Live from hospital bed after partial knee replacement!

Hi everyone. Well today I went down for surgery at 8.30. Didn't know until surgeon opened me up to see if would be total or a partial. I'm only 46 so was really hoping for just the patella femoral replacement. Luckily he was able to do this.
I have had quite a few surgeries over the year and I have to say this is the best I've ever felt
Anathestist was uncertain whether I could have spinal due to back surgery, but says he would try. He was able to, since had this asking with a full general anaesthetic. Apart from taking forever to come round. Didn't get back to room until 3. All has been really good. No pain at all. Legs feeling dead was weird (wet muss twice!). Feeling back now and I've been given painkillers.
Haven't been out of bed today but will tomorrow.
Thank you for all your support beforehand. I was a nervous wreck this morning and had a good cry, but feel great right now. I know there will probably me more pain tomorrow but for now I'm so happy I'm pain free! X

So glad it all went well Debs & that you only had to have a partial.
Now the hard work starts! You'll soon be back on your feet.
I wish you well

Thank you so much everyone. Yesterday (day 2) was not good. Had no sleep and was so tired and in a lot of pain. Although did do week with physio and walked with crutches. Had horrible experience in afternoon for out to the loo, nurses weren't very helpful. Got up and get dreadfully sick and so hot managed to press bell for nurse just before fainting. Felt dreadful after that. All day I just kept crying. But my amazing husband got me through it and was more helpful that nurses when I had to get out to loo again. Its 5.30am but I did get some sleep and pain bearable right now. Hoping to get home tomorrow. Thinks it's going to be a long road ahead. Thank you to everyone on here, you help so much. Best wishes to you all. X

My day 2 was pretty awful too Debs except my care was amazing...I too was really sick from the morphine but the carer was kindness itself and the nurse was amazing in the evening when I hit the pain wall, having vomited up my meds again. My pain meds are now just making me nauseated ,which I can cope with. Day 3 was better, managed physio well and bend around 70%. Today I showered myself sitting, am walking on two sticks ,bend up to 80% plus, and physio went well. Iceing now after physio. That seems very early to be discharged, are you ready? Your husband sounds great....keep it up, and I'll be thinking of you ..i know this journey is tough but already I feel positive that this is the right thing for
me to have done...thanks to everyone on here for the support

Wow you are doing so well. Well done.
I have walked in corridor and did 3 stairs. Done loads of bending exercises. Pain better today and nurses much nicer today.
They want me to stay until Sunday which bit disappointing. Just want to get home.
Are you really tired. I'm exhausted! X

So sorry to hear how bad you've been feeling!
I was sick as a dog on iv morphine after 1st TKR. I refused iv morphine for the 2nd & was given 1 dose of Oromorph at night for the pain. At least I slept when I could! I was discharged on day 2 this time. I can tolerate Oromorph but not iv morphine!
I hope the you are feeling better by now. You seem to be getting on really really well now.
Hospital is hard, even in your own room! It's still noisy & lights on in the corridor all night. I had a room near the nurses station so could hear them talking, the phone ringing etc, as they don't let you shut the door to your room! There is always someone checking & then there were the obs that went on through the night. Arm out out, blood pressure, pulse etc. "Do you need any more pain relief?" Hard to relax, let alone sleep! After being woken was when the pain would start! Having said that the nurses were all lovely, the care was first class! I defo cannot complain. Lovely to have a single room with en suite again! Much better than me disturbing someone else on my nocturnal visits to the loo!!
When you do go home take it very easy & don't push yourself too soon! Recover a bit more of your energy first, you will be very tired for quite a while, that's absolutely normal, just go with it, when you need to, nap!
Do your exercises, ice & elevate between naps. Keep yourself warm & hydrated!
As I had my op at the height of cold & flu season I started taking echinacea for the immune system & milk thistle for the liver (painkillers!) before the op. Just finishing them now!!
When you are fully back on your feet again you will be so very glad you did this, you may not think it now but you will.

Awwww thank you so much. It's lovely chatting to someone going through the same thing.
I've had great news. I can go home this afternoon. Physio so pleased with walking and stairs and I'm almost at a 90 degree bend. Feel so much better.
Had a shower independently which was fabulous. But wow, I'm shattered after that
Stoped morphine yesterday. On codiene, paracetamol and ibuprofen. Slept so well last night. Was on lovely sleep when they came in our lights on and said time to wake up at 6am!! Be lovely to be on own bed and wake up when I want.
Pain is only mild and I've not had painkillers since first thing. Feeling very determined and positive.
Physio warned me there would be good days and bad, but apart from day after op it's been so much better than I thought it would be.
Now you take care. Don't do too much. Listen to your body and ask for help (says me who is very stubborn and never asks for help!!)
Please keep me updated with how you are doing.
We can do this......go us!!!!

Well done. Sounds like you are doing really well. Just try and rest as much as you can. I think it's the codiene they have switched me to. I had it an hour ago and now so drowsy. Maybe when home I can just keep those for bedtime.
Take care and us know how you doing. X

Glad you are home now Debs. You are doing really well.
I can relate to not necessarily take the advice! I'm the same!! But we will however get there.
I am further along the road to recovery but still have blue days & the tiredness, I'm sure you understand.
Good luck on your way to full recovery.
Keep in touch

Hi Linda, I was 7 weeks on Saturday. Still get some pain but not so much now. Sleeping well but still can't get really comfortable as I'm a side sleeper & no matter what I do I get pain in one knee or the other! Still I do get to sleep so mustn't complain. I dreamt last night I'd broken my leg & woke with my knee in pain!! I still take CoCodamol for the pain but cutting down now.
I hope all goes well for your return home. You will have good & bad days but you will get there. You are doing really well, keep it up.
We will always be here should you need us.
Speak soo
