I hope you well better soon, i have recently been diagonosed with it too and i am terrified. I just wish some of the major symptoms like the swollen stomach and the problems swollowing would disapear.

I guess we need to try and stay positive and not let it get to us as it will all ger better soon

Hi Tracieann - Three days ago I too was diagnosed with Barretts Oesophagus after an Endoscopy. I am also trying to deal with my Atrial Flutter problems which appeared last September. Having read all the information on this forum I can relate to a number of issues members are dealing with particularly weight loss and the absence of acid reflux. It is early days for me at the moment as I have not started any medical treatment. I am already taking Bisopropol, Warfarin and Simvastatin for my Atrial Flutter so goodness knows what I am likely to finish up taking for my Barretts. I see my GP in a couple of days and my Consultant on 9 July. I have had two biopsies, a CT scan, numerous Xrays and blood tests and I await the findings. Being diagnosed with Barretts has completely floored me. I am 78 years old and have been very fit all my life and view the future with some trepidation.

      Hiya JOINER,

I too have atrial fibrillation, with Barretts, not quite as old as you,I'm 65 in September, but it kinda knocked me out too when I was diagnosed, especially as I lost both my mum and dad with esophagus cancer, but you know I am a lot better now than this time last year.

i do not take the PPI's any more, all I take is Clopidrogel for my blood and Pregabilin for my anxiety, and the occasional statin,I think the doctors do not prescribe the correct medication for Barretts at times, just issue a variety of the same old drugs out of habit,I really do!When I was bad with it last year I took DGL,a digestive enzyme and Slippery Elm along with honey, which combined, helped a lot, since then I now eat practically anything, but just be careful with the amount I eat.

i have alwways been fit, very fit in fact,I have smoked and drunk but not in large quantities, but my dad's doctor told him that smoking was not necessarily the cause of this but rather the effect of the acid on the Esophagus lining.

I had a duodenal ulcer for two years whenI was in my early teens, and none of the proprietary drugs helped me,that is until the doctor tried me on a new drug called Caved-S,which sorted it in two weeks,no problems since, that drug is still available but my doctor would not prescribe it for me,I thought this was strange but there you are.as I say I am pretty good right now,and like you and so many others I suppose the future is unsure, but there again I might get run over by a bus tomorrow,so I will remain positive, you should too, only 1 in 80 go on to get cancer from Barretts so I am reliably informed, let's hope we're not the 1.

I wish you well and don't worry,it won't help any, just take each day as it comes,my dad was 79 when he had 10 inches of his Esophagus removed,he lived another 3 years, and had a wonderful time till he died.Take care, and keep in touch,I would like to learn of your progress.

      Regards Malc

      Hi Joiner,

Sorry to hear you also have Barretts, I like you felt trepidation and anxiety on diagnosis a few months ago, but reading alot of the suggestions from the forum has really helped and the alternative recommendations such as Aloe Vera juice, slippery elm etc do really work and I feel much better now.  Like you I have lost a lot of weight about 3.5 stone. One thing I have to learn is to eat smaller portions and find that difficult as I love my food!!

Keep positve and good luck with the rest of the tests

Hi tracieann, Your response to my concerns was very up-lifting and for which I thank you. I suppose as time passes I won't feel as bad as I feel now, getting used to the idea so to speak but I have gained strength from this forum and in the short time since my diagnosis. Thanks again!

Hi Malcolm, Well said Malcolm! - As I said in my original post it is early days for me as far as Barretts is concerned and I had not yet started any medication. Since then I have seen my GP and he has prescribed PANTOPRAZOLE (20gm - one a day in the morning before food). In your post you mention that Doctors do not seem to prescribe the correct medication for Barretts. What he has just prescribed for me for instance dosen't appear on this Barretts forum. And further, when I read the enclosed pamphlet in the box of tablets there is a warning for people taking Warfarin which I do (5gm per day), but my GP, who knows I take it, never said anything about it. I am in the process of clarifying this with him. It doesn't inspire confidence does it? Regarding the numerous alternatives to ppi I will take note of these for future reference. Many thanks

Hi larraine  I too have gained such a lot in such a short time it has made me feel so much better knowing how others feel and how they deal with it. Also the concern they show is most gratifying. Many thanks.
