Left Hip Replacement is it worse than right?

On the 22nd of November I will have a total hip replacement on my left hip. This morning a friend of mine told me that I am probably wasting my time I would be using a walker for the rest of my life that a left hip replacement never does right. Has anyone heard this. I am really upset about it all..

I've literally just had my left hip replaced. Surgery completed 10 pm on Tuesday. I used a walker for precisely two minutes then graduated back to my crutches. I am in the least pain I have had for months. In fact, not really pain, more an ache. And I arrived home two hours ago, just a day and a half after surgery completed. And I have other issues too, so that's a pretty good start! Don't worry. Your friend is wrong. Everyone had their own story. But mine is that you should go for it.

Can you walk around somewhat..like to open the door and let the dog out or go to the bathroom on your own?

I have now been home two days and have sacked my friend who has been staying over for disaster management. I live alone so pooch is in kennels until next Thursday - he's a boisterous 14 month old border collie so I wanted some time to adapt before he came home. But yes, I can get aound the house on one crutch easily and thinking about trying for walking stick soon. Opening door and getting outside - I have steps at both doors - I can manage. I haven't found anything that I struggle with. I just do things slowly, in my own time. It's not like there's a competition or I have a full diary! So to get out of bed, shower and dress is about an hour. Today was a bit easier and quicker than yesterday. So what? The point is I did it.
You'll be fine!

But the person to talk to is your surgeon, he will hopefully have done hundreds of hips and can reassure you from a position of knowledge.

Yup, we have all been in your shoes except for your one friend. .
You are going to love burning up that mortgage note...burnt mine last March...I had my counting down to the days...lol
And retirement is awesome...just a month into it but loving every moment.
Yes, each one of use understands, you may direct your frustration my way any time because others did it for me.
Once you have the second hip done, your balance may return...you may be burning the walker as well.

The waiting to have it done is the most difficult part, the anticipation of what will happen...
You have done a great job with the questions

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Oh my gosh your friend is completely ill advised to tell you that, you are NOT wasting your time having a THP trust me!
I couldn't walk, couldn't stand, couldn't sleep and at forty with two little girls, my life would have been confined to a walker.
I was terrified of having my hip replaced, but had no choice, took the plunge with the help of all the amazing people on here, and I have never looked back.
Eleven months on I am dancing, walking, riding, cycling, playing with my girls and I have a life back. DO NOT listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. Hip replacements DO work for millions and millions of people, and the best way to end up using a walker forever is not to have one. Good luck my friend, and stay on here for support, educated information and true experiences.
