Lichen sclerosis flare up

hi I've had LS for many years and treat it with dermovate as recommended by a dermatologist who has studied the condition extensively. All has been reasonable other than some fusing although sex has been a no go area as my vagina seems to have shrunk since the menopause  and sex would be impossible now.  Recently I have had a lot of discomfort intermittent pain in my clitoris burning and dryness in and around my uretha. I've been using my cream but it seems to be making things worse itchy and uncomfortable. I've noticed that my clitoris has suddenly disappeared!  I'm under my GP who gave me some other steroid/antibiotic cream but this hasn't helped at all. Has my clitoris gone for good or can I retrieve it?  Don't think my GP understands the condition at all

I had been having flare ups for over a year but put off seeing a doctor until 6 months later had referrals and finally after biopsies was told last week by a ganaecologis that it was LS .i wasn't given any information about it just told to carry on with Dermovate I said that i had a flare up and was told to use it daily for 2 weeks and the emollient as often as I liked and then twice weekly, no other information given verbal or in written form just see you in 3 months  if I hadn't found this forum I would be completely in the dark about what to expect  so thank you for helping me understand it a lot more

I'm new to this site but I would just like to say thank you so much. its good to know that we are not alone to fight this problem. i will now go and try bicarbonate of soda. i have been using Emuaide which has helped and also sudacream. both have eased the pain.  but now the clitoris is swollen and sore so here i go.  Thanks joyce

will keep trying and if i find anything that helps will let you know. i am also Paleo, and all the rest that goes with it.

And when the clitoris keeps being swollen, I sometimes use a tiny amount of apple cider vinegar in my spray bottle.  It is the opposite of baking soda when you think of it.  And I don't use it very long, till all feels better.  Then I go back to baking soda in the Perin bottle.

Can I just see if anyone else has had these symptoms as to be honest I don't think I've been too troubled by symptoms for a few years. Whenever I got a bit of irritation I jus dutifully popped on my dermovate and things settled down. I haven't had the terrible splitting of skin I used to get for years. Although reasonably trouble free the nasty changes as outlined previously have been going on quietly. The fusing, lack of elasticity etc I assumed were part and parcel of the menopause making things dry up and for want of a better word shrivel up. However about a month ago I was getting a mild ache on the left side of my clitoris which came and went particularly when peeing. Also sort of burning soreness around about my uretha and that horrible intermittent tickly itch near the clitoris. All these symptoms come and go some days are worse than others. There are no obvious patches it's just irritation, itch and an occasional ache. I've had my urine checked that was clear so a UTI not the culprit also blood tests which were fine. I've been to my GP twice and as mentioned am going back to Dermatologist tomorrow. Just weird that I've suddenly got all this going on. I doidnt even know that my clitoris had completely fused until I had a look in the mirror so not sure exactly when that happened. When I went to the dermatologist in November she again mentioned I'd fused so maybe it's been like that a while but I didn't realise?  It's only this recent catalogue of symptoms and irritation that have made me look in the mirror as its not a pretty site lots of pigmentation and generally not nice so I avoid it. Just wondered if anyone else had had these symptoms all together?

Joyce, the clitoris area has given me the most peculiar kind of problems. At present all is well, but that can change quickly.  It has caused urinary tract infections in the past.  But now I know how to stop matters from getting worse.  The clitoris is so close to the urethra, that the irritation  is able to affect the urethra as well, which is what I experienced. Hence the temporary application of apple cider vinegar in that area.  As a result I do no longer end up taking anti biotics for a blatter issue.

Hanny, could you please tell us a bit more about apple cider vinegar and how and why you use it or forward a link. Many thanks.

It was a simple thought.  The urethra likes a different balance than the LS.  Apple cider is accid and baking soda is alkaline.

Later I discovered that there apparently was a doctor in the 1920's who figured this out. And that the right pH balance had a lot to do with one's health.

Why this knowledge was not considered in later years I don't know.

Perhaps it is understood also that I stick to certain foods, and leave other or take a smaller amount.

No never heard of it, dermovate ointment seems to be best thing see if they'll give you that. I was given loads of things but only this worked. It's strong but you need something powerful. I had to go to a dermatologist to get best advice gp's aren't very clued up on LS for some reason.

Some GPs are great, some are not.  I found the Dermatology department dreadful where I am.

Glad to hear that Hanny. Do you still using Clob as maintenance at the moment ?

Glad to hear that the baking soda helps with the fusing.

      Hi Phong,

I still use the tiniest amount of Clob, about once a week.

      Thanks Hanny.

I forgot to ask you that, in terms of improvement, did you see the LS white patches disappear after a period using Clob ?

And at the moment, is there any white patches left ? or the skin color has become pink as normal ?

It's great to hear from you smile

I did not see the white patches disappear while only using Clob.  The difference came when I started doing baking soda baths every other day (one cup) and baking soda rinses (three pinches in a Perin botle)  Plus my strict diet avoiding sugar, alcohol, gluten and most dairy products.  And on top of that doing dilation every other day, plus hormone replacemet.

I believe it was, and still is, the whole package I mentioned here that made the difference.
