Is it normal to need 2nd hip replaced after 1st one has been done

Posted , 23 users are following.

I have made a great recovery since my thr at the end of November 2015

everything went well with the op.and my recovery.

my problem now is that I had to go to gp with pain in my groin of my other

hip she has referred me back to my orthapedic surgeon as she says there

was wear on the other hip when xray was done previously but I never felt any

pain in that hip before and I was just wondering if this is normal to need the

other hip replaced once one has been done as a lot of people on here seem

to have had the other one done as well after a time.

I am a little upset as I am walking and doing things normal now and going back

to sticks and pain is not a nice thought but I could not go back to the awful

pain I suffered with my right hip and if the left has to be done well I will just have

to get it done but the thought of going through this so soon is really off putting

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for all the support on this site and looks like I am going to need advice

and support again.I am still very pleased that I had the operation as it is a great

way to get our life's back even if I need it again I will hopefully recover the same

Thanks again

I am in the same position that you are in, although my surgery had to be cancelled due to RBBB that needs further investigation.  My last xray in November 2015 showed that I had "mild" arthritis in my left hip.  That came as something of a shock, as I have no symptoms.  I have continued with the physio exercises that I was given for the bad hip, the right one, but am now doing the same exercises with the left hip, in the hope that it will prolong its useful life.

I have read several posts on the forum where this probelm has arisen after surgery on one hip.  I think one of the problems is that the "good" hip has had to do extra work because of the bad hip, and this may be the reason why it shows wear and tear after surgery.

Hi Susie I think that could be right about the good hip doing the

work of the bad hip before the thr but does it mean now the bad

hip which is now the good hip may suffer if I don't get the second

hip done quickly does this make sense to you ?

The second hip is now causing me a lot of pain but I may add I am

not TOO worried about the 2nd thr needing done it's just that I

was enjoying the weeks I had totaly pain free, meds free and sticks

free 😢No one I am sure is looking forward to the thr but I can

honestly say it's the best thing I ever done and I was petrified before

I had it done but no regrets at all and hopefully the 2nd will go as well.

Take care and hope you get the all clear soon and get they hips of

      yours sorted out. thanks again

    Dear Helen,

Apparently so ... I totally freaked out when I was told that other hip's cartilage was down to bone-on-bone within 6 months after 1st x-ray was taken - right hip was in desperate need of hip replacement while left one was fine, maybe mild OA showing -n this was October 2014

Had THR surgery March 2015 (was in denial and had not found this forum yet) - All went well, but then got pain in groin again - that is when I found this forum ...

Follow up visit was May and x-ray showed how bad left hip had become - I was devastating and tought I was a freak  ... came to this forum and low and behold, so many friends were also waiting for their 2nd THR -

The months leading up to 2nd L THR (September 2015) were horrible - pain got worse and were definitely holding back healing of right hip ..

Of course, the thought of going through all of it again is off putting (mildly expressed)- but I knew what to expect and to be honest, it became less of an issue as time went on - It is not the surgery per se, but the post-op time - the whole blah thing again-

However, I (thought) was much more prepared, smarter and thus less afraid - I knew what to expect, how I was able to move - I bought a lot of stuff beforehand (Like sooooo many rolls of toiletpaper cheesygrin...) - I live alone and a bit isolated -

AFter surgery of 2nd hip I felt great ... 2 brand new hips !!!! no OA pain - I felt confident and trusted my new hardware so much more - I thought that FINALLY healing had begun -

I probably overdid it from the beginning (euphoric state)- cocky and over-confident, so a bit disappointed right now that I have trocanteric bursitis - back to more rest and taking it easier -

You will be fine !!! seriously -

    big warm hug

Hi Renee thanks for your comments it's exactly what has happened

to me I am very dissapointed in how quick this has happened but

I will get over it and look forward again and face this head on but

oh I wish I had more time before it was needed.

Last night I had a dreadfull sleep well don't know if I could call it

sleep as I was still looking at the clock at 6 am as the pain was bad

so that was a little taste of what's to come if I don't get it done so

god works in mysterious way's he showed me what the future will

hold so onwards and upwards as they say as I have now accepted

that I have no option but to get the 2nd one done ASAP.

I do hope your setback gets sorted quickly for you and just enjoy

the rest as I think we are all guilty of doing too much when we feel

good .take care and thanks again for your post

I know .... I was angry and so resentful towards my body - how dare she ??

When I asked the surgeon WHY ???

he gave me this useless answer: Because they are the same age !!!!

Typical answer if you cannot think of anything to say blame age ha ha

    Hi Helen,

At the beginning of this journey, when I had my first Xray done of both hips, I was told that my right hip showed wear and tear, but that my left hip looked okay.  I haven't had my left hip Xrayed since then.  It feels okay at the moment.  I'm hoping it won't need doing.

Hi Cels I got both hips xrayed after the surgery and it did show OA

on my other hip but I had no pain there and I just thought with the

exercises etc it would be fine for a while anyway but when the pain

got bad I knew what it was as once you have had this pain you know

what its like and really there is no cure but to get rid and replace .

I hope you continue to have no effects in your other hip it could take

years I am just one of the unlucky ones but just think in a few months

I will have both new hips and will be sprightly again lol

pity the face cannot be so easily made new 😢

Take care and thanks for your post

    Hry Helen

I did not have a clue l had bad hips l suffered what l thought was a pulled muscle or a tendon l went to go a number of times and they agreed and sent me away with painkillers and a card to phone nhs physio. Which l did call but it had a waiting list of months. The pain started in jan 2015 and by september l was in agony still just in left leg. I could hardly walk getting in and out my car brought tears to my eyes. The final strawcwas when husband saw me crying trying to get dressed. At this time l was still working full time but l was miserable l hardly spoke l spent all day wishing it was time. All my work team noticed l was quiet and withdrawen and was struggling with my workload. I made another appointment with doctor by this time it was late september. I begged thec doctor to do something more do he sent me for an xray thst day.

Well a week later l was called back to be told l needed 2 new hips. Yes 2 i was shocked burst out crying.....why 2 l only had pain in my left leg. He said its the worst looking hips l have seen they were both bone to bone all 7 he said l am suprised you are still walking it must be so painful. No sh*t it has took over my life for nearly a year.

Again l asked why 2 at the same tme when l only have pain in 1 leg. He said it was very common for both to go at same time.

Luckily l have bupa through my work and had an appointment arranged for a week or 2 later to see the surgeon . Again he took xrays and tests and said my they are angry hips they are done they need replaced asap. I had all these things going through my head like why me l am to young to need new hips at 42. I now realise thats not the case there are people much younger than me l learned this from this forum .

Had 1st hip replacement on december 9th and 2nd on 15th feb so l am 7 weeks post 2nd op.

Its the best thing l have ever done l have no more OA pain just in recovery and l feel a million times better. So to get 2 new hips around the same time is very common l have spoke to a lot of people on the forum who have had both done there is no answer as to why l needed them as l am just a normal person who liked to go walks and l am not to young either as there is a lot of younger people on this forum.

Hope my story helps you l got the all clear from hospital on wednesday so l am just spending the next month or 2 off my work getting used to living normal life with my new hips and l feel great. Obviously l am still recovering and still have some pain and get tired easy but everyday l get better.

What l will say Helen as the 2 ops were diffrent l had diffrent pains it took me slightly longer to recover but the doctor told me this would happen..

So good luck to you don't suffer with the other one if you have the chance to get it replaced take it before pain gets to bad.

Thanks for that laura puts my mind at rest to know it's not just me

but you are so young at 42 you poor thing I have put mine down to

hard work and always on my feet over the years and age as I am

65 years young and in a few months after my 2nd thr I will be a 65

year old with nice new hips lol

I will take on board your advice regarding a longer recovery with the

second hip makes sense my surgeon is wonderful he is not a chatty

person or a great bedside manner type of guy but he does great work

and i have no complaints and his registrar is wonderfull with a great

bedside manner and a great sense of humour so I am confidant going

      into this next operation.

      Thanks again for your post

Thanks for your good wishes but my heart goes out to your son

he is so young he has his whole life ahead of him my son is 30

and I would hate to think he was going through what your son is

I have lived the best part of my life but still have a lot of harm to

do yet !!!but to go through this so young is unthinkable please tell

your son to keep his chin up and be glad that things can be done

for him I wish him good luck and lots of happiness as his health

improves take care and thanks again for your post

Mahalo for thinking of him. I, too "still have a lot of harm to do yet". For now, I am concentrating on son & trying - gently - to motivate him. I'm a pretty blunt person so it's hard not to say exactly what I think. Yes, he is recovered for the most part, but has occasional days of pain, discomfort or just worry. He was planning to go to a meeting but didn't. I thought it would be good for him to be with his peers. Oh, well. Best to you, Helen with your recovery and next challenge.
