LPR or something else? Bitter/sour taste.......

I'm at a loss sad

One day last November I awoke with a 'bitter' taste in my mouth.

Several visits to my GP later and I'm still not much further forward.

I'm a 43 year old female. In October 2013 I was diagnosed hypothyroid and began treatment of 50mg levothyroxine per day. Because the bitter taste started relatively soon after beginning the medication, I put 2 and 2 together and thought it was causing the taste. But, no, I took myself off the medication for 3/4 weeks over Christmas and still had the bitter taste.

I've drastically altered my diet as I thought certain foods made it worse but can't pinpoint one particular allergy or sensitivity.......

I've changed toothpaste, tried mouthwash, cut out tea, milk, all dairy, and mainly eat very healthily - fruit, veggies and chicken.

My GP suggested LPR (silent acid reflux) but it doesn't taste like 'acid' - it's just bitter/sour.

I've been on Gaviscon after every meal for over a month and Ranitidine for almost 2 weeks. The symptoms persist still sad

My mouth can get quite dry, and the bitter taste seems to be on my tongue and/or the roof of my mouth or around a wisdom tooth on one side.

I can't cope with this for much longer. It only eases up when either sleeping or eating.

Anyone know what it is or has experiences anything similar please?

Thank you xx

Low stomach acid can also cause this. If you take any GERD meds, (Nexium, Pantaloc, etc) try skipping them for a few days and see if that helps. Also, get your thyroid checked as it can lead to low stomach acid production.

Hi I am going on 2 years. I had a tooth removed. Then it has not healed. A Biospy was done and it came back inflammation.  The bitter taste is horrible. It really does not affect my eating. I went to sleep on my back today and woke up it was bad. Then I sorta raised up it got better.  I don't have it when I get up in the mornings.  Does anyone suffer constipation as I do a lot due to meds.  Where the tooth was is red and sore and that is the side the taste is on.  Maybe they are not related. It started at 65 years old.  It is a horrible taste as everyone says. Any answers I will try.  Sorry all that is going through this.

Oh I do hppe you read this Mrs Pinkrat.   I, too have exactly the same thing.  Mine started last October with a sore throat.  When that disappeared I had a dry mouth and a horribile bitter taste which lasted all day.  I also felt a little nauseous.  It would only abate when I was physically eating something or asleep.  I have had my glal bladder tested, fine,   An endosocopy, some erosion on my esophagus, and a throat exam by an ENT.  I have been on PPI medicine to reduce the acid for three months, but it has made no difference at all.  I am now considering going off the medication as I don't like to take medicines.  The taste and dry mouth is driving me insane, it is so unpleasant.  I hope you have found a solution to this that you can share with me.

This past year I have had the same problem.  I do not find it realted to acid reflux, but it my be realted to sinus issues and/or Sjogren's syndrome (dry eyes, mouth and any organ in the body lkined with mucuous).  I have been on levothyroxine for 25 or more years, so that is not it . I am 48 and post-menopausal almost 2 years now.  It could be hormones or lack thereof, but I did not have this issue during an awful perimenopause where I bled for months at a time until finally it stopped for 7 straight months before resuming for 3 and then finally stopping...TG.  Anyhow, I was 47 when I officially completed menopause.  So I doubt either state is a direct cause.

I am 69 years old and have had the problem of dry mouth and poison taste in my mouth for a couple of years now. A year ago I was told I had the beginning of diabetis and the only way to fight this was by going on a diet and losing weight. Anyway I lost about 12kgs in 6 months by cutting out SUGAR foods from my diet. I have always had a sweet tooth and now believe it is sugar foods that are slowly poisoning me. For years my body has been working overtime trying to rid the sugar from it. You have nothing to lose by changing your diet (you are what you eat) and see if the dry mouth and poison taste goes away? I noticed that at christmas or my birthday when I eat the sweet stuff again, back comes the poison taste and dryness in my mouth. Its worth a try as sugar really is poison, a sweet death.

I have the same problems and it's driving me nuts.

It started after I took Topirimate for several months - within a short time I had a metallilc taste in my mouth and drinking water tasted like liquidised old pennies.

I consulted the medication leaflet and saw this could be a side effect but persevered a while longer until it and other side effects became untenable.

I stopped the medication before Xmas 2015 but still an plagued by this awful taste.

I have consulted a dentist who confirms I have no damaged fillings.  I will be seeing the hygienist for a 'clean' in the next few weeks.

My practice nurse feels the taste should've gone by now after being off the pills for over two months and advised me to consult my GP although I am reluctant as previous experience tell me I' unlikely to get any joy.

Has anyone else had the same experience with Topirimate and did the metal taste last a long time after ceasation?

This discussion has been an important resource for me, thank you.  I developed a metallic taste four months ago - it just arrived one day and hasn't left. It sometimes varies with intensity but I see no pattern. This is what I've tried: omeprazole, gaviscon, milk thistle, acupuncture, no alcohol, betaine HCL, oestrogen HRT (I saw a hormone specialist as I'd had light periods and remembered a metallic taste in pregancy) - and nothing touches it.  I'm 37 with normal blood results. Last week I went to ENT and had camera down oesphagus - nothing, and have referred been for an MRI 'just in case'.  The prognosis again and again seems to be that the cause is unknown and that I'll need to live with it.  Four months ago this news would have devestated me.  Now, although I hate this 'metal mouth' as we call it, my anxiety levels have dropped and I'm trying to engage with my life again.  This is a terrible, silent and invisible condition.  The hormone specialist suggested that if estrogen made no different, an insulin resistance test could be an option - but it feels like clutching at straws now... I am otherwise fit (ish) and healthy.

Thanks for posting your stories - it's been a lonely and frustrating journey!

Have you tested your saliva ph? Normal healthy saliva is 7.5-7.1, any thing higher could indicate acidosis and any thing below alkalosis.

Hi I searched up bad taste in my mouth and have ended up here!

i want to add a new thinking for some of you and am concerned it's already mentioned.

there are lots of chemicals in everything.

your clothes your furniture your bedding.ever wondered why new carpet smells so?

please look it as an overloaded immune system response and look at protecting your respiratory system from allergines.

    I personally am.

please take time to rest and flush your body from these chemicals.

    try garlic the great protector.

look at healing your body with love and cherish yourselves while doing this.

sun and walks and filtered water, or boiled water.herbal teas.

take care and read up on what you can on naturally healing your system.
