Likelihood of second hip replacement

Since I've been reading this forum, I'm struck by the number of people who have had, or are going to have, both hips replaced. This was a revelation to me. When I had my diagnostic x-ray, I was told that my good hip (my right) was 'unremarkable', which sounds good to me. However, I'm wondering how likely it is to have a second arthritic hip. My GP told me that there is an 80% likelihood of having problems with the second hip. Has anyone any insights, or information, to share on this one?

    Hi Angela,

I noticed in 2008 something was wrong. I had lost flexibility which I noticed when (dare I say it) I was getting quite energetic with my fiancé at that time. I found that certain positions left me walking like John Wayne for days and was extremely uncomfortable. Doc sent me for physio thinking all I had to do was regain my flexibility. The physio nearly killed me so I went back to GP who sent me for an X-ray confirming the left hip needed doing. Total lack of faith in the hospital that was supposed to do my op saw me taking painkillers for the next 6 years (also because of sciatica).

I had surgery for the sciatica in August 2013 and thought that would help with my stance as I walked very stooped. After about 9 months I wasn't improving so self referred for physio at the hospital where I work. After about 3 sessions the physio told me there was nothing wrong with my back, it had healed perfectly . The stoop was coming from my hips. My GP referred me to orthopaedics who right away said my hips were both bone on bone and the left was near collapse. He wanted to operate straight away but I asked to wait until after Xmas and my 50th birthday in January this year so I had the left one done in February and the right one 4 weeks ago as you know.

Thats my story thus far. I have OA in the family and was told that it will spread to my knees, elbows, wrists etc so I'm going to make the best of life when this is healed before I need something else replaced. I'm going to have more spare parts than a second hand car before I'm finished lol.

    Take care.

    Ali xx
