loud roaring vibration sound in ear and hearing distortion

Hi,

Has anyone experienced a loud roaring low frequency noise in ear with hearing distortion.  I woke up one morning in December of 2015 and felt like there was a gong in my head all sound was vibrating. I felt like I was in the front seat of a car driving down the highway with the back windows open halfway.  I went to doctor and found I had lost some low frequency hearing in right ear.  I was Put on steroids for two weeks.  Got hearing back but left with this loud tuning fork/motor engine sound in my right ear and random hearing distortion in both ears.  I am very sensitive to low-frequency sounds and any kind of motors, airplanes and low voices just don't sound clear.  The motor engine stops when I speak and returns after my last word.  When someone speaks to me loud enough the motor engine will stop also and than return upon their last word.  Sometime sound drives the motor engine into the other  ear and I feel a fluttering/vibration/rumbling sound in the left ear.  If I shake my head back and forth quicky the noise will stop for a second wihile doing it.

Had so many tests and scans that don't show anything wrong.  My hearing test are normal now.  It is driving me insane.  Can't eat or concentrate. Severe anxiety.  Went to audiologist and see if I could have it masked but it is to loud.  I can't believe I can still hear over this noise and distortion that is going on in my head. Some days are better than others and I think I may be getting better but it gets worse again.  I have no dizziness at all.  Some doctors told me menieres disease or virus.  I can't stand it anymore.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Donna, how does your voice sound? Is it normal or echoey? Is your breathing loud or fairly normal? Can you change your noises by opening your mouth/ moving your jaw from side to side open and closed? Have you seen a specialist about TMJ? A client told me that chiropractors were originally trained to treat tinnitus only. Not sure if that is true but I would seach around for a chiropractor that treats tinnitus. Even if you don't live near them you could write to them so that they can direct a chiropractor near you to treat you. There is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy TRT that you can read about and see if anyone offers this near you. It is fairly expensive but has had some great results. Cognitive therapy could help you change the way you think about your tinnitus which brings relief in itself. You could talk to your GP to see if there is medication that can calm your tinnitus. Having worked with people that have suffered devastating tinnitus, I have found that over time it either gets quieter, sometimes goes but almost always becomes more bareable. Hang in there!!! xxx

Thank you for replying but it's been almost 3 months.  It's very frightening to think this roaring and distortion will not go away.  I am trying to stay postive and taking anti- anxiety meds that do help somewhat with the horrible anxiety this provokes.  I was not  sick at all and was not expose to loud music or noise.  i hope you will feel better.

Hi, I woke up last week (Feb 17th) and could not hear out of my left ear & ony partial in my right ear. I know I had a sinus infection, so I called my

Doctor, who got me right in. Double ear inf. & sinus inf. She put me on

an antibiotc I f I don't feel better to come back in on Friday. I went back,

she said ears are both clear. I told her I can't hear. Set up appt to ENT.

Went Thursday, he also said everything is clear. Might just be a virus so

sent me to the hearing center. Deaf in left ear & partial in right. This is

very scary!! Hearing center said I only have 30% chance of getting my

hearing back. High does of steroids 7 nose spray. I go back in two

weeks. I can not stand it either. I just have constant humming in deaf

ear & very sensitive in right.

Hi Lisa what is the cause? Diagnosis? Did you have any scans or tests? I got my hearing back after steroids for two weeks and nose spray but sound is distorted and loud motor sound in one ear. I am still going to Doctors searching for help. I know have horrible this is and the anxiety is making it worse. Talk to your doctor about getting help for anxiety. Search out more opinions. I was told to keep a low salt diet if it is due to Ménière's disease. Have you ever had any trouble in the past with hearing? This happened to me 3 times over the last 35 years. It took 4 to 5 months before I got better but never made a full complete recovery but did get full hearing back. Are you dizzy? I hope you will fell better.

Very similar symptoms and MRI confirmed Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension or CSF leak.

    Hi Lisa,

The first time I got this I found out I was pregnant 1 month later from onset. (I lost the baby.)  It could have something to do with changing hormones.  If you have dizzyness with hearing loss it could also be due to menieres disease which causes flucuating hearing. Maybe it could be a combination of all. These things are so hard to figure out and it is so frustration and anxiety provoking.  I am on anxiety meds too. Hard to enjoy anything and feel alienated.  If I get anymore information as I see more doctors I will share with you.  I also took MRI and CTA of brain and neck but shows nothing. I am taking gingko which helps circulate blood which can help menieres disease.  Stress is a contributer as well. I hope you will get some relief.

    Hi Donna,

Oh I am so sorry!! I know about not wanting to go out the noice is so loud and I think some one is on my ass so I look around & know one is near

me & can not understand anything. I need to be aware of my surrounding because i almost got hit by a car hat was backing out because I cant

    hear!!

I go back to ENT March 10th. I will keep you posted also. Thanks. Were do you live? Can we get disability?

I am out of work right now due to a nasty Boss who just screams & yell at me & everone else even his Wife. So I told him I dont appreciate him

yelling at me or screaming I did nothing wrong. To be honest I am glad

he let me go. All the stress from him screaming at everyone I did not

want to go to work, was only there 4 months, which was long enough.

    Good luck.

I would imagine we could get disability but I am too sick to try right now as it is so difficult to concentrate.  Stress is not good for whatever sickness or disorder we have. I live in NY.  I wish you luck on your next visit to ENT.  There are also doctors that specialize in the ear and the brain.  May be something to look into.

Hi Donna and Lisa. Donna the distortion you talk about is common with Menieres disease as is sensitivity to certain sounds. Unfortunately I have never found an answer to improving the distortion. I fit hearing aids to people that have distortion and roaring tinnitus. A hearing aid can sometimes help bring sound into your ear so you don't notice the tinnitus as much but if your hearing is normal you may not find a hearing aid particularly helpful. There is nothing I have heard of that can improve the distortion. If it doesn't resolve within months of this happening, it doesn't usually resolve. I have searched for answers to this for my clients, but no success so far. If you need to, getting a second opinion about whether it is Menieres disease or something like it, can help for your peace of mind. My heart breaks for both of you. It is such a devastating thing to go through and so much worse when both ears are involved. Look for a support group for Menieres disease or sudden hearing loss. At the moment you will both be searching for a cure but if you don't find one, you will come to terms with what is happening to you. It is like any disease, it is devastating until you learn to live with it. You will definitely learn to cope whatever the outcome but the initial fear is all consuming. I hope I hear from both of you that there has been some improvement over the next few weeks or months. ENTs can't tell you much. They don't know what the cure is and have to wait and watch like the two of you have to do.

Lisa yours is what is called "sudden hearing loss" and is becoming far too common. I see people that have suffered this quite regularly.  I think it is often a virus and have noticed it occurs regularly after clients have flown somewhere or been sick. It is great that you have been put onto steroids so quickly. Sometimes sufferers don't feel unwell at all. If your hearing has completely gone in your worst ear, and steroids don't bring it back,  you will need to look at getting a cochlear implant. I know that is a devasting thought and at the moment you will be hoping for your hearing to come back. I hope you are one of the 30%. Am thinking of both of you. xxx

Olizzieo, thank you for suggestions and your compassion,   I will look for a support group and have a few more doctors I will visit. The anti-anxiety meds are the only think that helps at this point. It helps me to eat somethng.  I have lost so much weight and can't afford to lose anymore.  Can you have Menieres disease without having dizzyness?  I have no dizzyness.  My neurologist and one ENT said I don't have Menieres but can't figure out what it could be other than virus of some sort.  Some ENT say I so have Menieres. I had this 14 years ago for almost 5 months and it gradually went away and left some ringing and having to pop ears on an everyday basis to equalize pressure But definately tolerable.  I would never fly anymore in fear it would get worse. This is not a ringing but a low-frequency loud roaring sound along with distortion.  The roaring is lower in the morning before I start hearing sound and start talking.  Also when I talk the roaring stops and unpon my last word starts back up again.  When I shake my head back and forth the roaring also stop for a few seconds while shaking from  side to side.  When people talk to me loud enough the roaring also will stop but is sometime push into the other ear and cause vibration flutttering sound in that ear.  This is so weird and just horrible. Thank you again for responding.  No one else realizes what it is to live with this.  I have fought breast cancer with chemo and that was a piece of cake compared to the madness that is going on in my head.

      Sincerely, Donnna

Donna it is obviously a very difficult diagnosis. If I were you I would write all of this in an email or letter, make sure you give a detailed history, symptoms and what ENTs have said, then send it to 100 ENT's /Physicians/ neurologists around the country asking for help. You might be lucky enough for one or two of them to have come across this and be of some help. Menieres generally comes with vertigo but there are some clients I have seen who have been diagnosed as having "Menieres type" symptoms but not necessarily called Menieres. I know it is a living hell when you suffer with something that no one seems to be able to help you with and even worse when it affects communication. All you can do is keep asking until someone give you an answer you are satisfied with you. Postive energy and love to you Donna xxx

Thank you Olizzieo & Donna. I am getting worse. I feel like I still have a sinus infection. Headach is unberable. Lot of pressure in eyes, hears & burning nose. Yeasterday I was having neck &

back pains. Woke up @ 4:00 am with horrible headach, neck pain

wrists both ache, knees, ankles. I am about ready to have a nervous breakdown. Having a hard time with my vision also, swollen eyes & body. I am calling the Doct this morning to get in & have more tests done.

Donna, are you having a hard time sleeping as well? No energy?

I find myself crying alot due to the pain & discomfort. I can not

stand to be in public It drives me crazy & even though I take advil It just does not help untill I get away from everyone. I hope we

both get answers SOON. I will keep you posted after I get back

      from the Docs today.

Lisa that is just devastating!!!! It sounds like there is something else going on if it is affecting so many parts of your body. A physician is sometimes better than a doctor as they are usually consulted when a doctor can't work out what the problem is. Whatever you do, keep copies of all your test results and if you are not getting answers, keep changing doctors and specialists. It is not surprising that you are not sleeping but if you don't sleep well it makes everything more difficult to cope with and really affects your energy levels. If you can, get something to help you sleep. Everything is easier to cope with when you are not exausted and sleep deprived. I went through chronic/ post viral fatigue and no one diagnosed it even though it was quite obvious that this is what I had suffered after a shocking virus. The medical world can be very narrow minded so finding a doctor who is willing to help find an answer is very important for a cure and for peace of mind when you are feeling so vulnerable. If you are desperate, phone around to get into an ENT earlier or drop in to yours and explain that you need to be assessed urgently. If your emergency department has an ENT, that may be faster. I hope you have a good friend to support you xxxxx

Hi Lisa have you been tested for Lyme disease? I went to a dentist yesterday and he gave me a script for a longer lasting anxiety medication and is making me a plate to wear in my mouth to relax muscles but doubtful this is the root of problem but when you are desperate you try and you pay any amount to find answers. I am seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow as well and have two more ENT doctors lined up in March. I can sleep but I am taking Meds to help me. I would definitely try that and if you can't get into see doctor in the next few days go to emmegency room. You will get all the test there including brain scans I could not do MRI because of sound sensitivity but got the CAT of neck and brain. Noting was found. Get blood test for all viruses. Maybe talk to doctor about spinal tap but you definitely need to sleep and hydrate. Get some anti anxiety Meds right away would be my suggestion. It is really horrible and I feel what you are going through. I miss my life so much. I want so much to be normal and hear normally again. Prayers, Donna
