Is it normal to need 2nd hip replaced after 1st one has been done
Posted , 23 users are following.
I have made a great recovery since my thr at the end of November 2015
everything went well with the op.and my recovery.
my problem now is that I had to go to gp with pain in my groin of my other
hip she has referred me back to my orthapedic surgeon as she says there
was wear on the other hip when xray was done previously but I never felt any
pain in that hip before and I was just wondering if this is normal to need the
other hip replaced once one has been done as a lot of people on here seem
to have had the other one done as well after a time.
I am a little upset as I am walking and doing things normal now and going back
to sticks and pain is not a nice thought but I could not go back to the awful
pain I suffered with my right hip and if the left has to be done well I will just have
to get it done but the thought of going through this so soon is really off putting
Has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks for all the support on this site and looks like I am going to need advice
and support again.I am still very pleased that I had the operation as it is a great
way to get our life's back even if I need it again I will hopefully recover the same
Thanks again

My right hip was replaced 4 months ago, and all has been well, but the left hip is causing no end of problems. I have been quietly hoping it will settle as my right hip becomes stronger and I am bearing weight evenly. However just lately on three different occasions my left hip has collapsed nearly causing me to fall down the stairs...just the same as the right.
I had moderate wear and tear last time it was checked...need to get it xrayed, but I was hoping to string it out until after the summer..just want to enjoy life and sunshine for a while before hitting the hospital again...do you feel the same?
My little daughter had her birthday party yesterday, we woke up at 4am and were still celebrating at 8.30pm I was limping badly, new hip perfect - left hip was a disaster and I had their familiar deep bone pain. Must admit my heart sank - it really did - so I know just how you feel.
I am not afraid like last time though, at least this time we know what to expect, we know how to care for our new hips and can plan well. I am not overjoyed at the prospect though...

I got xray day after thr and I knew it showed wear and
would need done in the future never thinking the future
would come so soon . I have an appointment in a few weeks
with the surgeon who done my op but every day and NIGHT
the pain is gettin worse.I could not go through the bone on
bone pain again as I was in agony so I have now accepted
that sooner will be better so it will be done within 12 weeks
I wish it could have been different but hey what can we do
as I have said it can at least be sorted.
I am now getting into the good eating and as much exercise
as is comfortable to get the body as ready as I can for another
trauma What a thought .The only good thing is we know what
to expect and hip one went great so fingers crossed .
Take care and I will keep all you good people informed as things
progress

Still I do feel for you, it is a lot to go through once, much less twice, but we did it the first time so we can definitey do it again.
At least this way they will both be done and fixed, and you can truly get on and enjoy your life without the second one hanging over you. Whilst it is fresh in your mind and you have all the right 'equipment' and are in the frame of mind to be ready so to speak. I can't think waiting makes it any easier to be honest.
Mine is more of a logisitical decision, as I need to wait until my husband can take a good amount of time off.....and also I need a bit of a break....I have two children and a house full to the brim with animals, so it all needs a bit of planning and organisation to say the least. I had a few issues with the previous hospital as well, so I need to think through how to deal with that (stll like the surgeon though)
Wishing you the very best for your up and coming appointment, and to be honest the operation was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, and we know how to do it all this time, it is a small comfort but worth it to be truly pain free I feel.
Wishing the best do post how you are getting on x

with two youngsters I at least got this problem a lot later in my life
than you and we are retired so hubby is there at my beck and call lol
He does try his best but men just don't do it like the girls ha ha
my daughter is very good she comes and does things like she knows I
want them done and my wee grandaughters keep everything cheery
I also am not afraid of the op I was first time round but really it is a
straightforward op FOR THE SURGEONS!!! that is but on average most
ops go well and if you try to do as you are told recovery is also very
straightforward
I wish you all the best and I will let you know how things go x

I know how you feel and many of us here do as well - My 2nd one came as a big surprise when x-ray showed the rapid decline of the cartilage in left hip within 6 months -
It is never a good time, of course - but I did summer of 2015 with recovering from RTHR (March) and increasing pain in left hip - It is almost unavoidable how the pain will overtake - beautiful weather and you want to be out and about but can't - better then to have the 2nd surgery and recover and heal - Maybe healing in Summer time is easier??? and for me, I felt so much more confident with 2 new hips -
If at all possible darlings, take the first opportunity to have it done -
and I am not saying this lightly ---

Hi Lindsey
How are you? How is your other hip? Is it causing you problems too?
No I haven't had my left hip replaced yet! I have been lucky to keep going - I don't how much longer I have to be honest. I go to the gym every day to try and keep up my fitness, I really think it helps the recovery and so excited to be back there, but it plays up so badly and hurts like hell literally agony some days and I am doing everything to cushion it, bike etc. I am having many a sleepless night.
I know the biting point is when I can no longer manage to get in and out of the car and standing...the minute that happens I am booking in!
Having said that the pain can be awful sometimes, and really takes me back to the first one...now I know why we went through with the operation in the first place!!!!!
Hope you are okay hun?

It's been a year ago yesterday that I had a total hip replacement on my right hip. I've always been super active & hike heavily, as well as having been a dancer, bodybuilder, yoga participant & aerobics instructer back in the day. When I first went for major pain, in April of 2015, I seriously thought I had a groin pull....nope, right hip was bone on bone with no recourse but the surgery. I was told however that since I'm more active than a normal 64yr old (at that time), I needed to wait as long as I could before scheduling the surgery....lasted until Jan, 2015 when I was at a point that I couldn't sleep from the pain & was having issues walking. Surgery was hugely successful. I was back on the trails within 2 months & back at work in two weeks...I've had no issues with the new hip except not being able to do a very few yoga hip twisting positions....when my hips were initially xrayed, my left hip was beginning to show signs of wear, about 30% loss of cartilage & I was told that sooner or later I'd need it done as well....so ok, it's now been a year & I'm starting to begin to feel that old 'ache' in the left joint & am getting a clicking sound when I move into certain positions....I know what's coming. I just didn't think it would be this quick....it's good to know that this isn't uncommon & I have to say this.....with the excellent results from the first, I know what to expect now & won't hesitate to schedule a surgery much sooner.....geez!

I had my right hip done in September 2016, the last 6 weeks my left hip had been giveing me gip , the same pain but worse than before . I'm gutted just getting back to normal due to return to work Monday and struggling to walk today. But at least I know what to expect and have all the aids to assist me.

My problem is slightly different from most here. I am due to have my first hip replacement in 2 weeks (I was only informed a few days ago). X rays in January showed advanced rapid onset osteoarthritis in both hips, with some AVN in the left hip. The surgeon told me that I could choose whichever hip was giving me the most pain. This was 3 months ago. I get most of my pain in my knees (referred pain) and they both feel equally bad. I chose the right hip, as he also said that if I slept on my side it would have to be on the operated hip while in recovery. I am only used to sleeping on my right side, so I chose that one for that reason only.
However - and this is where the quandary arises - I am in the UK and at the mercy of the NHS, which is in crisis. I have already waited longer than I should have had to, as I was listed as urgent, and have been getting by with a rollator and painkillers for months. I wish they would do both hips at the same time, but they don't seem willing. I think they think it would be too incapacitating, especially since I am somewhat overweight (although have lost some weight) and 72. I am seriously wondering which hip I should have done first, because I fear they will not do the second one soon, because of waiting lists and lack of beds. The AVN in the left hip worries me.
I am going to try to talk to the surgeon in the meantime. I would like a second x ray before the operation, or even better an MRI, but in this system, that is probably not very likely to happen. If I had a choice, I would opt to have the second operation as soon as possible, as I won't have a "good leg" to aid my recovery from the first one, and I feel I will not really see the benefits until both are done. What do you think would be a reasonable minimum time to wait between operations?

is normal. I have bilateral AVN. So, I need both done. Just had the right one done. When the left one becomes painful to the point to where it interferes in my life, I will have other one done.
Most with AVN (Avascular Necrosis) usually has it in both hips. If it attacks one it is more likely than not going to effect the other one. But not always. I was steroid dependent 30 years ago and they tore my musculoskeletal system up big time. My knees may need it as well. Good luck.
