LPR and shortness of breath

Posted , 16 users are following.

My biggest symptom of LPR is shortness of breath, which is vocal chord dysfunction. It really showed up first and my other LPR symptoms have showed up after and been mild if they have been there at all.

The shortness of breath is enough of a symptom. I hate it more than I can express and it's given me massive anxiety.

Anyone else? I've been to a speech therapist. I've been to the ENT, had the camera down the nose and confirm acid damage. I've changed my diet and feeling mostly better when I'm strict on it and I'm taking supplements but it's very restrictive (I have a lot of trigger foods) and I can't live like this. I really can't. I've only had this for 2 months.

Is this life long or can this be fixed?

    Hello Emily,

I have the same thing, I am breathless all the time, can hardly do anything, especially when i bend down.

I am struggling for breath most of the time, and fell that I cant do much at all now, so very depressing, and loss of quality of life, have no energy.

However I have had Gerd so bad, sometimes i lose my voice, and my throat vets so sore, but now am not eating past 6pm, and taking Cider Vinegar, Aloe Vera, and Chloropyl all seperately throughout the day and night, I think it is helping a little, although I have also been diagnosed with Emphysema, but I do feel better with the natural therapies I am now taking, you should try them too Emily.

    Good Luck.

That sounds horrible. I am on some supplements that have helped, D-limenone, and 5 mg melatonin and tryptophan before bed. You can google those for more info.

Have you thought about having surgery?

    Hello Emily,

I have been to 4 Doctors, and had something down my throat twice, yet they can't find what is causeng my burning throat and chronic breathlessness, I get so depressed and feel very miserable, because I have trouble blowing much air through the Peak Flow, because I have got this painful mucus throat, and smoked many years the doctors think it's Emphysema, however I believe it is

LPR Reflux. I am the same as you Emily, and I have been like this for 4 years.

    Hi Emily,

I have been following this thread for a little while, but haven’t posted until now, as it seems everyone here is suffering from exactly the same problems that I am.

I’ve had LPR for several years, but breathing problems have recently taken a frightening turn for the worse.  For example, climbing the stairwell has left me gasping for air; the other day, I couldn’t keep pace with fellow walkers while on a short walk.  I finished with a sharp pain in the center of my chest and short of breath; climbing a small hillsame thing.  Today, I am short of breath while just sitting.

Trying to sleep is a recurring source of stress.  For me, the LPR causes apnea which wakes me up.  This is followed by an adrenaline surge, and then the heart begins racing.  When it doesn’t settle down, I start to panic.  The fragments of sleep I do get, usually come while sitting in my wing chair.  Lying down to sleep is now impossible.

Recent cardio stress tests, lung function tests, asthma tests are all in normal range for my age, gender (57yo M), so that leaves LPR. But what can be done about it?  Can a doctor prescribe oxygen for this?  Is this my new normal?

Long term treatment with acid blockers doesn’t work.  All have awful side effects or even make the problem worse from my experience.  I’ve experimented with all manner of dietary changes and supplements.  But with no luck so far.

Lately I’ve been reading about SIBO, wondering if it could be the cause of this reflux.  Has anyone been positively tested for this?  If so, do antibiotics work?  What kind of specialist do I see about this?

Any thoughts or feedback will be much appreciated.  I’m definitely feeling desperate at this point.

Hi Bob, sorry I don't have the answer you are looking for but I do know SIBO can cause breathing problems - Anything that causes extra gas/pressure can give you this symptom.   I myself have or had SIBO which GI could not help.  Yes, a GI can order a breathing test you can take at home for this. I also have breathing problems but it does not appear to be from the lungs.  if your breathing problems is exhaling then you probably have  a lung problem, if is inhaling then is reflux or LPR.  I do have mild reflux and even Barretts (no dysplasia and is not progressing) but I do not take PPI's.  In my case they took out my GB 2-3 years ago which apparently caused bile reflux (not diagnosed) Sure, which GI is going t say he is to blame for your Barretts. ;-(((  Right now I have chest/back pain 24/7, lack of air inhaling and nasal.  No congestion so in my bok it has to be LPR.  If you have excess gas is another symptom of SIBO.  Hope all gets better for you, God Bless!

I am also suffering from similar symptoms,  I have suffered from heartburn for most of my life.  About 20 years ago I had the lap Nissan fundoplication done.  I am now 44.  The surgery helped some for a time,  about a year and a half ago it got really bad again and I went in and was put on a lot of acid blockers which did nothing to help me,  then the breathing issues started, it began with mouth breathing at night.  I would wake up stuffy and with a dry mouth,  then it got worse and now I am breathless all the time, I still breath through my mouth while sleeping,  I have burning sensations in my chest and it is tight all of the time,  I have noticed that if I eat the wrong things it gets much worse and it feels like I am having a heart attack.  And it takes a few days for it to calm down,  but the breathlessness never completely goes away, it gets worse when I have the burning sensations,  a year ago I had an endoscopy which only found some mild inflammation,  I also had the 24 hour ph study, which showed normal levels, I also had the motility study which was also normal,  I also went to an ENT and they looked in my sinuses with a scope, all normal, and tested me for asthma,  don’t have that either,  I suspect LPR,   But it’s very frustrating,  I hate the constant breathlessness,  I hope we can find some answers,  I am trying the gaviscon advance and trying to be strict on what I eat,  any advice or anything that is working?

I have the same exact symptoms!!! I literally feel like I wrote this. Have you found any relief yet?

How ironic, the symptom is what makes you anxious, and the anxiety causes the symptoms to continue. You need to reassure yourself for a solution.
