion. I've had all the standard neurological tests which did indicate peripheral neuropathy as well.

I certainly hope I am wrong about this, but I guess time will tell.

    Best wishes all.

For me it stopped for 3 days, then it started again, when I stand i dont feel it at all, if I sit on the chair I start feeling it, if I'm distracted I can't feel it. Today I had an appointment with a neurologist virtual clinic, and he said that I don't need to stress to much and just have some tests, will have an MRI as well. I hope is nothing serious and is just anxiety. I'm 27 BTW

There is a cause for everything that goes on in the body. If we can figure out what the root cause of these vibrations is, we can address it. Forums like this and others are a good way for people to pool their experiences and try to figure out what we have in common.

Thank you for sharing. Good luck with your tests - I hope they'll be able to put your mind at rest. My partner has peripheral neuropathy for which no underlying cause has been found and he also gets the twitching in his fingers that you've mentioned. He has lost a lot of sensation in his feet over the last few years and some in his hands. I also have some PN in my left foot. Your consultant should investigate your PN to see if a cause can be found but I suspect the vibrations may be an associated symptom. Take care and please update if you have any news.

    Hi Sally,

Wow! reading all these messages has really offered me some comfort. Thank you all for sharing your experience.

I have recently started experiencing muscles twitches and internal vibrations just a week now. I can honestly say that my mind went into over drive trying to figure out whats happening. The Dr prescribed me Vit D and iron because these where low.

The vibrations started after the twitches. The week before i did quite a bit of exercise so I thought that might have caused but i am getting the vibrations in both feet, legs, especially my inner thigh. i feel it more when i stand still or sit. At first it was just at nighy now it is all day.

Last year i was in a very emotionally draining relationship. Which caused me a great deal of stress so maybe months later the effects presents itself.

i have been taking vitamin b complex, vit d and iron.

I am normally very healthy. but the relationship knocked me!!

Things that i am doing to help myself

    • Meditate as often as i can. I do Heart Brain coherence meditation - Stress causes the heart to send stress signal to the brain. which creates a release of stress hormones. so heart / brain meditation helps to bring both into coherence. I also listen to Alpha brainwave sounds to relax me at night, it requires for you to breath deeply. This enables me to calm down and the vibrations stop at night.
    • I do Qi Gong breathing in the morning - which builds up your life force energy and keeps me calm
    • I also having energy healing to clear any energy blockages.

having these vibrations are causing me negative emotions but i truly believe that our bodies are a magical machine that has the power to heal it self under the conditions.

Although i am scared because noone wants to be ill.

    hi Sally.

I'm 56 and six months ago worke up regularly with an odd vibrating feeling in my torso for weeks. I quickly checked my pulse which was normal but it felt really odd. I had just been diagnosed with sleep Apnoa and it went away after using CPAP until a few weeks ago. I did have a few strange bouts of vibration in my head, which lasted 3-5 days. over a period of four months however.

10 days ago, I woke up with that familiar vibrating feeling twice then from then to now, I have had a deep internal vibration in my tummy (left side) which can spread out when I am lying down. It comes in waves and lasts about 20-30 seconds then my body feels quiet until the next one, a minute or two later. I feel it all the time and during sleep. my anxiety heightens it completely and I am so scared its something terrible. It feels like my whole nervous system is broken.
