Just had a SUPRA PUBLIC OPEN SIMPLE PROSTATECTOMY

Hi Everyone,

I posted a few times on this site about a month ago. I was asking members about the various prostate procedures. My prostate was 263 grams with a large median lobe. I was unable to pee at all prior to surgery. I opted for the SUPRA PUBLIC OPEN SIMPLE PROSTATECTOMY. Surgery was May 2 (8 days ago). It was not pleasant or fun but it is done. I pee like a teenager now. No incontinence. Getting erections etc. Today I get my staples removed. I will go over the biopsy report with him, but he said that when he was looking at the inside of my prostate he said there was no hint of cancer.

If anyone is interested in my surgery or how I am doing please feel free to ask.

Hi Gary - Congratulations are you great outcome and please keep us posted on your progress.

I also have a 250gm prostate but have been buying time with CIC. My uro keeps wanting to do a robotic SP on me. I am curious to know if you also considered a robotic SP or was the open one all that was offered to you?

Also where did you get yours done?

    All the best

Forgot to ask you if you are having any problems with incontinence?

I have had no problems with incontinence since day one. I was very surprised. I was given a list of negative complications from the doctor and none of them happened. My doctor is great he is in Boynton Beach Florida. They only problem I have now is discomfort where the incision is. But that’s to be expected at 12 days out. I was not aware of the robotic surgery at the time that I discussed surgery with my doctor. Later found out he doesn’t do robotic surgery. He is 100% hands-on.  Also I was getting erections right from the beginning. So much so that I was getting pre-cum. Mentioned it to him and he was very shocked.  He said that was very unusual.

Hi Gary - thanks for the info. May I ask how you managed to void prior to the operation? Were you taking Avodart or alpha blockers? May I ask your age? ( I am 69). I am meeting with a new urologist tomorrow and will discuss this procedure but if I get it done I would want a doctor with lots of experience with very big prostates.

When do you get your biopsy report?

All the best and thanks for posting.

I could not tolerate any of the meds. I am very sensitive to meds (side effects. I am 68 years old. I live in Boynton Beach, FL. I should get the FINAL biopsy report this week. The preliminary report said that there were a few cells that MIGHT be cancerous but if they are they are dormant and not growing. I will know for sure soon.

If you don't mind Gary, how did you manage without meds until now, and how long have you had prostate issues? Mine's since about 20 years now.

I just dealt with it. I wore pads in my underwear which I don't have to do now. I kept a collapsible funnel in my pocket so that I pee in a public restroom (in a stall of course). My doc never heard of a man peeing in a funnel before I came along. I used the funnel so I did not pee down the front of my pants.

I met with a new urologist yesterday but he is not experienced in open SPs. Could I contact your uro as he seems very skilled at this procedure? Do you think a one week stay would be enough time to recover from the surgery before flying home? Thanks Gary.
