Is it normal to need 2nd hip replaced after 1st one has been done

Posted , 23 users are following.

I have made a great recovery since my thr at the end of November 2015

everything went well with the op.and my recovery.

my problem now is that I had to go to gp with pain in my groin of my other

hip she has referred me back to my orthapedic surgeon as she says there

was wear on the other hip when xray was done previously but I never felt any

pain in that hip before and I was just wondering if this is normal to need the

other hip replaced once one has been done as a lot of people on here seem

to have had the other one done as well after a time.

I am a little upset as I am walking and doing things normal now and going back

to sticks and pain is not a nice thought but I could not go back to the awful

pain I suffered with my right hip and if the left has to be done well I will just have

to get it done but the thought of going through this so soon is really off putting

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for all the support on this site and looks like I am going to need advice

and support again.I am still very pleased that I had the operation as it is a great

way to get our life's back even if I need it again I will hopefully recover the same

Thanks again

From what I understand this is normal. I'm getting my second THR done as soon as I recover from my first.

I see the consultant in may and we have a policy here that you

must be operated on within 12 weeks of your consultation so I

will have the surgery within the next 4 months it's just I never

thought it would need done so quickly or cause me pain again

I feel I have got over the first thr so well and will the next one go

      as easy?

When I had my x-ray done and was talking to the consultant, he showed me it, I asked how long my right one would last, he said 3 or 4 yr, so I will see.  I have only had a couple of times with pain in it, none since the op.

So yes it seems like it can be normal.

When I saw the consultant at my 6 week check he never

mentioned my other hip although I did know there was oa

present but I thought if there is no pain it must be OK for

a few years but here I am just over 4 months and the pain

      has got worse every day.

I suppose when we are older it's probably best to get operated

on earlier well that's what I am trying to convince myself of

but oh the thought of it all over again but hey after a few nice

glasses of wine things did not look so bad

My other one is a funny shape with the bone spurs too lol, but no pain yet, but if it got painful, I don't think I would wait as long to get it done. I only found out in Nov it was OA, though I had the limping, pains etc for longer.

My physio, before the op, said if your in pain and mobility is bad, why wait, why go through all that when you can be sorted out and have a better quality of life, when you are young enough to enjoy it.

So just go for it, and enjoy every minute, that your not in pain.biggrin

Hi Lynn that's how I feel why wait but still just the thought of it again

mind you I was walking with 2 sticks and in excruciating pain with no

sleep pain killers done very little and I am not prepared to go through

that again as I waited too long with the other hip .

I was enjoying quality of life for a few weeks till this started on the left

hip so I want that back for keeps .I will get through this at least I know

what to expect as the operation and recovery were better than I had

      expected so fingers crossed ☺

You will be fine, surprising how quick it passes over. Also you know what's coming, so you can be prepared.biggrin

When I saw the surgeon end of last year, the x-rays showed severe OA of both hips but it was the the right hip that was giving me a lot of pain.  I had the right hip replaced nearly 8 weeks ago and I am finding that it is the un-operated hip that is giving me the most pain now.  I too am hoping that I will be able to delay replacing the left hip, as I don't want to go through it all again.  I am hoping that once the operated hip has strengthened up and can start taking some of the pressure off of the unoperated hip, the pain might ease.

I was like you Wendy and thought it would get better through

time with exercise and walking but the gp said no as oa has

no cure it just get worse and because the first operation was

a great success she said better to get it done sooner rather

than later easier said than done but what's to be will be at least

we are lucky in that something can be done successfully as this

operation proves ..Hope you get longer than me and it is a few

years till you need your 2nd one replaced good luck

I too just had surgery 5 days ago on one hip, and will be getting the other done as soon as I am well, about 3 months or so. I'd rather have it that way and be able to go on with my life sooner than later.

I know you are right in that it's better to get it done sooner rather

than later but I was so happy with my life back to normal doing

normal things again and not thinking about painkillers and sticks

for support again it has just got so painfull so quickly. I am still in

shock i suppose as I have been looking forward and now I am

going backwards again but that's oa I suppose as I am lucky in

one respect that it can be fixed.

Good luck on with your recovery

I knew when I had the first hip replacement in November that the other would need doing. Following the replacement things were gradually improving for about 6 weeks, now at 18 weeks I am almost as bad as I was before the first operation so I am looking forward to the second one in 6 weeks time.

The only difference is that now all the pain is concentrated on one side instead of spread across both sides.

If it is going to need doing in your case, the longer you leave it the worse it is going to get.

      Good luck to you

I had my rthr September 2015 & also had pain in left hip & surgeon said it would need replacing within 12 months. I had amazing relief of pain after rthr until I stopped using crutches. Then my right hip pain got so severe that I couldn't walk, sleep or sit without pain so at 6 week check surgeon booked me in for lthr at end of January 2016. I'm now 10 weeks post op & am thrilled how pain free I am in Both hips. After 5 years of horrific pain I can truthfully say that it was the best decision I ever made & am delighted surgeon didn't leave me 12 months. To be fully recovered with both hips within 6 months has given me my life back. Everyone tells me I look 10 years younger as the pain showed in my face. So if ur offered 2nd op soon I say go for it x

Thanks for this post it's just like what's happened to me and it's

nice to hear both went well that's a bit of a worry for me as my first

thr went great so fingers crossed it will go as well as I will be getting

it done within the next 3 months as is the policy here they must operate

within 12 weeks I could not stand this pain to get as bad as the last

hip pain thanks again and take care
