Left Hip Replacement is it worse than right?
Posted , 25 users are following.
On the 22nd of November I will have a total hip replacement on my left hip. This morning a friend of mine told me that I am probably wasting my time I would be using a walker for the rest of my life that a left hip replacement never does right. Has anyone heard this. I am really upset about it all..

I do not use a stick or walker and all pain is gone. Yes a stick or walker for some time post op, and it is hard work building up the muscles again
it does work, go for it

I sent her an email back and asked her where she got her information from that I would like to read it and then copy and show my dr at my appointment today. That was four hours ago and not one email from her...she has never had any sort of surgery like this and if she does I do hope that no one says things like that to her...pretty sad of her to do this to me right now!

Hi your friend I am sorry to say clearly doesn't have a clue what she is talking about. Dismiss what she has said whether it was said with good intension or not.
Having been in great pain prior to my hip replacement having my new hip is the best thing.
Stay positive and go for it ...it will be worth it.

I have heard no difference between hips. Several friends that have done both hips & two that did just left. Recovery time & back to full activities in 4-5 months for all of them. I am three weeks post right hip & now walking 3-4 miles each day. No pain no limping.

That sounds odd - I had a left THR in October last year - and now I walk pain-free, commute in to London for 2 hours/day (and another 2 back out), climb up escalators and stairs without problems, walk for miles, cycle, and even got up on my shed roof to repair it earlier this year
.
This, all despite my operation not going to plan, and me ending up with a mis-aligned hip joint. I was tested today by my new surgeon, and have pain free full range of movement. He is very happy with my progress.
I gave up using cane (U.K. walking sticks) at about 6 weeks ... so I really do not know what your friend is referring to, but it is normal to be so much better after this operation. It gives you your life back again, pain-free.

What absolute nonsense. How can there possibly be a difference? I had my left hip replaced 12 days ago and I'm already walking around the house without any support and walked to the end of my road and back (about 350m) with just a cane. I take ibuprofen and a bit of paracetamol when needed. The grinding OA pain has disappeared completely. You'll be fine and I'd struggle to remain friends with someone so negative. Big hug to you.

She called me and told me what she meant was if my right side hurt also then I was probably wasting my time. My right side hurts because I have some bursitis still and tendenitis also. When you can't walk it effects both sides. All the limping and forcing more weight on the other side isn't good for anyone. I know as soon as this pain goes away of the grinding of my hip joints that my right side will correct itself. I don't think she has ever had any issues like this so she really can't understand how painful this is.
On a good note I took all my chest xrays and EKG, blood tests etc yesterday for the pre surgery physical and everything was great so I am good to go on the 22nd!

Yes, those who have a healthy body do not understand.
I understand your deep disappointment.
Chin up...all of us in this discussion group are hippies...we are each here for each other.

Yep - only people who have been through the pain of OA, and the THR recovery have any understanding at all.
