Losartin Potassium

Hi I would love to hear from any one who is on Losartin Potassium for High Blood Pressure. I am a very fit 56yr old who is working in a professional job that needs a clear head and plenty of energy. However after three years of constant anxiety I was diagnised as having high Blood Pressure following three weeks of serious nose bleeds, and was prescribed Amlodopine. This worked well on lowering my blood pressure but had such bad side effects that I finally persuaded my GP to stop them . I am now taking Losartin Potassium 25mg and where as the side effects are not as bad as with the Amlodopine ,I am still experienceing severe tiredness and feel muddled and confused at times. I have only been on them for a week now and have to go back to my GP in three weeks time, but even though I am back in work I am not functioning the way that I should be. I would appriciate it if I could hear from any one else who is on this medication because I have gone from a very active person to one who is struggling to get through the day . Thank you

Phillip, I've just had a skin biopsy due to very severe itching day and night to the point of scratching and drawing blood and bruising. I take Losartan and Doxazosin and the skin biopsy pointed to one of those drugs. Losartan was felt to be the most likely one by the dermatologist but I had been on it quite happily for over 2 1/2 years, with the Doxazosin only being added 6 months ago, following which the itching started and continued building. The resident pharmacist at my surgery considered that the Doxazosin had triggered the itching side effect in the Losartan. The Doxazosin was stopped and within two weeks I was able to stop taking the prescription antihistamines. However, I have now been advised by my renal consultant to double the dose of the Losartan and the itching has slightly returned but nothing I can't cope with at the moment as long as it doesn't get any worse.
?As far as your raised creatinine is concerned, that is more likely to be a side effect of the Losartan rather than your kidney function - according to my renal consultant any itching due to low kidney function doesn't usually occur until CKD stage 4-ish. I had normal creatinine until being put on a couple of the BP pills and when the creatine rose, the consultant said that they expect to see that in the case of some BP pills. I am also CKD3 with a gradually reducing eGFR (last reading 39, increased from 37) and only a sole kidney.

I was prescribed Losartin 50 mg, because my BP was high, little did I remember I have been taking clonazepam for over a year now due to anxiety. Losartin has some very nasty side effects, and I am apparently one to get them all. I started taking it two days ago thinking because I currently have a kidney stone, it couldn't have been the losartin that was giving me the issues I was feeling. Sure enough I am bleeding like a stuck pig when I pee. There are so many other natural ways to bring down BP if the issue your body is having is potassium absorption. I found out I was actually detoxing from my clonazepam sending my BP through the roof. I am no longer going to take this medication because it is not right for me, and does not work correctly on me. Remember the kidney's are one of the biggest controllers of your blood pressure, the adrenal glands among others play a huge role in blood pressure regulation, so if the medication you are taking messes up your kidneys or causes issues with your kidneys it's probably better you speak to a dietician, or someone else about getting your numbers lower.

OMG ! I have been taking same med for 2 years ! Doc increased from 25 to 50 mg, about 5 mos. ago. I'm constantly tired. Everything is an effort. My nose is runny all the time. Cold symptom. I cannot sleep. Up on and off all night. I went to pain clinic because my legs hurt. My back pain is horrible. Went to allergist for runny nose. Now taking meds for nose ,shots and pain meds for legs and back ! I feel insecure walking, afraid I'm going to fall. My life has been Hell for 2 years. Just read your comment and cannot believe that my Hell is or can be caused by Larsatin potassium. I figured I was aging and this is what happens. Stacy I like you was very active, strong always going. Now I sit, Afraid to go anywhere. Tired all the time Pain... OMG.. I am going to make appointment and get blood pressure meds changed. I can't believe this.. all this time I blemed aging. 2years !!!

Jude, that's interesting as I'm debating whether to ask the doc to take me off losartan. They don't seem to care about the side effects - severe fatigue, etc - so long as the BP stays low. Have been on 100 mg with worsening fatigue, and little or no effect on my BP. Time to visit a different dr at the surgery to see if I can change to something else.

I've been having the same experience; I stopped taking it just today. I think since I made some changes I may not need it now & it may be lowering if TOO much. I've been eating really healthy & low sodium and I clean houses for work so I'm definitely getting the excercise. Also I get Reiki at least 1X month, use essential oils inba difuser in my bedroom & wear a crystal pendant to reduce stress. I think it's working - gonna go to doc 2 weeks from now & get it checked. I feel like I got it down.

Hi Stacy long-acting amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker) and a thiazide diuretic (water pill) is generally well received and strongly supported as the treatment of choice. But as we all know too well, our Maker did not make anyone of us alike. What works for me in all probability may not work for you. I sympathise with you on what your going thru'. Yes I too am on losartan potassium 100mg and to say the least, I had a very bad time. Losartan takes 3-6wks to take effect, I am now on my 5th.wk. In a week's time the doc intends to add HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide 25mg) to the brew. The thing is losartan is short acting and your dosage may not be sufficient (I started with 50mg). I was working in a very stressful environment in IT during graveyard shifts for 10 years and developed GAD (generalised anxiety disorder). By the 8th. wk he (doc) will top it up with a low dose of a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) essentially a serotonin antagonist specifically for anxiety. the serotonin antagonist will also help to lower bp. Before treatment, my bp was 184. I am 64, male, asian. Please work closely with your doc, I only share what I am going thru' and my doc's prognosis for me. Please forgive my rather disjointed english as it is not my native tongue. Thank you.
YMMV

as ARBs and ACEs can affect your kidneys. I am interested if the Amlodipine gave you an irregular heart beat or palpitations?

Itching is quite a common side effect evidently comes from Losartan's effect on the liver

Charlette, As Derek has said, itching can be a side effect of Losartan. I am ok on Losartan 5mg..........as long as I don't add anything else to it. Two years ago, the consultant added Doxazosin, and after itching and scratching to the point of drawing blood, a dermatologist diagnosed allergic reaction to one of the BP meds following a skin biopsy. Stopped the Doxazosin and the allergy disappeared. However, just recently, my eye pressure went off the screen and my ophthalmologist changed my eye drops - I'm now itching and scratching again all over. I guess the Losartan and the the Lumigan eye drops are not compatible for me! But then I'm not a good example as I have had nasty side effects from so many drugs!

I'm not taking Losartan now but I have had all sorts of itches and skin problems recently including Folliculitis that took seven months to clear up. The worst drug induced rash I've had was from Lisinopril.

I'm still itching and I'm suspecting the new eye drops so will text my eye consultant tomorrow and see if he can change them - they're not successfully bringing the pressure down anyway. Kidney consultant found my BP very high today - I didn't wish to try yet a different medication when the previous 7 have all caused so many problems so he decided to see me what the result is in 4 months time and then discuss another pill!

Are the eye drops for glaucoma? I don't have glaucoma but they seem to keep on testing my wife and myself for it because of our age group. It took me over a year to convince them that dry eyes were not my only problem and that it was Posterior capsule opacification (PCO after my cataract operation.A brief laser session and all was back to normal on my right eye but I think it is starting on my left eye now.
