Laser TURP op

Anyone had a green light laser TURP operation, I had a cystoscopy on Thursday and was told I need a operation, I got in on Tuesday and was told I have to take it easy for 3 weeks and not driving ?  So wanted to find out from anyone who has had it done that can shed some light on it all.

I don't know about the UK but in the USA doctors will tell their patients the good news but not the bad. They don't want their patients to go elsewhere and lose out on a lucrative procedure that they know best and so they will schedule the operation.

The OP is having it done privately but the vast majority of UK patients have it done by salaried NHS surgeons who have nothing to gain by getting another patient.

You will find plenty of men in the UK and in every country who have had horrible outcomes with any kind of turp and plenty who have had reasonably good outcomes it all comes down to two things with any kind of turp

1-what each persons particular surgical need is

    2-who does the surgery

just to enlighten you as to reality, turp for me in my particular case was going to require the following:

1-slice my penis urethra up its entire length

2-laser away half my prostate including its urethra

3-cut away much of my bladder neck

all this just so that I could pee better!  here were the outcomes of that turp in my case

1-retro ejaculation=sperm no longer comes out the natural way! but goes into your bladder!

2-once the bladder neck is compromised the bladder will not hold urine leaving my prostate full of urine 24/7 along with possible permanent incontinence unless my lower prostate valve could hopefully hold the urine, along with possible urine infections into the blood if the prostates new artificially created lining by the laser fails.

3-possible penis urethra damage leaving lesions that block the flow and require repeated very painful surgery

4-cutting away half the prostate which surgeons call shelling it out would be brutal to all the tiny important bits that have important jobs but no loner exist.

The guys that as you say were being "so negative" were being good friends to you.

Are you talking about GL laser or TURP ? The OP is having GL.

"slice my penis urethra up its entire length" That's a new one to me!

You say 'Was going to' Does that mean you did not have it done?

I did not have it done and chose a much less invasive method called FLA which truly was a walk in the park with very good results, no pain, and no damage, and yes the urologist that was going to do turp on me said he would slice up the length of my penis urethra so as to cause less damage rather than fitting the tools in without slicing the urethra with the added advantage of more blood flow so less friction on the urethra to obtain less damage, he said this was better than not slicing and harming the urethra, although I must confess he was not using laser but a hot wire which he would switch on when in the prostate, I think everyone contemplating turp of any kind should google youtube turp surgery and see for themselves and fully understand what is about to happen rather than believing urologists who say too little too late.

Brain  So gland you did not have it.  But the doctors are not giving Tony a chance to change his mind.  I still wand to know what is the rush.  Something is wrong here.  I know it's 8:30 PM in the UK now  Don't know if there still is time.  Take care  Ken

British DJ Tony Blackburn had his GL the day after diagnosis.

Tony Blackburn has had prostate surgery, it emerged yesterday.

However, the veteran DJ, did not have cancer, doctors discovered.

Blackburn, 73, had a two-hour operation to remove part of his enlarged prostate gland using hi-tech laser treatment at a London hospital.

Last night, a friend revealed he was recovering well after the surgery, which took place this month. He said Blackburn had surgery just 24 hours after his symptoms started, adding: ‘Fortunately, he doesn’t have cancer.

'He awoke in pain at his home in Hertfordshire and was operated on the next day

‘But he simply can’t bear being away from a mic for too long and has been able to host his two commercial radio station slots on Sundays.’

Ttwlr   This is the last time I am going to say a word.  Just had a talk with a very nice guy in the UK  He told me that your health care puts the Urolift has the first pick for BPH  Why is this doctor going passed the other procedure to do this surgery on you.  What is the rush.  Ken.

Urolift is still way down the list of NHS procedures. I've still to be told how it stops the prostate from growing within its restraints.

No procedure stops the prostate from growing. Most remove part of it by different means, Urolift pretty much clamps it down and out of the way. The prostate continues to grow regardless. For good candidates (no enlarged median lobe) its track record is comparable to many other procedures.

I just had a face to face chat with a man that lives in south wales.  I guess the system NICE in the UK I was told the first step for PBH is Urolift and TURP is the last  LASER is just before that.  I guess they look at the cost.  I'm not saying he should have the Urolift But he is not being giving time to look into anything.  Now what the rush is and why he was not been giving any other option.  It's funny.  It's like take it or leave it.  I don't think he is ready for it.   Let's hope he is  Ken

That is right.  The prostate does continues to grow but not all men will have a fast growing prostate. It's all in you genes.  No bun intended My father was 82 when he died no problem at all.  His brother's died in there 80's no problem.  My brother is 75 he has had no problem.  My prostate started when I was 47.  That is when I was told that I had kidney stones and prostate cancer.  From that time it has been down hill.  I have learned a lot for the internet my doctor and from many of the men on this site.  I picked the Urolift because of the side effects.  I was giving time to research it.  Which we all have to do.  I have 4 clips on my prostate and for now it is great.  If in 4 or 5 years if I have to have a few more clips so be it.  I know for sure I will never be talk into having any thing cut away.  There have been to many bad results that out way the good.  This is my opinion that is it.  This is where we all learn.  God bless and let's all hope we have made the right choice for our lives......Ken.

Then when the time comes for that growth to be treated it must be a more difficult procedure. It has not been around long enough to know future outcomes.

Not so. NICE have yet to come to do a definite report on Urolift.

Here is a recent bit for the Forum to read and I'm going to PM you several links.

The Committee concluded that the UroLift system is effective in relieving symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It noted that the degree of symptom relief outcomes is slightly less than that after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP), but it is sufficient and clinically important. The Committee recognised that the duration of symptom relief after using the UroLift system is uncertain. It concluded that it is similar in the medium term (up to 3 years) to the comparators but that further evidence on durability and the need for subsequent procedures would be useful.

Urolift has been around for 5 years if you count the trails.  I have seen a report and have talk with the inventor of the Urolift and they have been in contact with the men from the trails and they are all doing well.  It will last for many years.  And it is the only procedure without side effects.  Ken  Thank you for the links

PS.  No one know how long the laser and the turp will last.  Many men on here have had 2 or 3 repeats  I would rather a clip on my prostate they a knife or a laser  Have a sweet day  Ken

From GL to my Thulium/Holmium procedure was eight years. It grew a lot more in those eight years than it did in the preceding eighteen. I did not question why that happened.

Maybe that is what they should be doing and researching.  Why do some men's prostate grow faster then others...  Ken

Not likely true. Rezum, PAE, FLA, Urolift and even Greenlight and TURP can all be redone. Personally, I'd rather have Rezum done every 5 years than Greelight (or TURP or Holep) once. There is almost no chance of any serious permanent side effect from the non invasive procedures and there is (admittedly low with a good experienced surgeon, but there are lots of horror stories detailed on this site) a chance with TURP/Holep/Greenlight. And with all of them we know that the prostate continues to grow.
