Is anyone in the world still taking Dosulepin??

HI,

I was wondering if anyone can help me here? I have been taking the tricyclic antidepressant dosulepin for the past 12 years. Last year I started reading stuff on the internet about it causing heart problems for people and that it wasn't being prescribed anymore. My doctor had never mentioned this to me. But I was worried so I went to my doctor to ask if I should change to another newer pill. She said she thought it was a good idea and switched me onto mirtazapine. To cut a long story short my anxiety and depression rocketed and I thought I was going to die so after a month I had no choice but to go back on dosulepin again. I had deteriorated so much that it literally took 4 months before I started to feel in any way well again.

Anyway I have now been back on dosulepin for 5 months and I know that I will have to take it for the rest of my life as it is the only drug that can help me. But I am starting to worry about the fact that NOONE seems to be prescribed it nowadays and everything on the internet seems to relate to how dangerous it is. I am frightened that I am on a drug that might give me a heart attack.

The doctor says I can have an EGC to check my heart but even if it comes back ok I think I will still worry about the fact that I have to take it daily for ever.

Please is there anyone on here that Is on dosulepin or another of the tricyclic's and if so do you have any information on the associated heart risks?

Thank you

Lisa

Been to see my GP this morning and she is happy for me to continue taking Dosulepin as this suits me but if I wanted she could change me over to Mertazepine. She said they were conducting trials on different medications to see if there was a link to Alzheimer's but currently it is fine to take Dosulepin but not if you had been diagnosed with dementia. I am happy to continue taking this medication as it works for me and had no problems getting a supply of 25 mgs and 75 MG's tablets.

Hi, I was just looking up *Dosulepin* when I came across your discussion - I have just started on these and all I can say is that so far they have transformed my daily living, I must addmitt that after reading some of the points raised that I am slightly concerned - however as with all medication there is always side effects, I will now be asking my GP if these are safe to continue - I hope so as I have tried Mirtazapine before to no avail. Hope this has eased some of your concern.

    Hi Lisa362

Dosulapine is avaible in 25mg and 75mg in Hampshire my chemist keeps a supply for me but always have to wait for the full perscription, they are confident that they will be able to get it still. I suffered terrible until I tried dosulapine I'm still on 100mg a day was on 225mg! they other ones make me very angry oldly, However Lateley I have had a few heart issues (also runs in family) and have to have full bloods done this week. I have propananol as calmers if needed managed quite well . If the other types dont help you Tell! the doctor they are available and/or speak to your chemist they will be in a better place to let you know. My chemist is aware of the phasing out of them but tells me not to worry, good luck

Hi Lisa, I see this discussion has gone on for some time. I am in the UK and have been on Dosulepin for 14 years. I take 1 x 75mg at night and have had no problems. My GP regularly checks my bp etc. but has raised no concerns.

If it helps at all I have a pre existing heart condition, not related to Dosulepin and I am sure if it was the cause of heart problems I certainly would not be prescibed it!!

I think you will be fine and hope this helps, so YES there are people in the world still taking this medication (me at least)!

    Take Care xx

      Hi Catherine,

I'm also in the UK. You should analyse your blood tests and blood pressure yourself as the doctors I've seen here always tell me things are fine even when I've found by researching it that I had high blood pressure and I was close to the high or low ranges that are said to be normal. Without checking these things and if I still lived the same lifestyle some of these blood test could have moved above or below the healthy range but by changing my diet and exercise routines I'm now mid range with everything on my most recent complete blood test.

I was prescribed dolsulepin 6 weeks ago for low pressure headaches due to spinal fluid leaks. I take just 50mg a day and it has helped my head and it's also helping with anxiety that I never really realised I had. I've only to take it for 4 months though. I had slightly high blood pressure just before I was prescribed it and now I've lowered that to a normal level by eating and exercising better so it hasn't affected my heart badly; it's possible my neurologist thought taking it for longer than four months could cause negative affects as he made it clear that I had to lower the dose and stop taking it after 4 months.

I was also on Mirtazapine for anxiety/depression/insomnia for a few year and it worked perfectly execept for making my lips swell a bit. I took it for a few years, then stopped for two years and I was fine till one winter I felt depressed again but that time I only took it for 6 months (that was 6 years ago) and now I control depression with exercise and diet and by doing a job I like in the fitness industry and will never need Mirtazapine again, even though it was a good drug for me when I needed it...before I had it the doctor tried me on things like prozac but nothing like that affected me in any way.

I hope you find a better way to treat your illness.

    Good luck

I should ad; I was prescribed Dolsulepin because Mirtazapine were still making me drowsy like a zombie after 6 weeks and the neurologist said Dolsulepin would be less sedative as I've found them to be.

Hi Lisa. I started taking dosulepin when I was 22 & it was still known as dothiapin. I am now 46 & still taking 225mg a day, and like you, I will be taking this for the rest of my life.

About 7 years ago my consultant said it was an old drug & there were more modern ones available. So I basically went through every antidepressant available before being put back on dosulepin again, as for me it's the only one that actually works. I also take 7.5mg of zopiclone as well when I need it.

I understand your concerns about side effects - but some of these are very rare & the pharmaceutical companies have to list everything to cover themselves. Apart from excessive daytime drowsiness the main side effect for me is that I do get a very dry mouth, and the benefits of taking dosulepin far outweigh the risks of my not being on it.

    Hi Lisa,

I've been on dosulepin for 10 years at least. I occasionally have trembling hands but that's nothing compared to what I'm like without it. My doctor tried me on a different one which, as with your experience, made me ill. I have annual checks for glaucoma as my sister has it, but so far so good. It works for me so I'll keep taking it.
