Knee replacement surgery 8 days out

Posted , 21 users are following.

Hi all,

I am a 48 male that had a total knee replacement on right knee 8 days ago. I can not lift my right leg, very limited rom, very painful at night, always very stiff. I went to see doctor he said there is a lot of fluid in knee but looks good. Told me to rest and elevate knee. I have a lot of old scar tissue in this knee as well. Everyone says it will get better. Can't sleep can't walk can't do anything without pain. Anyone else with same problems

    Lol....just wait and read!

I feel like I've been demon possessed since my TKR and I'm pretty close in age and situation to yours.

I'm 5 wks out and I'm looking for a building to jump off of!

Maybe someone else would be better to talk to than me! Lol

    Good luck mate!

Tom....don't pay any attention to David....he teaches little old rich ladies how to hit tennis balls so they won't bruise 'em. He moans a lot but what can you expect from a guy that lives in a luxury high rise and is pampered by the elite of Chicago.

Hi Tom, I'm 6 was post op.  Like the others have said, you are experiencing what we all have.  The stiffness slowly, and I mean SLOWLY will get better. As soon as dr. OKs it, I recommend hot showers.  That helps stiffness for me.

They told me I could shower run hot water on areas that are stiff but no luck. I rub the area no luck, time will tell I hope

    Hi Tom!

Don't worry! It SEEMS awful, but it actually WILL get better!

I couldn't lift my leg for weeks! My therapist who came to my home while I was "housebound" (insurance term) showed me how to loop a belt and hoist my leg up onto the bed or couch. Once I had more physical therapy my quad muscles got stronger and I was able to lift my leg.

I had A LOT of swelling with my left knee. Until the swelling went down, neither bending or straightening were very successful.

I slept in ten to twenty minute mini naps for quite awhile. Around nine weeks things improved.

My right knee was a lot easier for some unknown reason. It was a pleasant surprise.

I'm nearly a year in with my first TKR. I can do pretty much anything I did prior to all my osteoarthritic trouble which began about five years ago in earnest.

Be patient. You will reach this, too. First, however, you have much healing to do. Rest, eat well, elevate, ice, and drink plenty of water . Listen to your body. It will tell you what it is ready to do. You don't have to compete with anyone else because only YOU matter to YOU!

Stay positive, and look for small improvements. I have continued to keep a journal so that I can see how far I have come since my "left leg feels like a tree trunk filled with CEMENT" days!

Keep us posted on your progress OK?

Sending you prayers of calm and patience tonight!

Thank you for the words of encouragement I really need them. Talking to people on this forum is amazing and knowing I am not the only one going through this. It also gives me a place to vent my anger my disappointment in my healing process. I am just so depressed with the pain the stiffness the swelling the bruising the being alone, did I think it would be this hard no, all I can do is one day at a time, I know it should get easier with time. Thanks

Cheryl, I liked your "tree trunk filled with cement" analogy - just the way mine felt.  And for some reason I forgot the looped belt (tie) Yoga trick, and wasn't reminded by anyone.  Also, trying to put on socks/slippers/shoes is hopeless for awhile.  Thanks for the smile!  I'm 4+ weeks post op for PKR, pain is better but surelly not gone, stiffness is still considerable but better during the day.  The first 3 weeks were miserable, now just the drugery of exercise and frustration with reduced stamina.  Thanks.

      Hi Mary!

I STILL don't wear socks! I am a bit nervous about crossing my knee over my other knee to put on socks. I am always cautious about any pivoting movements.

I happened to have those Fuzzy Crocs and wore them as BOOTS all winter. No socks needed! I wear slippers in the house if it is cold and bare feet if it is warm.

My left leg sometimes feels stiffer than my right. It rained today, and my arthritic joints were painful. My knees were pretty good except for stiffness.

Be patient, and keep soldiering on. If you feel crappy on a given day, REST and give yourself permission to DO NOTHING. I wrap up in my polar fleece, have a nice cup of tea and read or watch TV. Does wonders for my attitude, any pain, and any stiffness.

Other days I am busy, busy and sometimes overdo it. Time then for more Ibuprofen than usual!

Best to take a day at a time. (Early on I was taking an HOUR at a time!)

Things will get better, but first there is that HEALING THING you gotta do.

Wishing you patience and the ability to LAUGH at all the craziness. It really helps!😁

You and David need to start an agency that rents out girls for hire. Then you'll be so mesmerized by their beauty  you will forget about the pain💃🏻💃🏻

All kidding aside --- I really wasn't kidding- you guys need help. No one should be alone during this. Does ur insurance cover visiting nurses, home companions, in house pt?

I live in the Boston area, wish I could help!
