Losartin Potassium

Hi I would love to hear from any one who is on Losartin Potassium for High Blood Pressure. I am a very fit 56yr old who is working in a professional job that needs a clear head and plenty of energy. However after three years of constant anxiety I was diagnised as having high Blood Pressure following three weeks of serious nose bleeds, and was prescribed Amlodopine. This worked well on lowering my blood pressure but had such bad side effects that I finally persuaded my GP to stop them . I am now taking Losartin Potassium 25mg and where as the side effects are not as bad as with the Amlodopine ,I am still experienceing severe tiredness and feel muddled and confused at times. I have only been on them for a week now and have to go back to my GP in three weeks time, but even though I am back in work I am not functioning the way that I should be. I would appriciate it if I could hear from any one else who is on this medication because I have gone from a very active person to one who is struggling to get through the day . Thank you

I was told by my doctor taking losartum potassium before you go to sleep (whatever time that may be) is best.

My BP is always at its highest in the morning and taking Losartan at night does not lower it for then. It gradually comes down during the day as I get active.

My doctor's father takes his after his mid day meal and for him that aviods side effects.

That makes sense. My doctor told me to take it at night due to the sluggish feeling.

I was on Losartan for about four years till I realised it was that drug that made me feel so miserable and constantly going to look at night. There are 90 odd blood pressure drugs so ask to change if they don't suit you.

I only started taking 50mg  Losartin Potassium, two weeks ago after being on Rampril for years. Doctor said Losartin does not give you the cough but I am choking at times. Going back to him tomorro as I have put up with this cough for years and I really thought I was frr of it with the new medication. First week I was so tired but that is wearing off now

Stacy I've had further tests and the cough had nothing to do with the Losartan

Hi Stacy,  my doctor just put me on Losartan.  I am 76 years young and in good health although my blood pressure has been climbing (a few spikes in the 150's) and have a 50-60% blockage in my left artery.  Reading the side effects has me worried but she wants to see me in four weeks so I figure I can manage any side effects for that period of time - then make the final decision about staying on the drug.  I am a bit worried however because I see that all the posts here were posted over a year ago with no follow-up.  Anyone out there now on Losartin?

GrandmaFaye, yes I am on Losartan, started at 50mg a day 2 1/2 years ago, and now doubled up to 100mg after having stopped another pill (Doxazosin) which caused horrendous itching/scratching/bleeding 24 hours a day.  A skin biopsy pointed to one of the pills.  Still a little itchy after stopping Doxazsoin and doubling Losartan but nothing like before, so fingers crossed.

It might reassure you to hear that my pharmacist says that Losartan is the BP drug about which he hears the least complaints of side effects from his patients.

Yes, for most posters it was the drug with least side effects but we now have a surge of new posters having problems with it.

Cough is not a normal Losartan side effect. The usual side efect is being light headed until your system adjusts to it. What other meds are you taking ?

Thanks for the info Derek76...I am taking Cholesterol prescriptions (Atorvastatin 80 mg and Zetia Tabs 10 mg) along with Omerprazole for acid reflux.  So I count myself fortunate.  My late husband took at least 20 prescriptsions daily but he lived to 86.  I looked up possible conflicts but did not see any of my prescriptions listed.

The problem had with losartan was bp increased and creatinine rocketed and gfr went low. Was switched to amlodipine. ☺

If you are in the UK the Dr Scurr response to a patients question in  Tuesdays Daily Mail said that patients with partially blocked arteries can avoid surgery/stents if taking statins.

Has your blockage been inproved by them?

" the fact that you have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease before any damage has occurred is a relief, as you are now on protective medication.

I should explain that the two coronary arteries (and the smaller vessels branching off them) are the heart's only source of oxygenated blood.

So a blockage here (due to the build-up of fatty deposits, called atheroma or plaques) is very critical.

The danger is that it will deprive part of the heart muscle of blood — triggering a heart attack.

Your letter mentions 16 arteries being clogged — perhaps you mean 16 points of severe narrowing?

But wherever these are, you are now protected by the atorvastatin, which, along with the aspirin, helps prevent blood clots forming and blocking arteries completely.

If your cholesterol drops low enough, so that your LDL (low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as the 'bad' cholesterol) level is 2mmol/litre, the plaques of cholesterol are likely to reduce in size.

Your dose of atorvastatin may be increased to 40mg or higher in due course to achieve this.

For many patients, treatment with tablets will be sufficient, even if the plaques are widespread."

Hi I was on Losartan for a couple of years but realised I was feeling very low and depressed and was getting out to the loo more than usual. Changed it for doxasosin so fingers crossed but as it's meant also for men wiTh prostrate problems to increase flow, I am still getting out to the loo at night. I believe there are hundreds of BP drugs so it's important to find one that suits you individually. Our genes and make up are all different and pharmaceutical companies all know this. Good luck.

Where did you get the info that losartan increases urine flow ? I took it during the years that I had BPH and it certainly did not help in that way.

When first on the market it was said to help men with erection problems but now it is said to cause ED.

I had a terrible cough and assumed it was the tablet, but I had further tests and it was nothing to do with the Losartan

I was on it a short time. I am in the US and found out the manufacturer was in India and have had many suits for safety issues. I am suffering from possibly the worst known side effects and have told my doctor I am and will not take it. I am currently seeking out litigation against the manufacturer due to the crap I have been through. 3 surgeries to correct the issues of this poison.

I am posting simply because all those odd or rare side effects people also need to know about. They need to be aware of anything the medication can do to properly speak with their gp. I was not made aware of all of the side effects. One example stuttering with Percocet, 1 in 100,000 people have reported this. When I had my femur fractured they were giving me percocet, the pain doctor said to me over and over that the stuttering was from my concussion suffered in the same accident. They had a speech pathologist come see me in the hospital, she found out it was the percocet, once that was stopped the stuttering shortly stopped. Point is not all doctors know all of the side effects possible.
