Is anyone going through a menopause 12/13 yrs after full hysterectomy and HRT?

I had a full hysterectomy at 36 (not 51) - I was put on HRT because of my age at the time of the operation. I took the advice of my GP and weaned myself off of HRT about 2 yrs ago - I'm still getting hot flushes several times a day - my moods are up and down - I have headaches and fairly recently noticed slight heart palpitations. I continually have an anxious feeling - I've been to GP who did blood pressure etc and said that it was all good but is referring me for a 24 hr heart monitor but doesn't expect it to pick up anything. I feel like I am constantly saying how unwell I feel - I suffer from constipation, aches and pains in joints and I'm finding it hard to concentrate at work - I just want to feel human again! Apologies if this sounds like me feeling sorry for myself - I'm usually the one helping everyone else to deal with their traumas but I need to focus on me just now - and figure out how I'm going to get through this. I would be very grateful for any info, advice or words of wisdom as my faith in medicine is waning.

    Hi Aileen,

I too had a total hysterectomy in 2001 at the age of 35 due to endometriosis. I was put straight on tibolone hrt the next day after operation, 2 tablets a day. I continued with this dose for about 4 years before a doctor told me I should only need 1 tablet a day so I took 1 tablet a day up until 4 years ago. I decided to start reducing my dose due to doctor telling me I was now getting to the 'risk stage'. The menopause starts to kick in naturally in your 50's so I decided to reduce by a tablet a year. I had many hot flushes here and there and night sweats. I am now on 3 tablets a week, mon, wed an thur. The flushes came thick and fast for a week or 2, but now they are sparodic, maybe a couple a day or few more if hot weather, I got pins and needles, numbness in fingers, palpitations, constipation, pains in sides and moods  swinging all over the place! This was quite bad for about 4 months but I now feel like it's all calming down. I explained to my workplace that I couldn't help the different faces I was pulling due to being up, down, angry or ecstatic so as not to offend anyone! haha. I get dizzy feelings like i'm away with the fairys, which is quite nice really compared to the other feelings! headaches have reduced along with the numbness and pins and needles. I had a full body MOT due to chest pains and breathing but all was clear so I can only assume it's a side effect. I haven't gained weight, I am a healthy 10 stone, 5ft 7 and a half inches tall, my hair hasn't fallen out, I take tablespoon of linseed with seeds and berrys in it ( available from health shops and supermarkets ) every day with cod liver oil in a drink of juice, no other medication at all. This helps with the constipation though it bloats a bit and stomach and sides ache now and then. This the doctor told me is due to scarring inside from previous operations ( I have had scans for this ) but I do feel like as long as I know that this is all just explainable side effects, I can cope! It does get better, just accept it and go with it and you'll get through, I hope this helps you and anybody else worrying about symptoms though do get double checked with a doctor just to put your mind at rest x p.s I'm not a diet or health food person, I eat fruit, veg, crisps, curry, steak, chips an anything else, just everyday foods!

    Hi Aileen,

I had my last son in November 1983 and had to have a hysterectomy in March 1984, at the age of 30, as I had had heavy and prolonged periods for a while, even before my last son was born. I thought that having another baby would help; although that wasn’t the only reason we had him, in fact they only became worse.

It was soon after this that I began to have the first signs of hot flushes and mood swings, although I had had mood swings every month when my period was due. My G.P. gave me a tablet (the name of which escapes me) and it helped for a while but then had to be increased until I was on the highest dose and it wasn’t working anymore. It was at this time that she put me on HRT.

I had to come off of it [HRT] in 2007 when I was diagnosed with angina and the pharmacist at the hospital said that I shouldn’t take it anymore.

Since then my hot flushes have been continuous and I have tried many herbal remedies, including Evening Primrose Oil and Menoleve and although they work to start with they seem to stop after a while.

My husband always knows when one is coming on because he can see the redness start on my neck and spread up to my face and then then the fan goes on.  I call it my tropical events and I say that I have my own central heating if people comment on the redness. it used to cause great amusment when I was at work and i used to be dripping with sweat, I used to wash my face and neck with lavender wet wipes to cool myself down.

I did ask my G.P. if there was anything else that she could prescribe for me but the only thing she could suggest was drugs for depression and anxiety which might help but they may make me feel worse. She also said that losing weight might help but that is easier said than done. I am now 62 and I am still getting the hot flushes and mood swings, I get palpitations which don’t help with the angina and the blood pressure.

I get plenty of exercise as I go swimming 3-4 times a week and I also do aqua aerobics as well but the weight is stubbornly staying put.

I'm 29 full hysterectomy, I do get dizzy out of no where , mild hot flashes that make me sweat like crazy, constipation, I start crying or get extremely emotional over the smallest thing. I had a make doctor who said I was fine just take Motrin... this was before I had hysterectomy. Changed doctors found a woman doctor in her 50s who fully understood my pain. I had aden... not sure on spelling but I'm sure you know. And the begging stage of ovarian cancer. Bottom line if I didn't change doctors bc my male doc didn't listen at all I wouldn't have known about the cancer till later. I fully believe that a lot of male doc don't understand completely. Bc they have never experienced it. I Google good female docs on my area found one with great reviews and.on my first visit she sent me for a whole bunch of tests... all I can.do.is.thank her over and over again! I'm externally lucky tohave not had to deal with pain of ovarian cancer. I'm so happy she believed me. I whole heartedly believe it was all because she was a woman

    Hi Aileen,

I also had a full hysterectomy (incl removal of ovaries) 4 years ago. They put me on Evorel 50 HRT straight away. Was fine for first 2 years (apart from a bad stitch like pain I would get every couple of days for a few hours with discomfort when urinating) then I suddenly started getting all of these horrible symptoms, shortness of breath, anxiety, dizziness, pressure in head, confusion. Memory loss, aches and pains, hot flushes, difficulty in sleeping. After multiple tests to rule out the 'horrible' stuff and from talking to woman realised it's menopausal.

Like you I've learned that I can't control it...the symptoms come at different intensity throughout the day....I just try to look after my health as best I can, relax with meditation etc..I've learned there are amazing herbs that support you in menopause, and certain foods (such as yam, cassava) that have natural hormones, so I consistently and relentlessly have a routine like this to try and keep me positive....i also work from home some days as the office is not well ventilated which brings it all on very severely (a lady who is an employment law specialist reminded me employers have a duty of care to menopausal woman)

I hope you are feeling better a year on...I'm still struggling but dealing with it as best I can

    Xx

Hi Aileen, I really know how u feel. It is so crazy, I am tired. I hurt most of the time in therapy now. Your b vitamins will help and vitamin d. My mother use to take lydia E pinken which is a vitamin tonic. Be as active as u can but get rest also. Stay away from sweets your mind will run. I have migraines I take exedrin migraine. For dryness just get a cream or use an oil, ( E, mineral, Vaseline) not enternaly.try camomile tea it calms. I've read that magnesium deficiency will cause you to have heart palpitations. Try not to let things aggrievate u. Hope this helps you. Trust me I feel you totally. Be blessed and hang in there. God loves you and so do i! Lee

I had full hysterectomy at age 38 and was put on oestradiol pellet implants.  Wonderful things.  Then they stopped making them and I moved on to patches which were not so good (rashes, the effect ran out early, etc).  If I forgot to replace it, within a few hours, I would feel a wave of anxiety, or depression, or arrythmia.  I then found a compound chemist who makes the pellets for implants.  I do find that a 12 month one runs out in 6 months (they used to run out in 9 months - my body needs that oestrogen!).

I am now 65 and I am not going off hrt for anyone.  They don't know what they are talking about, those that demand it.  They still believe in flawed research.

Search out the benefits of staying on oestrogen (look for the book The Wisdom of Menopause in your local library, or ask them to get it in for you), and go armed to your  dr, or another one, if necessary, with this information.

You do not have to suffer menopause.  That was for the previous generation who often died young from the issues to health that it causes.  Some of us still need hrt, and some of us don't.  So don't let the 'don'ts' make you feel like you have to be one of them.

AILEEN1962, I ALSO HAD A TOTAL ABD. HYST. AT AGE 36 FOR SEVERE ENDOMETRIOSIS. I'M A RETIRED RN WHO SPECIALIZED IN CARDIAC MUCH OF MY NURSING. I TOO WAS ON ESTROGEN FOR MANY YEARS, WENT OFF FOR 2 YEARS. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AND YOU ARE HAVING AND YOU CAN ADD TO IT -  ANXIETY AND OCCASIONALLY SHORT-TEMPEREDNESS (I AM ASHAMED TO SAY). FOR THE SAKE OF MY LOVED ONES I WENT BACK ON ESTROGEN AND HAVE REMAINED ON IT. I'M SOON TO BE 72 YRS OLD. MUCH OF MY ANXIETY AND OTHER PROBLEMS LIGHTENED SOME BUT NOT COMPLETELY. I GOT HOLD OF MY TEMPER (BUT THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DUE TO MY PRAYER LIFE). I WOULD LOVE TO TRY COMING OFF OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT AGAIN AS I BLAME IT (POSSIBLY VERY UNFAIRLY) FOR MY MIGRAINES AND WEIGHT GAIN AND ARTHRITIS. I WAS ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR SOME ADVICE OUT HERE FOR SOMEONE WHO CAME OFF IT AT MY AGE.

I SEE NO HARM IN HAVING GONE BACK ON HRT WHEN I DID AND I THINK IT PROBABLY SAVED MY HUSBANDS NERVES, HE WAS VERY UNDERSTANDING AND KIND THROUGH IT. I CAN PLAY BACK IN MY MIND HOW I WAS ACTING AND REALIZE HOW VERY BLESSED I AM TO HAVE SUCH AN UNDERSTANDING HUSBAND. THE HRT RETURNED ME TO MYSELF IN A VERY SHORT TIME AND I'D NOT WANT TO EVER GO BACK TO WHO I WAS WITHOUT IT. COME TO THINK OF IT, AS I WRITE THIS I JUST MAY HAVE ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION. TALK IT OVER WITH A GOOD GYN DOCTOR. I HAVE TO ADD THAT WHILE ON HRT I HAD A NUMBER OF YEARS AT A GOOD HEALTHY WEIGHT RANGE. NOW THAT I'M RETIRED, I MISS MORE MEALS AND THAT'S NOT NECESSARILY GOOD FOR WT CONTROL EITHER.  WISH YOU ALL THE BEST, AILEEN.

Catherine, so wonderful to hear you are happily still using oestrogen at age 72.

It is possible you are unfairly blaming weight gain and arthritis on oestrogen.  You would probably have been worse off without it.  Sugar and starchy foods are the problems with weight gain.  We just don't use up all the energy anymore and it turns to fat.  I have eliminated both sugars and starchy foods (bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, etc.) from my diet and found my waist again.  Those foods also cause fatty liver which increases your ferritin levels.

Have you had an Iron Studies blood test in the last year or so?  Your ferritin levels may be high from all those years of not menstruating and this can cause arthritis.  Not to mention, cough, cough, old age.  Ok let's leave out the old bit and just say 'age'.  Gps are forever blaming everything on our age.

When my oestrogen slips low, I immediately feel anxiety and agitation too, and I don't want to go there either.  As for migraines, as I have no experience with them, I have no answers.  Although some people with iron overload do get migraines.

Let us know how you go.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 31, 32 years ago.(1985) I wasn't put on HRT straight away. It wasn't until a few years later that they decided that I may be starting the change and started me on clonidine for hot flushes. A few years later my G.P. started me on HRT. In 2005 I started getting palpertations and my G.P. sent me to see a cardiologist who did varius tests and discovered I had Angina and a my ocardial bridge which apparantly had been there since birth, because of this I was told by a pharmasist that I should stop taking HRT. This was duely done by my G.P. and nothing else was considered to give me. Since then I have suffered with hot flushes several times a day, they completly overwelm me at times and the only thing I can do is sit down and put the fan on . I have the fan on all night as I get so hot at times and I get completly drenced and have to change my bedclothes quiet frequently, I get mood swings and with my husband being ill at the moment I feel completly out of sorts at times. I've mentioned all this to my G.P. and she says that the only tablets she could put me on were for anxiety which would make me feel worse. Sometimes I feel that nothibg could make me feel worse than I do at the moment. I know exactly how you feel and nobody seems to want to do nything and I am left to fend for myself. I take Evening Primrose Oil and Menolieve I even have a magnet that fits inside my knickers but non of them seem to help very much.

Did the cardiologist say you should stop using hrt?  Investigate this further, especially regarding the use of oestradiol oestrogen - it is bioidentical.  You should not have suffer so much.

Been there done that when I had an undiagnosed pituitary gland tumour which made my oestrogen ineffective.  It was hell for 6 years till I was sent to an endocrinologist.

I had angina at times and arrythmia caused by haemochromatosis, but I still use oestradiol oestrogen.  It is a life saver.
