It all began with Globus now feels like catarrh?

Posted , 8 users are following.

I was diagnosed with Globus in January.  I still have it, kind of sad  However, it feels like I have catarrh stuck in my throat all the time rather than a lump?  Does anyone else get this?

I have had camera up nose, ultrasound and no lump found but nodules on thyroid which I am waiting for consultant to follow up.

Sometimes I feel very sick and unsure whether that is related or not as I also have Diverticula disease so could be related to that.

Every day I try to be positive and do the Secret self healing, but boy it is getting harder and harder to stay positive. sad

    Hi Chele,

I had never heard the term catarrh before, but I looked it up and and believe it may be what I’m experiencing. I’ve had globus since Oct. 2016. At this point it has stopped upsetting me so much and I just live with it. Some days are better than others.

But mostly I feel as though there is a ball of phlegm that I keep trying to swallow. Not sure if it is actually there or not.

I have given up on doctors, and taking tests for this. No one knew how to help, and it is depressing to continue having appointments that are expensive and let me down.

I also have a click in my throat that was never there before. Do you also experience this?

Sorry you are going through this. I truly hope you feel better.

Oh gosh since 2016!  So sorry it has been such a long time.

Yes phlegm is just what I feel - can't swallow it and can't cough it up either!  Not sure about the click?  I don't think I have that?  I do have a horrible taste in my mouth a lot of the time though?

In this day and age you'd think someone would come up with something to cure this horrible thing!

I tried everything, I had a random off and on ache on one side of my throat for I think four months, every single day and on those days I would research how to get rid of it and come up with new remedies based on symptoms I was having, my gosh it took forever it was draining, then slowly and slowly it would stop happening which then I took my mind off it and lately I rarely feel it if I do it's for a couple seconds then it's gone

Gosh, yes I do believe you need to forget about it as it becomes totally draining and takes over your life.  Sometimes I forget how to laugh and yet I was always told I was always happy.  I must try harder to forget.  Thank you for responding here, much appreciate it.

Do you remember where you were when you first starting having those systems? If you're healthy.. I have narrowed it down to a few things.. food allergies (I took out dairy and gluten and feel great) Barely any acidics, low sugars, no chocolate, etc

Have digestive issues with nuts and seeds because of diverticula disease.  Had been having a lot of stress with mum and had two diverticula flare ups.  Directly after that got this lump in throat!  Have to go on liquid diet when get a flare up so it could well have been something I was taking in on that liquid diet I suppose.  I'll look back and try and think what I was eating/drinking.  Thank you.

Hi, how are you feeling now? I have the same thing...been going on for weeks.(you can check my recent post) feels like a catarrh stuck in between then back of my nose and throat. And I t moves sometimes. I feel it’s dripped down from my nose but I have extremely dry nose recently.

Hey deon, were you able to find some type of relief? I’m experiencing the exact same thing! No doctor can tell me what is going on! They keep giving me pills that I’m scared to take because of the globus I’ve asked for the liquid versions instead.. also I’ve been In an out of er rooms because of this only to get sent home with no relief.. I know this thread is kind of old but if you can reply or anyone for that matter I’d greatly appreciate it.. hope all is well..

Hi, I started to have the same symptoms as you described in your original post, lump in my throat and the feeling of having mucus or phlegm constantly. I went to several doctors starting in April of this year to get some answers but till this day I have no diagnosis. One doctor said I had an enlarged thyroid and sent me for some blood work and ultrasound of the thyroid and soft tissue including my lymph nodes, which all came back negative. Then I was sent to see a gastroenterologist who performed an endoscopy with a bravo study to see if I had acid reflux or GERD, following with a breath test to see if there is any bacteria, and all that came back negative. Now my last resort is to go see an ENT doctor and an Allergist to determine why is this constant feeling there.

I did realize that when I cut down on my caffein, chocolate and acidic foods I feel a tiny bit better, yet that feeling is constantly there. Also I noticed when I took Claritin D, that helped a bit, and few hours later I was feeling the lump in my throat again. My doctor also said that this could be just from high stress, anxiety and depression, and I believe him, but I need some kind of a treatment to get rid of this because its driving me insane. Hopefully you are feeling better, and please keep me updated with any of the follow ups or treatment suggestions from your doctor.

I have now been for ultrasound of thyroid - actually 2 - and although I have nodules they are not problematic apparently and quite normal.  The phlegm, my consultant, said is where I keep swallowing and that aggrevates the throat causing phlegm.  He said to keep hydrated and try not to swallow unnecessarily.  It is getting a lot better to be honest.  Not gone completely.  I have been drinking lots of water but also I have not been obsessing about it.  I am taking 20mg of esomeprazol which has been helping acid reflux but I am going to ask the doc if I can lower the dose to try and wean myself off it.

This is the most aggravating thing to have and noone seems to have a solution.  My Dr said it was caused by stress and anxiety so I am doing everything I can not to get stressed.  I really hope you feel better soon ..... but believe me when I say it becomes easier if you try not to think about it.  I know how difficult that is but it definitely works.

Hi roxy. I too went thru this same exact thing. ENT appointments, I’m already on anxiety meds, and tried the whole acid reflux meds!!! Soo annoying and it just caused way more anxiety. I came across an article on magnesium deficiency. Read it. First sign..... lump in throat.. aka globus. Getting blood work may show. I started taking magnesium supplements fir days now and it seemed to help me. Consult your doctor of course but it may help you too!

Hi Jessica, Thank you so much for the information, and I will be buying magnesium today smile I doubt there's any harm in that, of course not overdoing it. Did you ever feel like your throat was also swollen? Because I feel it and even see the inflammation in my throat when I start observing it with my fingers. But my blood work and ultrasound tests did not show any deficiency with my thyroid or lymph nodes. Its so weird and its driving me crazy. Like some days the inflammation is a lot and some days my neck and throat feels normal yet the lump or the tightness is always there.

Hi roxy, yes I was diagnosed with LPR.you can google that. And all that is is an inflammation of the larynx from acid. But like I said that’s a different feeling from a goober like feeling that you can’t swallow/spit up. That felt like someone grabbing my throat plus hoarse voice. Tylenol(aunt inflammatory) I took for that. That feeling goes away after a week or so. Globus was completely different. (For me)

Hi Chele, I also have the constant swallowing problem since the mucus/phlegm stuck in my back nose/back throat, although it can never be swallowed down. Drinking water doesn’t help at all(sometimes even feels worse)

I was guessing maybe this makes your throat muscle tighter so you are more sensitive about the mucus feeling? I don’t know.

Do you feel less mucus/phlegm after forcing yourself not to keep swallowing your saliva?

      Hi roxy..

Was wondering how everything went by taking the magnesium. I’m continually taking them 1 x a day. So far so good.

So sorry it has been a long wait for a response. Been hectic with grandchildren.  Sadly, phlegm still as aggravating as hell.  However, when I am kept busy it is easier to forget it!  Night time is the worst.

      how are you?

Where dos here do you get the magnesium from?  Is it still working?

      Hi Jessica,

I wanted to give it some time and keep taking magnesium, but it has done nothing to me, and I still have the throat tightness and phlegm feeling in my throat. I have my appointments coming up with an Allergist and an ENT doctor in September and hopefully I will get some answers then.

Thank you for following up, and how are you doing?

Magnesium is an over the counter supplement. If you drink alcohol or take axiiety meds or even just sweat a lot then your body may be deficient of it. I take it every day. It can’t hurt you if you try it.

I’m doing very well. The ENT dr said I have LPR aka silent reflux. It’s when acid reaches the throat with out heart burn. Inflames rd lyarnex. Let me know what your dr says when u see him.

Well, I still have the phlegm/catarrh in my throat and it is still getting me down.  I have made another appt to see my doctor next week to see if there are any further tests I can have.

Do any of you have or have suffered with gastritis?  I have been reading up on that lately in desperation to be honest!  Wondering if it could be that which is causing the catarrh in throat?

Hey Jessica I was also told I couldn’t see a specialist “ENT” until September! I cried an they getting me in in 6 days Lol my doctor was like “obviously something is bothering you I’ll fill out a request form now” I didn’t mean to cry I’m just so fed up with this feeling it’s so thought consuming an it’s driving me insane! My doctor also said there are cases where “things live in your tissue” that could explain the moving feeling.. I’m so afraid of knowing also afraid of not knowing.. please keep us updated hoping you feel better soon! I know what your going through..

Hey chele, I’ve literally grabbed a piece of paper an pen an from this thread alone written down all possibilities to talk with my doctor about to lessen my doctor visits I’ve literally been to five different doctors! All saying “ct scans” are normal “X-ray” normal they’ve even used iodine/betadine (unsure) *CONTRAST to see things more clearer an still nothing.. all blood work has come back normal it’s just so frustrating.. hoping you find some type of relief I’m not sure if I suffer from gastritis or not just yet as I’m still waiting to be seen with the ent doctors in a few days.. 6 to be exact .. good luck to you an everyone else..

Hope you get on OK with Dr.  Let us know what he says.  I too have a dr appt on Tuesday so will let you know how I get on.

It’s just a real bummer that I have to “be careful” of what I eat as I previously ate like a homeless teenage college student Lol 😂 chips soda candy popcorn sometimes no “real” foods at all through the entire day only junk so this is a real lifestyle change for me but will be totally worth it if I could start to feel “normal” again.. did you have endoscopy done? What was the process did it hurt at all?

    • Posted

I haven't had an endoscopy.  I had a camera up the nose, which actually was fine.

Stay positive.  Let me know how you get on. x
