Kate's Thumper Technique

Posted , 11 users are following.

Kate had a brilliant idea to thump your foot on the ground when getting up from sitting, it seems to "wake up" the muscles and stops the ache we seem to experience then we get up for the first few faltering steps.

Hence Kate's Thumper Technique.

If you haven't tried it, you haven't lived.  It works and is so simple.

Can I express my thanks to Kate53CornUK from everyone here.

Love it. And, just to keep things straight in my mind .... was it Kate promoting the Lazy Bunny approach (sure would be appropriate if the thumper technique came from her too!

    Thanks.

    Awwww, I am famous!!!

Just to add that this works for me when I tap my good foot on the floor.

My laymans theory is that once nerves and muscles are cut the lower half doesn't know where it is in space and time and the tappy foot thing grounds the legs, so to speak.

I was sort of surprised that it worked for other people.

Linda, I think it was the 'Lazy Slob' method of recovery - hah. Jeez, I must get a life (oh, I did!!!!).

Thank you also for the lovely words, Rose. I have met so many really lovely people on this forum which leads me to believe that only the best people get their hips replaced!

Sue, slide around on a plastic bag, knees together, all proper like, and then tap your good foot on the floor a few times before rising. Hope it helps

This I must try, although what with remembering to slide my bad leg forward, using the arms of the chair to push myself up and not breaking the bending or twisting rules I'm not sure at which point to slip this in.  I'm moving by rote - crutches, good leg, bad leg etc.  Sometimes I think it's my brain that needs waking up so I may try thumping my head as well cheesygrin

      Good morning cels,

Well darling, you just got home , so no need to tap yet -

just practice getting out of the chair , on chair, in and out of bed ...

Tapping is great later on when your leg/foot feels kind of asleep -

      How is the swelling ?

big warm hug and ease in to this day

      Morning Renee,

After managing a wonderful 8 hours with my ankles raised last nght the swelling is much better. My heels are quite sore so I supported my ankles on a high memory foam pillow and dangled my heels just over the edge to take the weight off.

Woke up to a lovely foggy day here in Northamptonshire.

      How are you hun?

You give the best hugs ever xxx

Morning, Cels, the tap to the good leg seems to focus attention to putting all your energy into the good leg to hold up the bad. As your good leg gets stronger you'll find rising is easier.

Hold chair arms, tap good foot on floor  with bad foot out to front and push up.

Crutches -  had difficulty changing my style after the op. Using crutches before meant using the 'marching' technique, left right, left, right but after the op, as I understand it, you use the crutches to support your bad leg as you walk. So crutches and bad leg on the floor and swing through with good leg, take the weight and repeat.

I have 'comfy' handles on crutches and sticks which seems to make positioning so much easier.

Please don't thump your head! I did find writing things down on the blackboard on the kitchen wall helped me to remember things that the drugs fogged up!!!

Ah, it's your good leg you tap.  I've been beating the heck out of my op leg lol (not really).  Haven't tried it yet.

My critch technique is quite good I think.  It seemed to come quite naturally though I've never had cause to use them before.   I use my little trolley to transfer things from room to room - it has been a godsend - but I know I don't walk as I should with it.

I have a little notebook by my side and write down when I take my pain meds.  I try to keep ahead of the pain but took one lot an hour late yesterday because I wasn't in pain.  I was both cross and happy.

Take it easy there, as Renee says, you are at such an early stage, don't want to loosen anything.

Good idea.  They gave me some in hospital when I knocked my over-bed table and the water jug fell over and poured all over my bed, the floor and my slippers.  I'll search them out.  Thanks Sue.

I never got sore heels thanks to my sox, also if there is no one around in the morning, your feet wont get cold.

Have a good weekend, rest when you can, be good.

Have found them and got them on now.  They're a very fetching red with white rubbery spots cheesygrin

I was surprised the hospital have them to me.  Apart from a pair of crutches and a thing to take the staples out that's all I got.  I had to buy everything else.  I could have got a toilet seat but I already got one because I was struggling getting on and off the loo.

Incidentally Graham, one thing I really wish I had taken into hospital with me was lip salve.  My lips were so dry and peeling and I picked at them and made my lower lip bleed.  No idea if it's a common problem but I had my son bring me some in.

      Just a thought.

OOh yes - i took some in too - I'll add it to the never-ending list of requirements for hospital on the website.

I have sticks and did the sticks, bad leg, good leg, then a different physio showed me the march and I find that easier.
