Low heart rate with propranolol

Hi, my doctor prescribed 10mg propranolol twice a day. My heart rate went down to 48. My resting heart rate is between 58 and 65 without propranolol. Has anyone else experienced this?

I am on 120mg ER bid (240/day) and have always had a heart rate that was in the 50s to at most 60 before propanalol.  I have been on this dose for years for migraines and blood pressure and my typical resting heart rate ranges from the low 40s to the low 50s.  During the night, it will usually run in the upper 30s to at most the low 40s.

I don't have any issues with irregular heartbeat, dizziness, etc.  I exercise regularly now (which I wasn't doing previously) and suspect my natural heart rate would be in the upper 40s to low or mid 50s nowadays were I not on propanalol.  Either way, I have never found the rate to be an issue.  I'm currently age 47.

Hope this helps allay any concerns.

I'll add that my BP is generally around 120/80 or a tad bit lower.  Before propanalol and exercise, it would run 130/90 to 140/90.

What does your heart rate go up to when you exercise?

Why did you start this med? Thank you!

I have horrible and constant skipping heart beats. It terrifies me and every day I feel like I will die. I have been to the ER many times becuase of this. One doc recently prescribed beta blockers (at the emerg hospital). However, of course I go an research these pills on the internet and find all kinds of horrible side effects. But my symptoms are horrible too...so, go figure...anyway, I still haven't taken the meds but I am close to trying them. My biggest concern, is that my resting heart rate is 60 bmp. I am scared to take the med and then find out my heart rate will be scarily slow....I'm a mess with all this. I am 61 in June, female, could stand to lose 20 lbs (which I am now working on). I can't even go to the gym becuase as soon as I start lifting weights, the palpitations and skipping beats terrify me! I heard that you gain weight on these drugs because your metabolism slows down...and once you start, you can't stop. I read about ablations and that is not going to happen since it actually kills part of your heart where they do the ablations...OMG...this is horrible. I'm trying to read right now and all I do is feel my pulse and add more freak out onto the already exsiting freak out....so scared...

      Hi Cathrine,

I used to have very frequent heart skipping a beat.   Sometimes my heart fluttered every fifteen seconds!    I also felt really irritable and had trouble focusing.   It's a long story how I found a solution and too long to write out, but what helped was taking thiamine (B1).   Specifically, a fat soluable version that is more easily absorbed for some people - "lipothiamine".   I take two of these tiny tablets a day and it fixed my skipping heart problem.

There are other vitamins and minerals that are associated with heart arrythmias like B12 for example, so you might explore some of those for yourself also.   Thiamine is the safest thing to try as there are no side effects and no upper limit.

I= was on bisoprolol for svt and skipped heartbeats, it made me feel terrible, but the missed heartbeats are terrible too, i,ve just come back from shopping and my heart feels as if its beating  out of my chest with the skips.  I,m 69 years old  and also am frightened of the side effects of the drug, its quality of life not quantity but i haven,t got  quality with this heart of mine, i,m afraid of collapsing and dying.  I go see a heart specialist in 4 weeks.

If you have been diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation it's best to take your meds as not doing so puts a person at risk of stroke. I'm on bisoperal and reduced it , under consultation with my GP, to reduce it to 2.5mg/day from 10mg/day. The higher dose caused nightmares and v low blood pressure/low heart beat ( for me). Hope this helps.

Im 19 quite fit, ride a bike everyday but smoke about 10/15 cigs a day, except from the past month and a half because I couldn't leave my house from anxiety. I take propranolol 40mg 2x a day and my resting heart rate is 60 when taking these. The doctors said my blood pressure was fine so I don't think it will affect mine that much. My breathing seems so slow like I'm not breathing at all, it's kind of weird but I think that's what it's supposed to do and keep a steady heart rate and because your heart rate is lower you need less oxygen intake for you body so that covers the breathing so slow. When I exercise it doesn't even feel like my heart rates going up at all and I feel like I'm still breathing so slow. I'm pretty sure propranolol is safe and it's supposed to make your heart rate like that, it makes you more relaxed, that's why they give it to people like me with anxiety.

I am so glad i found this. I have suffered from panic attacks for over 30 yeras. Had different tabs and the one i have been on for 7 years now has started to not work the same and make me ill. I was suffering terrible palpertations and not being able to breath. I have now been on propranolol for 5 weeks wich was 40mg morning and night. I was feeling much better but doc has now said to start reducing them very slowly as my heart rate at docs was 60. I was concerned this was to low but reading on here its fine, my blood presure was 130/89. I then started to worry as we do but now reading this i dont know why she would want to reduce it. I feel fine well i did till i seen her lol.

I have a app in one month to get a pacemaker because of the block there is a chance after stopping propanol the heart block could reverse and that is what I am praying for I don't know how long it takes don't get upset because propanol does slow heart rate but you do need to talk to your Dr to find out if your heart is beating too slowe.
