Long term, unexplained chest pain

Hi all
After struggling with docs for years over this I thought I would turn to the wider world some input. I am a 27 year old, healthy (enough) male who has been getting intermitment, iregular and infrequent chest pains on and off for around 10 years.
During an 'attack' the pain can be quite severe and sharp - I guess a bit like being stabbed. The pain is localised to the left side of my sternum and feels fairly deep (i.e. it cannot be palpated).
Attacks can last anywhere from a few seconds to a day or so, and tend to come in 'clusters' that can be present for up to a week. There can be months between each cluster of attacks (if you get my drift!).
Pain can sometimes be exacerbated when leaning forward, coughing, lying on my side or raising an arm (seems to always vary - and can sometimes not have any stimulators).
During a 'cluster' period and between attacks I can often feel a mild, underlying ache in my chest. This is easy enough to ignore however.
I have had ECGs and chest xrays that have all been fine, and am not affected at all during exercise - I can happily go out and run 10k with ease.
Doctors have in the past rulled out gastro refulx as there was no tenderness on palpation of my stomach area, although I have sometimes thought that attack can follow a big meal and be accompnied by burping (although this may be my mind tricking me).
Muscolskeletal problems have been mentioned, but why would attacks come in clusters and seemingly out of the blue?
I am at a compltete loss and doctors have been no help. My wife is scared that I will just drop dead from a heart attack - and I am struggling to find new ways of reassuring her.
Any help/thoughts/insight/advice would be seriously welcome!
Thanks

I'm 22 and currently awake at 4am because of this chest pain. It's also on my left side and comes on and off but it's worse than it's ever been tonight. I've had a cough for over a month now that could be straining to my chest aswel. I'm not sure why to do about the pain it's been pretty consistent for a while now

Considering your pain wasn't life threatening and ur still alive (hence, ur post was 3 years ago) this is what I believe.
Your diet.... Stay with me here. I too had similar pain; as if a rib was stabbing me in the lung.... My Aunt (retired Nurse Lt. Col. Army) told me it sounded like a kink in my intestines and that the moving around subsided the pain cuz it assisted with pushing it around the corner, or kink.
So, is ur poop soft or hard... Don't tell me but check it out.

Hey ji86,
I too am having the same issues as the others on this discussion. Mysterious chest pains mostly stemming from a constant dull irratation on my lower left side of my rib cage. Its been going on for almost 6 months now and still no answers, doctors can't seem to figure it out. ive had blood work, chest xray, blood pressure, my vitals were checked, massage therapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture, and nothing has helped yet. Im stressed, miserable, and my daily life has taken a massive hit. Please anyone help me to figure this out. I am a fit healthy 27 year old guy.

I really thought it was anxiety and stress causing my symptoms but since last post I have been back to a&e three times with chest pains headaches sickness and a feeling of unwellness same answer again nothing to do with major organs but something deffo going on I have now refused to take any of the tablets my doctors have prescribed me which over a two year period since this all started was a lot and I feel if docs don't know what's wrong how do they know what meds to give ? I'm booked in to see a physiatrist tomorrow that deals with medical depression so hopfully can get some insight into wether it is anxiety or medical as she is a professor in this field so fingers crossed .

I have a lot of chest tightnings that start in centre of chest then spreads around back that's when pain hits it can happen at anytime but never when I am standing or active as soon as all that starts I'm immediately sick and that can last for two hours or more and I feel really unwell like I'm going to pass out sometimes I take gaviscon and that will clear it up quite quickly and other times it's so so bad I end up in a&e like I have said in previous post when I get to a&e heart rate and pulse is up so I'm immediately taken for ecg get bloods done which first round always come back with signs of infection low anti inflammatory count high white blood count and low oxegen second round of bloods come back all clear they have noticed that even up to four hours of initial heart and pulse being up they are both still high even when I'm no longer in pain as by then I would have had pain killers or morphine always have chest X-ray that also comes back clear

The chest pain was the reason I started going to docs in first place it came out of nowhere and out of all my symptoms is the one that has always been there even after two years even though I have new symptoms like stomach and head problems which we're probably caused by medication over use it's my chest area that gives me the most trouble the last test I'm waiting for at the moment is my eshophgus as they think there might be a thinning of the tube and that's what's causing all the pain

I have something similar wirth the difference that mine doesn't move all over the place. Most always on the l;eft side with the odd occasion it migrates to the right side of the sternum. 98% of the time it is to the left. My family has so much lung cancer on my dad's side (dad, 2 uncles and grandfather). All fairly heavy smokers in their younger years. I am not. So I brought it to the attention of my doctor. X-rays, ECG, blood tests all showed nothing so she suggested that it was cosotchondritis. Deep inhalations is when I feel it the most. I am quite active in a racquet sport and like to ride my bike so there is a lot of movement and exertion. I was still a little fearful of it being lung cancer and got my doctor to set me up with a respiratory specialist and went through pulminary function testing and more blood tests. She got me an appointment to have a cat scan done...mostly to give me some peace of mind. Long story, after doing some research on cat scans, and then getting another opinion from a different doctor about my "condition" I came to the conclusion that I would not have the cat scan done so as not to be blasted with much higher doses of radiation (a known cancer increaser). Especially considering all of the symptoms sounded like this cosotchondritis. I have had this pain in my left side for about 6 months now. Had it been cancer doctors say the signs would be much greatrer that just this chestpain. Mine hasn't gotten any worse ober that period of time...it's just not going away. So now, I just live with it and carry on with my life. I hope your condition has improved or at least not gotten worse.
