LBT Normal but....

Hi am new to this site and hoping someone could help, for past year I have been experiencing pain in my liver/right hand side through to my back, I had an ultrasound that showed a fatty liver(I am overweight and started losing but still have 7 stone to lose) I was then told by my docs to eat healthy and get blood tests done, got results today and everything is normal! Is it possible to have pain from fatty liver even if ur bloods are perfect, thanks in advance

It could be it's on the mend but if you continue to lose weight then it will probably go completely, if you think it's gone and forget the healthy option it can and probably will come back, it's the end result that counts, good luck

    Hi Laura,

I had pain on my right side for a while. I saw a heptoligist who said that it wouldn't be my liver causing me pains (I had raised LFTs and scan showed fatty liver) on a re-scan my scan was normal and so were my LFTs. The scans were done 1 month appart. I saw 4 Drs (just general practitioners) 2 said liver can cause pain 2 said it wouldn't. I suffered in pain for over a year and a half. This increased my symptoms to get a lot worse etc. but I had a HIDA scan which showed my gallbladder to be the issue. Is you pain made worse by anything? Do you have any other symptoms?

If it is a fatty liver then you need to exercise to remove the fat from the organ. Change in diet will only do so much.

Other things it could be: pancreas, sphincter of oddi, IBS, refered back pain, lung pain, heart pain, stomach pains etc.

I would get a second opionion a&e possibly more tests!

    Good luck!

Does it feel like something is trying to push out from under your ribs?  This is the sensation I get when I have bloating.  Which can be a symptom of Fatty Liver (I have NAFLD). Also If I lie down you can actually see a slight slope from right down to left when my liver swells.  My numbers have dropped but still have a ways to go.  Like you I'm overweight.  Have lost 17 lbs. but doctor cautioned me that losing too much too soon can actually irritate the condition and make it worst.

It's just a constant pain more like a stitch from top right though to back, it does come and go and I usually get it if I drink fizzy juice or certain food, that's why they thought it was gallstones at first but ultrasound only showed fatty liver, a few years ago I lost 8 stone in 8 months but fell pregnant with my now 1 year old don't know if rapid weight loss maybe added to it,

I'd say it's probably the gas and bloating from the drinks and food. I don't drink a lot of pop but when I do it's not long after I feel the same sensation. Same as when I eat greasy foods or big meals.

I have read that when your liver has issues it does cause your gallbladder to have issues too. Sometimes creates a "leaky gallbladder"  where bile will drip out into the intestines.  It's all connected.

I've started eating smaller meals more frequently.  I follow the food lovers fat loss system and they encourage lots of water and eating small meals with a protein included every time every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Try not drinking fizzy juice and the foods you think could be the cause for a few days and see what happens.  Livers don't like high carb or surgary things.  so incorporating more fresh veggies/fruit is a good start. though I caution you to not load up on potatoes because they're a huge carb culprit. and carbs are really just hidden surgars. Same as white bread, rice and pasta.  Try the whole grain varieties. I like to use the rainbow pasta. My kids don't realize it's healthy and made in part with veggies..lol

hello Laura i too was found with fatty liver along with some liver cysts which i am being monitored for.  My LFT (liver function blood tests) were normal to start with and have had them recently done again after 5 months and they are still normal and within the range they should be.  I am also Type 2 diabetic.  I now go to WW and have lost a stone already but still have about 4 stones to lose - don't give up and in a way, am glad i know about i as i would never have known about it unless i'd had the scan (i originally thought i had gallsones).  I too still get a mild discomfort under my right rib but not sure if it is related to the cysts or the fatty liver.

Hi Laura yes it is my scan too showed fatty liver, blood tests normal like you. i was and still do get pains under my right side through to my back, need to keep of fatty foods and my love of chocolate. Drinking aloe vera juice which is an internal healer has helped a lot and the pain is much less now.

I have been dealing with what I called intercostal pain in my rib area for almost 6 years after falling down skiing, and breaking my left collar bone.  Over the years I have seen chiropractors, an accupuncturist, muscle therapist, etc.  All had brief help but it returned.  Mixed in with that, a year ago was a pressure feeling area just below and to the right of my bottom rib.  This ended up being a 3x sized gall bladder with 12% functionality based on a Hida scan.  It came out.  This summer, I had a series of pain block shots which fixed all but the lowest rib discomfort on the right side.

Over the past few years, I have had ALP #'s in the 140's, though between a broken bone and a bad gall bladder, we wrote it off.  This year, my gp ran an iso enzyme and found out the ALP problem is liver.  My gall bladder surgeon said I had a slightly fatty liver, which would not be the ALP source.  My liver doctor agreed and ordered a Hida scan, which came back fine, though liver pressure during the contraction drug was pretty significant.   I have a liver biopsy on Tuesday as all blood tests came up negative for anything.

I did start noticing discomfort getting worse after eating dairy so I played a little with that theory and avoided cold dairy for a week.  No pressure under the rib, but still the sharp rib pain.  I have been taking lactase before meals for the past week and the gut pressure is less.

My liver doctor says fatty liver and anything else he suspects I might have liver wise won't cause the rib pain.  I have seen way too many people complaining of the same thing I have felt that also have liver issues, so I question that!

I am not overweight (6' 3", 198#), drink casually, but consume too much McD's and processed foods.

We'll see what the biopsy says next week.

    Good luck, all!

I had that same feeling and my altra sound some fatty liver. My number were ok.. however. they go even better afer 5 weeks of Very low carb diet. Remember starches are sugar.. Fatty liver is not caused by fatty foods.. it is caused by high carbs,, flour, sugar, pastas, potaotes, crakers, breads, all that sort of stuff.. Get those things out of your diet and you will not only lose weight, but your fatty liver will go away too.. mine did.. and drink lots and lots of water, water is the best detox for the liver.. eat healthy protien and good carbs.. ( carbs that come from veggies ) usually not root veggies, beause they have more carbs than others.. good luck..

Anthony, Yes.. in about 5 weeks of low carbs, lots of water. Carbs have been poison to us for years.. Making us sick.. even the "so called" multi grain breads. They are better, but still lack enough fiber and are high in carbs. during the 5 weeks I also lost 10 pounds.. So whatever it was it did the trick..

Biopsy results came back "unremarkable", not even a mention of the slightly fatty liver a lap surgeon and an ultrasound tech said they saw.  I have to go back every 6 months for Liver Panel tests to watch elevated ALP numbers that have no apparent reason.

Great news Anthony, so a fatty liver can heal itself then going by your results.
