lax ligaments, not 100% sure what this means?

Hi I started s discussion quite a while ago now while I was waiting to see a knee specialist after having s torn cartilage ect. Well I had my consultation after the MRI scans today to be told my tear in the cartilage is gone which I thought was very odd seeing as my pain has bee. A lot worse these last couple of months. I was then told its just the way I was made and that I've got lax ligaments. I get trouble with my hips also and a year ago a managed to some how slightly dislocaste my shoulder in my sleep and I'm just wondering if this is all linked and if anyone has had this before. I've got to do physio to help my knees but I hope this isn't something I've got to put up with forever

Any help would be much appreciated

    Hi

    Try not to worry.

I spoke to a physio today who told me that exercises can help to treat meniscal tears as the execrises strengthen the muscles which in turn act as a naural splunt for the ligaments.

      Hi thanks for your reply.

The meniscal tear has actually gone which I'm glad about but the pain I get and painful clicking and giving way at the knee is worse than before , my MRI scan doesn't show anything this is what's cause me the confusion.

Have you looked into the possibility of a Bakers cyst.

You could have a bit of debris floating around, could be catching &cause pain.  Drinking plenty of fluids and the physio.  Work hard on developing your muscles and everything should fall into place.  Hope all goes well.

Hi thanks for your reply. I'm going to give the physio a good god, I'll try anything to be "normal" again its been going on and progressed slot for 6 years now so really fed up with it. Just hope the physio works this time. MRI shows nothing bad anymore so if the physio doesn't work god knows what will happen just have to deal with it I suppose. I'm only 22 so wanted to get it treated as best and quick as possible

wow tear in cartilage is gone !!!!! unless its a miricle  i dont see how a tear in cartilage is suddenly gone ! i think you should get a second opinion especially when your knee gives way and you have pain .i hope that everything goes well for you but i would get second /third opinion just in case something is missed .mri dont always show the whole picture from experience of different consultants they do differ and nobody should go with any op on knees without at least 2 different opinions

      Hi Linda

I understand tthat a tear can occurr from a sporting injury where the leg/knee is twisted. For example spikes in football boots getting stuck in the grund then footballer tries to move the leg and ends up twisting the knee and tearing the ligaments. Footballers knee.

yes jean that is true what i was saying to heathy123 is that  if she was told she had torn cartilage there is no way it could just disapear so maybe she never had a torn cartilage that is why she should get one or two opinions on the problem because having gone through ops that went wrong im concerned that anyone would go with one diagnosis

I did used to play rugby I gave up 4 years ago and the last 2 seasons was when my knee problems started there weren't actually a certain point I thought I'd hurt my knee it was more of a build up n gradually got worse. They said when I had the tear in the cartilage over a year ago it was only a small tear and I did have some private treatment on it (laser therapy, electrotherapy, ultrasound and taping) so whether that healed the small year in the time I was having the treatment I don't know but still doesn't explain this ongoing pain and discomfort and giving way of the knee, but yes I agree may have to look into getting a second opinion, thanks for your help.

yes  i agree on  going pain needs to be explained do you mind if i ask how old you are ? its just that i feel i was playing sport before i had my tkrs and i believe it probably fast tracked my ops im nearly 58 and was 55 when i had to have tkrs on both knees a few years before my cartilages in both knees were torn and i had keyhole surgery to trim them but to be honest it was a pointless op as many people tell me the same story that shortly after these ops you will need tkr . i have a friend who just 5mths ago went in for cartilage op to cut torn cartilage she felt great after and had no pain ive talked to her a week ago and she told me she is in alot of pain so it looks like she also will need tkr in the near future ,.my knee used to give way when i had torn cartilage try and not go for surgery for torn cartilage if you can as it dose put you on a fast track to tkr if your not a young person in my opinion cartilage op only helps the very very young i wish you the very best

I'm only 22, main reason why I want it sorted before it gives me more trouble in the future. An op is the last thing I want to be honest as I'm petrified of hospitals lol and also heard before from others about knee ops not going so well. My cousin has had a knee op at 24 and has been fine since but was completely different to torn cartilage so really not sure what to do for the best. Thank you

you are so young !!! i would get it sorted and get back to living  boy i wish i my knees were that young lol i would not be afraid if i were you go to a consultant and be confident of a great outcome if you were over 40 id be concerned about your outcome but not at your age i promise you will be fine anything serious at your age would be extremly rare most of us on here are alot older and have artritis you are not in that situation so just get it checked out by a good consultant x

Yeah I've been trying for the past 3 years as its been ongoing and getting worse the past 6 so hopefully I will get there sooner rather than later just feel like I'm going round in circles. Thank you x

Take the plunge, speak to your GP, ask them about the consultant who would do the op. Ask all the questions that have been worrying you, you are entitled to have your fears put to rest. Then you can get on with doing everything a 22 year old should be doing x
