It burns when I walk

It has been 6 weeks. June 23 I broke my fibula, dislocatedthe tibia and severed the ligaments playing roller derby in a tournament. I have been  feeling pretty good with barely any pain meds. I don’t wear my air cast much as my dr. told me to keep it off as much as possible and to flex my foot back and forth, which I do. I went to the beach today and after much struggling and laughter, managed to get me and my rubber dingy in the water. Once out far enough. I got in and walked with the dingy, which felt amazing and no pain at all. Later this evening I tried walking with my crutches because I have read everywhere that the bone is healed at 6weeks and people can start walking with about 25% of their body weight, but holy! My ankle is sore now (burning, aching and throbbing) and i have burning feeling right up my leg to my inner thigh. Is this right? Is this supposed to happen? My 6-7 week appointment is 4 days from now. I think I might have jumped the gun with my excitement. I don’t remember it feeling like this the last time I broke my other ankle. Has anyone had similar experience when they first started walking again?

That is too funny. We broke our ankles the same day, almost the same way, doing almost the same thing and we both bought a new car, that we haven’t been able to drive,  the same day, lol

Lol That is exactly what I did when my doctor told me I could walk even in the boot I overdid it and ended up hurting and crying after two or three days.   I think it’s common that after weeks and weeks of doing nothing once we are told we can walk we all go a little crazy. The good thing is over-the-counter pain meds and rest for a day or two and then you will be ok.  But you need to make a schedule: up two hours, down an hour,  up three hours, down an hour whatever works best.  Good luck and slow down! Lol

WFryer= bilateral ankle breaks June 12th with surgery on one side, closed reduction on other.

It’s so hard to still still! Lol I went back to work two days after surgery. So my healing process has been waaay different than than the last time i broke my other ankle. The splint came off at 3 weeks and I was back in my old aircast. He told me to keep it off as much as possible and when it is off to do my exercises. The problem is that because it’s off almost all the time, even at work. It feels like normal until I move it wrong or the meds wear off lol.  I hope on Thursday he gives me the green light. I am sooo over this . Lol That is a great idea for a walking schedule, i will definitely do that. Thanks again

I broke my talus and wore a cast for 12 weeks and now 4 days ago it was removed. Ifeel a lot of pain when I bear weight on it because my ankle have disuse osteoporosis. Did CT and talus not fully healed yet but doc said try to walk and take vitamin D drugs for 3 months. Does osteoporosis heal itself when you use your ankle and exercises it.

Ya, last time I broke my other ankle, the healing process was a lot longer.  I was in a wheelchair the first month. My surgeon said he didn’t even want me to touch it to the ground and I was in a cast/splint for 2 months and then a walking boot for another 2.5 months. I followed directions to a T and 4 yrs later it still swells and twinges. I don’t know much about Osteoporosis bur with two ankles broken with hardware still in it’s probably time to do some research. Best of luck, let me know what you come up with. Good luck with your recovery! smile

I feel pain through my foot. I think this pain is belongs to disuse osteoporosis. The pain is getting away day by day but really slow. My talus hasn't fully healed yet but my doctor said try to walk because osteoporosis will not improve if you don't use your ankle and foot. I am also taking  calcium D3.

So a few months ago, I was prescribed Pariet 20mg for my acid reflux. Apparently it can cause osteoporosis and I’m wondering if it made me soft and it’s why I broke my ankle? I’m gonna ask my surgeon cause if it’s true, I will suffer the acid reflux. It’s better than broken bones.

I have suffered this since 2008. I'm now 67 years old. The pain has got gradually worse as time goes on. By 4-5pm I can barely stand the pain any longer. I'm in bed by 7pm. I also can't wear any footwear by this time as the swelling has increased so much.I'm told I have severe nerve damage and traumatic arthritis. I have no life now as a result of this and told that fusing the joint would have little benefit. I sincerely hope that you have a much better recovery.

I am so sorry to hear that. I broke my left ankle in the same way 4 years ago and even though they are the exact same breaks, the healing process is completely different. Also, 4 years later and it still swells dramatically too. I don’t think the swelling will ever go away. I think once I get the ok I’m gonna push myself a little extra and fingers crossed on a successful recovery. I wish for you a solution to alleviate your ankle pain.

I’m getting ready to have my ankle fused . I hope it helps. I’m nervous.

Ohh man. As much as it sucks being hurt and having to get surgery, I would hate to have to know about it before hand. I would be so nervous too. Just remember, a lot of the stuff that we read on the internet about fusing and everything else is from past experiences. They have improved surgical procedures tremendously and I believe the outcome will be successful for you. Just be sure to follow all instructions and ask your doctor any questions you might have. Keep a piece of paper with you and whenever you think of something you might want to know write it down so you don’t forget. Best of luck to you.  Visualize it being a success!!
