Let's talk about tiredness & sweating waterfalls

Aloha!

My son had LTHR ten weeks ago & is here in Hawaii for a conference. The heat & humidity can be debilitating but it was after sunset when we walked from one end of the mall to the other. He tried on & bought jeans & a few drugstore items. By the time he was done & had walked back, he was winded, exhausted & sweating profusely.

The tiredness has come up in Lynn's & mentioned by Cels, Graham & others. It is son's greatest concern. He is facing an RTHR & can only wonder what additional effects that will have. It's hard to tell a 30 y/o to put his life on hold. Are any of you hippies able to overcome this lack of energy & stamina? Any suggestions are welcomed gratefully.

The sweating. He has never sweated like this. It all started with the opioid painkillers - he sweated & itched intensely in reaction to one of them. Have you experienced this, even weeks or months after the surgery?

Mahalo in advance for any advice or ideas you may have.

Soos, I never had the sweating problem, but I had the energy-drain big time. He should be getting over it soon, by 4 or 5 months. If not, then his fatigue may be being caused by something else. Conferences are exhausting for everybody, and heat and humidity can take it out of a person, too. When he is back home, he might feel better.

Mahalo Annie. You're right that conferences keep you moving from room to room, even building to building in this case. I spoke with son when he got back to the hotel & he said it was exhausting interacting with people. But he did speak with everyone he's planned to. Not bad for a basically shy person. I've given it some thought & I myself was shy until an occasion when I HAD to address an audience. I had a good response, which gave me confidence.

Thanks Annie. I'm happy you now have more energy, as I know you have children you have to keep up with.

Good for son, Soos - seems as if he is making  a really big effort and overcoming a lot of obstacles !!!

How are you doing, darling - are you happy to be home again?

      wishing you a good night

      big warm hug

P.S. I  also was shy but then was forced to mingle with potential sponsors ( Touroperator) -if not I would be fired !!!!

Aloha Renee! It's a struggle for son. Friday he couldn't shake off the effects of the sleeping pill, so he had to talk to everyone on Saturday.

Yes, I'm thrilled to be home - catching up with everything & everyone. I've scheduled a consult about my knee. Already went to the hair tech who basically asked, "Who did that to you???"

Oh, gosh - so many of us are former Shy Folks!

I need to get to bed so I can wake up to make the bacon & French toast I promised the husband.

      Mahalo Miss Aloha Hippy Renee!

Aloha!! Yes my surgeon put me on benedryl because pain killers cause itching especially of the face he said. It helped me.

I would love to know the answer to the sweating. I assumed it was because I have not worked out since I had a bad hip. I go to therapy for 40 minutes and it's like I ran a marathon. 2 weeks post op here.

Aloha Erika! Were you prescribed the Benadryl before or after you experienced itching? Mahalo.

The sweating was a side effect of the opioids. I wonder if it is something that continues long after you've stopped taking those drugs? I'm so sorry you're experiencing this too.

Thanks so much for sharing, Erika

    Aloha Soos,

I had the sweats at night - less during the day. And it was fierce - way worse than 'the change'! This got better once I was off the heavier drugs.

The fatigue and lack of energy is tough as I thought I was through the worst of it but it comes back when you least expect it. As I explained in a separate posting, I think that part of it is related to being 'on alert'. For some reason ... cheesygrin I have become protective of my operated hip! Crowds are still hard to manage ... avoiding being jostled and keeping my balance. One uses mental and emotional energy as well physical in these situations and it can be exhausting at times.

However! I went to my first 'Scotch tasting' today as part of a friend's milestone birthday. What fun and what great Scotches and I learned a lot!  My group decided that I needed to pilot the use of good Scotch as an alternative to the pains meds on the market right now. I must admit that it has some appeal. I will check back with my surgeon and let you know.  twisted

Back to the energy/stamina question ... I have heard people suggest checking for anemia, my GP recommended several supplements and a high protein diet. I had a very poor appetite for about 6 weeks and found this last quite hard so started making protein shakes - it helped.

    Any other suggestions out there?

Mahalo Soos for this discussion topic.

      Hi Linda!

I wish I'd seen your "on alert" post. What you say makes sense - you are on guard against being hurt. Poor son's shoulders are almost up to his ears with tension! I hope he can get a massage soon.

Linda - Scotch as medicine might get awfully expensive! Son told me the conferees have been hitting the bars after the sessions every evening & he felt he had to join them tonight.

Your other ideas about checking for anemia & protein shakes sound very valid.

In my research on All That is Hippy I've found there is a huge difference between what medical professionals say and the reality that patients are going through.

Mahalo to Linda & all the hippies for helping me help my son.

    aloha Soos,

That cannot be pleasant .... my experience is more or less the same as Linda's - soaking wet at night , changing sleep shirts twice -  not so much during the day -

I still have little stamina - but then I am also  carrying too much weight - that does not help -

maybe different medication might help with sweating and itching?

Also, to be in chronic pain is so exhausting -

    big warm embrace

Oh, I've missed this! Renee he stopped all narcotics after 3 weeks & the itching stopped. The sweating at what seems like minimal exertion continues. He has wipes with him so he can swab himself down. smh

He was in more pain in the right hip Saturday as he was on the go 8 to 5. Hopefully acetaminophen & naproxen will help.

      Mahalo & good morning Renee!

    Hey

I did experiance the night sweats to and l thought they had gone a month or so ago then bang out of blue l have a bad week and they come back again

I was told at the begining it was your bodies ammune system fightng of the trauma its had from the operations. As it had no idea that the ops are to help you and thinks its been wounded and tries to overcompensate in healing making us sweat a lot.

I am not sure if l am right or not but l got the night sweats through both my thr's and up to quite recently. I am hoping they havd stopped now hopefully thats them done.

Soos your son is doing that much at the moment with his presentation and travelling about and the possibility of the other hip needing replaced l am not supried he has the night sweats..

I had them a couple of weeks ago and l am 13 weeks post op.

Hi Laura - I'm so sorry this has happened to you, too. Not sure if son has had them at night. I only observed the time after he was trying on jeans (that would be stressful for me too!) then walked the length of the mall. Now we sort of know what triggers the waterfall sweating, but it's harder to avoid them.

Laura, I hope you had a good day & get some sound sleep!

      Aloha, Soos
