is it likely you can take Vagifem for 20 years??

Saw my  menopause consultant yesterday.  Have come to the conclusion that I know more than she does, thanks to this site and the internet.

She confirmed that I know have VA for the rest of my life but not to worry I can use the Vagifem indefinitely.  Now seriously how likely is that?  I am 60 and say I get to 80 or more I think it is very unlikely that I will be able to take this for 20 or more years.

When I said this she just went mmmm see what you mean and changed the subject.  She had no further ideas or new medicines or anything else and hadn't even  heard of the KEY E suppositories which for me are a God send.

I think she was sent on a one day seminar.  So disappointing as I was hoping to get answers.

Hi Linda. I have been on vagifem now for about 5 years with no ill effects I am 67. I don't know how long we can stay on vagifem but it's working ok for me in conjunction with the Yes lubricants. Where do you get the vitamin E suppositories from??

The Vitamin E pessaries are made by Carlton and called Key E.  But actually they aren't that different from using a chunk of organic coconut oil (they have coconut and palm oil in them) which is much cheaper:-)

Ive got it on my list to try both..i hope they work alot safer and less complicated then hrt.

Lee, did you ever try the hyalaronic acid pessaries?  I can't remember if you can even get them there?  They are the best alternative to hormones, from the studies done, but obviously without the danger of hormones.

Hi Sallybongo that encouraging.  It is certainly working for me 90% of the time and appears to be working better the longer i use it. I was in agony beforehand and worry that I might not be able to keep taking them as there was nothing else that worked.

The vit e suppositories Key E I get off the internet - they are so much cheaper in the USA than Britain but you then have to pay duty.  I find them very good and use one most nights then coconut oil in the day if needed.

      This chatroom is really helpful

This is the brand name: Balance Activ Menopause Moisture Pessaries Plus - you can buy them from lots of places in the UK.  Ah, just looked and the UK amazon has the gel ones but not the pessaries, so they're gradually beginning to filter through as there is more demand, I think.

Hi, I was hoping too when I saw a specialist but he said my VA will never be cured only be managed. That being the case I would probably need continuous treatment where others without the condition would be able to stop. Vagifem are a very low dose anyway, I think it's more of a maintenance dose. Unfortunately from what I've read there is no cure and if treatment is stops the symptoms return.

It's disheartening and disappointing to think this is all they can offer. Lots of therapeutic treatments help but none I've heard match hrt but I guess it depends on the individual.

I'd be interested to hear myself from someone who knows different.

Tracy, I'm a little confused by what your doctor is saying. Your AV would not be cured but other women would be cured who don't have AV? Why would the others be taking hormones to begin with?

As I understand it AV progresses more with some than others. I assume it's a matter of how much estrogen your body is producing on it's own. There are some supplements and dietary suggestions that mimic estrogen in the body. Women who drink coffee supposedly have more estrogen (whatever that means). But I don't think there's a way to get the body to produce more of it, so it's a matter of doing whatever it takes (mainly lotions and potions) to be pain & discomfort free. Personally I'm banking on the Mona Lisa treatment if the AV gets too bad and will try to keep enough in savings to be able to have the treatment.

The studies on hyalaronic acid show there is improvement in the tissues and you can safely stay on that for life.  You can adjust the amount of use from anything between once or twice a week to daily, as well.  The one that I mentioned before is available on amazon both uk and .com in the gel form.

Sorry if it sounds a bit confusing I mentioned elsewhere that I have no ovaries due to a total hysterectomy whereas others with ovaries might be almost cured depending on the severity.

In the past before the op I had mild AV and used Vagifem successfully enough to come off them. But as you say if you don't stabilise then no doubt you would have to have further treatment.

The Mona Lisa treatment sounds great it would be good to hear first hand the outcome. I hope it works for you hopefully the price will reduce if more women had it done. Unfortunately due to my keloid ( over healing) the scaring may cause other problems.

Lee, if you google it for your area you may find a doctor who does it. Supposedly insurance does not cover it, but as insurance certainly covers Viagra, etc that is clearly descrimination and I would not be quiet until my insurance co conceded. Squeaky wheel! The prices I have seen were $1500-$1800 for the three treatments.

Lee, I just put my zip code into a site and came back with six doctors within a 100 miles radius. I expected to find them in Boston (for obvious reasons), but none came up which is a surprise. Why not ask your doctor to refer you to someone? Let them do the research. Complain if you don't get results. The older I get the more demanding I am of people whose job it is to help you no matter the field!
