    Hi Tracieann,

I have Barretts, hiatus hernia etc,was diagnosed 2 yrs ago,had my two year endoscopy last week,no results from that yet,but my esophagus is scarred and yes I suffered badly last year so decided to stop taking PPI's(lansoprazole),I now take on occasion, slippery elm, honey and oats and there has been an improvement, although my discomfort comes on at night, but bearable.

Don't know about Omeprazole, but they are much the same all these PPI's.However I understand your concern,40mg is the standard dose, but if you can try natural remedies, they do help, ditch the PPi's if you can,I know it's hard but I eat anything now,i am not going to let this worry me unduly,I wish you well, and hope you get some comfort in the future.

    Regards Malc

    Dear Tracieann,

Only one in 80 go on from this to get cancer, remain positive, worry makes it so much worse,I am 70 percent better than this time last year,I put it to the back of my mind, you see both mum and dad both had esophagus cancer,I lost them, but it  does not mean I shall contract it,it's just a case of patience and endurance, try the natural remedies beside your meds, you have nothing to lose, try not to let it get the better of you.

    Best wishes Malc

Hi, I felt the same way as soon I got the news...I was also diagnosed with no dysplasia thanks god and only 2- 2 1/5 cm of Barretts but still worry. I take Dexalint 60mg for about 2 months now, and so far so good I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, Ive have never smoke nor drank any alcohol in my 45 years accoring to my doctor 30% of people barretts goes away but you have to be religious on your diet. I have lost 20 pounds eating healthy,  no sugar, no junk food, no no meats, lots of fruits especially watermelon, carrots juices, manuka honey, lots of veggies. For fish try cod, salmon all cook plain no species. I was diagnosed by accident because I used to have lots of sore throat about twice a year so go figured doctor said it was a good idea we did an endoscopy or few years from now it was a different story. Hope this help god bless us all.

    Hi Tracieann

Sorry to hear your plight, but as a number of fellow sufferers have said it is better if you can remain positive and look for heathly options to help, like you I was diagnosed just before Christmas and have taken and benefited from the advice through the forum, it has been a great help.  The worry etc. was really getting to me but having read the positivity here I am in a much better place.  I take 40mg of Lanzoprazole daily, and dont like the idea of taking it but dare not come off it yet, I have also tried the Aloe Vera juic, Slipper Elm, DGL and Multi-digestive Enzymes, which I think are helping, but perhaps I'm not helping taking both!!

I've lost about 3.5 stone since diagnosed, and get terrible pain and discomfort if I eat too much, so trying to discipline to eat less but more frequently.

    Good luck

      Hi there,

It's an awful thing to have isn't it? Back end of 2013 I was sure that I had something seriously wrong and that something had been missed during my endoscopies(had 3 now),I existed on weetabix, porridge and fruit and toast, but at night it felt like I'd partaken of a 5 course meal,no sleep and terrible discomfort, and diarrhoea.

i was on 40mg of Lansoprazole, twice a day and Ranitidine, after Christmas my daughter suggested some of the problem may have been psychosomatic,I took note, stopped the PPI's,took Slippery Elm and DGL and Enzymes and things improved.

My wife also suggested I was eating too little,so I increased my intake, but ate a little less of everything, and slowly i felt much better.

I have modified my diet, more fruit and nuts,Oats with honey and very little milk,I eat it unheated, but now I can eat curries and mostly

      everything and normal amounts.

i take the occasional tablet, and still have mild discomfort at night mainly, sometimes during the day,but I persevere and am doing quite well.I chew gum, fruit flavours in bed before sleep,it seems to help,so at the moment I can manage,it will not go away, that I know and both my parents died of esophagus cancer,so it is a threat really.

Worry makes it worse,so i keep occupied, and put it on the back burner.

I will try to remain positive,I feel pretty good,so life goes on there are so many much worse off than me,I am 65 in September,a young 65,so I will make the most of whats left of my life, and to hell with it,I love a good fight and I will do my best to counter this.

I have lost no weight,I am a steady 93kg,things can change but I'll be ready.

By the way taking natural remedies with PPI's can make things worse, read up on problems associated with long term use of PPI's,you may need them, but I wish you well, and hope that relief will come, but experiment, the doctor's dispatch PPI's far too readily.

Good luck and hope to hear from you again.

      Regards Malc

Hi tracie. my best advice is to try exercise. I swim at least twice a week and walk the dog daily. I have had a hyatus hernia for years and following a recent endoscopy have like you been diagnosed with barratts. The abdominal pain comes in peaks and troughs and drains my energy.

My wife has has suggested that i keep a daily record of what i eat and how much it hurts.

Perhaps it would be good idea if we all created a list of foods that eased the pain.

I appreciate we are all different but i am getting to the stage where I would try anything if thought it would help.

Like you I take 40mg Omeprazole daily

I take Omeprazole 40 mg and experience no reflux.  Sometimes if I eat too much I feel some discomfort.  There are concerns with bone fracture from the Omeprazole.  and vitamin B 12 loss.  I take calcium and vit. B 12
