Jelly like transparent mucus

Posted , 39 users are following.

I need your help on a problem that I haven't checked with the doctor yet hoping that it's not serious. For last a few years I have a jelly like transparent, sticky mucus in my chest. I never felt any pain thereby, nor does it make me cough, but I do cough or spit that mucus out advertently. That substance keeps on developing in my lungs, or some air passage. In cold, I rarely feel minute weezing, or congestion, but I can walk 10 miles. Can some one please help me understand what that is, is it normal?, or it signifies some severe problem. For redressal, I take a lot of water, I take coffee and garlic tea as well, eat a lot of spices as well so that the mucus stays soft and easily ejectable. I also feel that I usually have a running nose, it seems to me another reason. Please tell me what it is so that I may assured that it's not something serious.

    Colour of mucus – clear.

Inhaler – I have been asthmatic since I was 19 – have had regular chest infections and a couple of bad asthma attacks that ended up with a stay in hospital for a few days. Symbicort is both a preventer and a reliever – I used to have two inhalers, one becotide to prevent and ventolin to relieve the wheezes.

Climate – I don’t see much of a connection – I live in west Wales which has a damp climate and doesn’t get as hot as you, maybe a little colder in the winter. Seldom dusty or dry. It could however be particulates/pollutants in the air – here I live in a VERY clean air area however there are tree and plant pollens at various times of the year. When I visit town [seldom] then where there is high ozone I get wheezy, not particularly mucusy.

Consultant – he was a nose and throat consultant and I only saw him the once as he said there was nothing he could do about it. Obviously I attend Asthma Clinic regularly.

If you google mucus and athma there is a lot of info on the web.

Wow - that's not what my GP told me - it is all I have, plus a pack of Prednisilone tablets for a heavy hit if I get bad. But it takes at least a day to kick in, then slow reducing dose.

I have been having the same issue since last year after a severe cold. I have asthma and have difficulty breathing every night; also, endless jelly type sputum. I use inhaler every night and took asthma prevention pills. However, none of these stop the symptoms completely until I took a allergy pill yesterday. I have never felt so good and no more sputum since.

Maybe it's asthma. Or bronchitis. In any case, you need to go to the doctor.

it's allergies that are causing post nasal drip. Allergic rhinitis is the actual diagnosis which causes the post nasal drip. it creates a very thick, sticky mucus. it comes up in small, clear, sticky balls.

Unfortunately, for myself, I've had no luck with any medications, otc, netti pot, nasal sprays, supplements, etc. The only thing that does help is benadryl (but causes drowsiness) & flonase. however, with Covid being around i am forgoing the flonase right now since it's a steroid that weakens immunity. good luck.

    Hi everyone,

The clear jelly like mucous you’re coughing out is likely due to allergic asthma. I know because it happens to me as well. I call them my asthma chunks lol (gross I know). Anyways think of these questions and if any apply to you:

    • Does it happen year round?
    • If yes, do you notice more of it during certain seasons/time of the year, or in particular environments or homes?
    • Does it usually accompany a bad cough or just a cough to get it out?

I ask these because I get it year round, but it’s very mild for most of the year. I have year round allergies, but my worst ones come in fall. My environmental allergies are dust mites and mold snd i think ragweed as well although it’s not as bad as the dust and mold. I also live in BC which brings cold damp winters, which is heaven for mold and yep dust mites. The mites flourish in humidity around and above 70 %, so if it’s humid in your home get a dehumidifier and keep the humidity below 50% as they cannot survive in this environment. Also get protective pillow covers and wash bedding weekly in hot water. I highly recommend going for an allergy test to determine if any allergies can be the culprit of your asthma and the jelly chunks.

Another factor to consider is cold air is an absolute trigger for asthma, another reason why it gets worse in winter. For most of the year my asthma doesn’t bother me. As soon as fall hits I’m gasping for air every day and night and close to calling 911 at times. As it moves into more winter months I start to get used to it and the symptoms subside, but will still occur just not as bad. Lately temperatures have been below 0 here which isn’t too common and I’ve noticed my laboured breathing and wheezing starting to return, and I’ve been coughing up a ton of clear pleghm.

So to those of you who are afraid about it, it’s probably just a symptom of your asthma and allergies. Please consider taking a full panel allergy test. Zyrtec (also known as reactine, cetrezine is the antihistamine in it. Reactine is expensive, i recommend going to Costco and getting the Kirkland brand, you get a lot for a cheap price. Just make sure you see cetrezine listed on the label.) Is an amazing and safe antihistamine to take, I take it with my inhalers as well. It’s honestly probably nothing more than that.

I hope this helps, ask me any questions if you’d like 😃

    Hello All ,

I have similar symptoms Im glad that i found this . I usually spit out these mucus balls in the morning feels like they have been accumulating in my throat over night almost feels like its being stored somewhere between my nose and throat . Sometimes I can get it out by sneezing and sometimes coughing out , this usually feels like its being stored on the left side of the throat . I also sometimes feel pressure around my upper abdomen around chest area and feel relieved when I put pressure there and I burp .

Anyone was able to find a cure for your problems here . Please reply my life has been miserable this past 3 years I would say .

I have issues with it sometimes because of chronic bronchitis. I found NAC helps to reduce my coughing and stops that phlegm from being an issue as much. (talk with your doctor before trying it) Nac is commonly prescribed to people with chronic bronchitis and COPD because it reduces the inflammation of the airways. It is also said to boost your immune system to some degree. It is available in Canada without a prescription but i'm not sure about other countries. NAC was not prescribed to me I just decided on my own to take it after reading a number of articles, I am not a medical professional and all medications have the potential for side effects. What medications you take you take at your own risk especially if you don't talk with a doctor first.
