Likelihood of second hip replacement

Since I've been reading this forum, I'm struck by the number of people who have had, or are going to have, both hips replaced. This was a revelation to me. When I had my diagnostic x-ray, I was told that my good hip (my right) was 'unremarkable', which sounds good to me. However, I'm wondering how likely it is to have a second arthritic hip. My GP told me that there is an 80% likelihood of having problems with the second hip. Has anyone any insights, or information, to share on this one?

When did you have your hip done and what did thexray show for the first, the xrays on both my hips showed that my hips were severe arthritis the consultant said it was bone on bone also you could go years without any trouble on your good hip it must be in very good condition how iI envy you lol xx

Thanks Marilyn, I've not had my hip done yet. The x ray was done last September, with a follow up in March which showed a complete lack of cartilage on the left, but the right looked fine, and remains fine. It seems from your experience that I may yet be lucky with the good one.

HI, I had my Dr. x-ray my right hip and he said it shows no arthritis, so I hope I can keep my good hip for a long time. I do notice that the replacement hip is stronger and that my right leg aches when I over do it.

Thanks Cathie. I've no symptoms at all from the good hip, so I hope I may have more in common with your husband than with you. Was your second done two weeks after the first, or two weeks ago?

It will be in two weeks, Monday,

5 th October to be exact. Same surgeon same hospital.

i am very ready to have it done, but very nervous.

Strangely enough it was my 'good' hip that gave way first,

      not my weaker one!

Sorry, Cathie, I misread your comment. Good luck with the operation. I'll be following you on Wednesday 7 October.

    Hi Angela

i have been told it is unusual to have to have both hips done. But having seen on here how many ( me included ) are going through this I don't feel it is as unusual as I was led to believe.

saying that though if one hip is good and the other has to be replaced I would say  that having two done was less lightly unless you were quite young when you had the first one done. I was actually born with my problem and my surgeon said it could have happened at any age. I was just lucky to last this long.

    dear Angela,

    This is my "story" -

Xray taken of hips in January 2014 showed severe osteoarthiritis in right hip, but not bone-on-bone - I lived in Los Angeles at that time - circumstances made me move to Holland -

X-ray taken September 2014 showed bone-on-bone of right hip and made me an excellent candidate for THR - left hip mild OA -being in denial and afraid, I waited (do not recommend this) and R THR done March 16, 2015 --- initially doing real good, then groin pain which led me to this forum ....

Follow up 6 weeks visit with surgeon, another xray was taken - surgery succesfull, left hip no cartilage and bone on bone ----

I was devastated !!!! How could this be ????? within such a short time????

I thought that I was an exception .... not so, darling - low and behold, many of my fellow hippies here were having the same issue and now you find us posting our progress after 2nd THR ... cool huh? cool

There was no explanation from surgeon except that he said: your hips are the same age .... at that time, my sense of humor was shot - not funny ....

be easy on your self - getting stronger every day with every step and try not to worry about it right now ... first hip first

    warmest biggest hug

      Dear Renee,

Thank you for sharing your story. There are definitely a lot of you out there on the second THR. I was struck in my own case by how rapid the deterioration has been since I was referred for surgery, so am not surprised by your comment about 'how can this be?'. I''m not worrying about the other hip right now, just curious.

I hope that you are feeling the improvement this week after your surgery.
