Light Jogging / Running after THR...

Posted , 13 users are following.

Hiya Guys...

Maybe a daft question, but wanted to ask if anyone has, or knows of anyone who has managed light jogging / running after a THR. I’m guessing this is probably a non starter, but thought I’d ask anyway....

I know we are all different etc but just thought I’d ask....

Many thanks in advance for your posts and advice...

PJ

I often think about jogging, but feel it's not an option right now (nearly 5 months post-op). I guess I could in an emergency. I'd like to hear from a jogger, too...

Hi PJ, I had to run 100m to the car in a rain storm, now that was the first time I had ran in nearly 4yrs, I am now 7 months post op on both sides, and feel confident to trot along, but not too far, I am trying to learn to do Ballroom Dancing, after many years of Martial Arts training, ( I think they drugged me in Hospital last summer...) I find a prolonge Jive just too much but I can waltz and Tango for quite a while.  eek arrow exclaim

      How is Sandy doing?

We had a "joint bootcamp" and the surgeon said no more jogging... He said it affected the life of the hip. I just want to dance again!!!

Hi I am having bilateral hip replacements and the surgeon told me I should never run or jog again as the constant jarring will damage my new hips.  He said I could do it but the replacements wouldn't last so long.  Not sure if this is aapplicable to single hips,

Hi there. I think it's something of a personal choice... it's almost certainly true that running impacts the longevity of our replacements, but there are plenty of people who choose to return to pretty full on sporting activity, including running, in order to live life to the fullest now. Who knows what the future holds - either in terms of our own health, but also in terms of technological advancements that may advance revision technology. My choice is to try to return to all of the sporting activities I'd started to leave behind as my arthritis got worse. That being said, I'm not a runner!!! But I know several people who've had THR's who are now running marathons. Good luck with your choice (and recovery!) - and make sure you enjoy life post op to the fullest. It's a real gift to be able to have it :-)

I did a very fast walk the other dayto catch a train home .....

and managed to get it too. biggrin

I think until I know the outcome of my next hospital visit to look at my wonky replacement hip, I'll keep it to fast walking.

I'd love to think I could go back to running. Was always an avid, if slow, runner

I apologize in advance if you already mentioned it and I didn't see it ....

    Take care

    Hiya!

I too am interested in replies to this. I packed in tennis last summer due to "muscle pain". It was only when I had an X-ray in October that I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, not too bad but has worsened rapidly and I am due a LTHR in the next 6 weeks. Yikes!

Was Skiing at Xmas. Can I ask if any one has managed to get back to Skiing?  Don't think I will risk jogging unless running for a bus. Once I have this done I want it to last as long as possible!

i am a competent careful Skier!

My surgeon said going back to skiing would be fine, although advised avoiding black runs/moguls etc. Of course there's a risk associated with it - but there are risks all around us regardless :-) I'm certainly hoping to get back to it - to make the very most of the amazing opportunity a THR gives us. Good luck with the op and best wishes for a speedy recovery...

Hi I too will be going back tp skiing but as my surgery was early Feb this year it will be almost a year before I get back to it.  I was a careful skier in any case so would be stiking to blues and reds.  I have tried a bit of a jog (to catch a bus) and couldnt really do it.  I was not a runner anyway but am a keen cyclist and swimmer.  Going to be doing all of these things.

      Thank you,

You sound like you are doing really well.  I was Skiing at Xmas and found that skiing was easier than walking!  I would walk down to the lift in light shoes carrying ski boots and then lovely husband would help me get my boots on!  I could then carry my shoes in a little back pack. Next time we will definitely go ski in ski out to minimise walking in Ski boots. Hoping to have THR in June, So Xmas Skiing will be my challenge. Can always stay on blues if we pick the right place. Thinking Avoriaz.

Avoriaz is lovely you will have a lovely time.  I was thinking for next year as I will be skiing more sedately I will choose accomodation with access to a hot tub or swimming pool. Can't wait! I am just back from Venice where I walked for miles each day and even got in and out of a gondola. I am definitely getting back to a full life that is why I chose to get the op.  My surgeon says a potentail revision in 20 years or so won't be too problematic as mine was cemented.

A positive attitude helps too.  You will do great.

Could I ask ..... Is Revision easier then if the joint is cemented rather than uncemented?  Just thinking ahead!
