Left Hip Replacement is it worse than right?

Posted , 25 users are following.

On the 22nd of November I will have a total hip replacement on my left hip. This morning a friend of mine told me that I am probably wasting my time I would be using a walker for the rest of my life that a left hip replacement  never does right. Has anyone heard this. I am really upset about it all..sad

Hi there. She doesnt sound a very positive friend to me! My limited experience may be of help to you. I had a left THR last Thursday after years of pain & feel great already. Apart from normal scar/muscle pain, im doing really well walking around on crutches. So i really hope your 'friend' has it wrong & we can both look forward to our new painfree future! All the best, be strong

I am so thankful for this forum. When I see all the positive replies it is really helping me get the courage to do this!

Yes I agree with margaret45049.   Most people I talk to have success then not.    If you are in pain and have a hard time walking the surgery has to be your option.

I can't even go to the bathroom in my own house without using a walker. I have to use it everywhere I go. Without it I tend to fall and I have had one big fall already. Got my right arm and my head hit a board on a wheel chair ramp so concussion. It also isn't nearly as painful with the walker, I can take some of the weight off of my left leg. The way I see it is anything right now would be a great improvement!

I am going to do this for sure!!!  This pain and limping around has been going on since 2016. They kept saying it was my back and that I had a tiny bit of arthritis in my hip...well it is a lot of arthritis and I need this done. It is amazing to me the friends you have fall off the edge of the earth the worse you get. I guess it is too much trouble to go anywhere with me because of the walker ...pretty sad!  Guess these people really aren't my friends especially when my closest friend tells me that I will never walk without a walker and never be able to work again...

Sounded like a load of BS when she wrote it. She must be mad at someone and taking it out on my feelings...she should know right now isn't the time to say things like this to me...she is close to being replaced after 20 years of friendship

Yes exactly. Focus on yourself she clearly has her own issues. No difference in having a left or right replacement. Once you have recovered you will walk unaided and be pain free.

I am so glad I wrote on this forum. With her saying that to me this morning it really sent me on a whirl of emotions..pretty much about in tears when I read that. With hearing all this from friends that have been through it really is helpful!!  Thank you so much from Texas

Hi I am 43 and just had my left thr about 3 weeks now still on crutches but getting better every day . I had my right hip done last year and that one is fantastic pain free so hopefully the left will be the same. It is worth it in the end

I will be in the same boat with you. I will need my right hip done as well. So, one at a time. Some folks do a bilateral i.e. both at once! Yikes!
