LPR/Silent Reflux - desperately in need of a miracle. Has anyone recovered from this?

Hi - I'll be as brief as possible. For almost a year I have had symptoms which have worsened, starting with throat clearing and progressing to regular spiting out of white, frothy stuff, post nasal drip, lump in throat or sharp sensation, streaming or blocked nose and hoarseness. These are all unpleasant and irritating but because I talk for a living my work is becoming badly affected so it is now making me depressed and anxious as well. I was referred to ENT, had the camera up the nose and down the throat to rule out anything sinister and was given Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance. No advice, no explanation. I had to find it all out myself. (and I'm not confident/assertive with docs, either).
The drugs haven't helped, I'd go so far as to say the reflux significantly worsened. I had faith in the Gaviscon Advance having read how it works but that hasn't made any difference either. I have monitored everything I eat and drink and can't find anything that triggers it with the possible exception of bread, and I may be grasping at straws there. Certainly coffee, alcohol, spicy food etc don't trigger it and ginger, acidophillus, apple cider vinegar don't help. It does seem to be cyclical - I'll have a week or so of decreased symptoms then it gradally works up again to two or 3 weeks of hell. No heartburn, and the reflux is almost always upright, no problems sleeping...just the other 17 hours a day! The ENT was brusque on my return visit and said that, aside from speech therapy, there was nothing more he could do for me. This can't go on, though. At it's worst it makes me tearful and desperate at work and speech therapy isn't going to stop me spitting up into a whole toilet roll each day, or reduce the other symptoms. I'm also worried my teeth will rot and I fear for my job. Has anyone experienced this with the same pattern/lack of triggers etc? I would love to hear any positive experiences that don't just repeat the same old same old, ie, raise the bed 6 inches, dos and donts with food etc.

I commented on here about 2 weeks ago when I started my treatment. I wanted to give an update on my progress. I do feel that my symptoms have lessened, they are still there but definitely not as irritating. I have not changed my diet much, except that I am drinking less coffee, only on the days I am extremely tired and feel I need it, as opposed to everyday as I was before. Currently I am taking omeprazole in the morning (40mg), and zantac at night when I remember. I have been drinking iceland water with a ph of 8.88 for about a week. I just started gaviscon about 4 days ago. I am also taking the herbs gentian root, dgl licorice, marshmallow root, slippery elm, and aloe vera juice. I have read these will help heal my red and swollen larynx which is what causes the constant throat clearing and coughing. And mcson like you I get the cough immediately after eating. What I find strange is that I get the cough much worse after lunch, but not so much after dinner. I usually feel the worst towards the end of the workday, between 3 and 6 pm the post nasal drip becomes very bothersome and the throat clearing as well. I used to cough a lot in the morning when I woke up but that has seemed to stop. i really want to take the pesin test, to see how my levels are but we do not have it in the US and it would cost $175 for the UK version, so I will wait to see if these treatments help.
JPT you had the surgery correct? Did this completely cure your LPR?
I feel if what I'm doing doesn't work I am going to go that route, I cant imagine having to deal with this for the rest of my life.

Thank you for the update, it is very useful for me to anticipate where I am heading to.
I have actually changed my diet ever since ths thing happened to me; I eat less sugar, drink no coffee and less tea. Instead I eat more greens and try to reduce the amount of dairy and meat I consume over a perod of week.
Like you, I was drinking coffee everyday, but now I do not at all
As for the medication, I am taking Nexium ( I believe it is a version of omeprazole here in Europe) twice a day, 3x1 Gaviscon Advance and different from you I need to clean my sinuses as my ENT told me that I have sinisutis as well.
I also try to drink high pH water as far as I can find.
I see that you mentioned you are taking '' I am also taking the herbs gentian root, dgl licorice, marshmallow root, slippery elm, and aloe vera juice.''
Do you take them seperately or is there a pill or something like that?
Very interesting to hear that we have very similar symptoms! I get the cough immediately after eating, much worse after lunch, but not so much after dinner.
I also feel the worst towards the end of the workday, between 3 and 6 pm, the post nasal drip becomes very bothersome and the throat clearing as well. This also affects my voice obviously.
However different from you I get no symptoms in the morning. In fact only in the morning I feel like normal! This makes my case interesting because for some doctors someone with GERD or LPR, symptoms should not be lessen during the night.
As for PepTest, I really want to take the test also, but similar to you we do not have it her ein Turkey and it costs around $175 to get it here also. Therefore I will wait to see if treatment helps until I see my ENT next time in 2 weeks.
Please keep in touch and update eachother!
All the best!!!

the slippery elm, marshmallow root and gentian root are all capsules. At first I got a gentian root that was liquid but it was impossible to drink it was unbelievably bitter even when I mixed it with really sweet things, but i found a capsule on the internet so it was much easier. The aloe vera is a liquid and the kind I have just tastes like water. The dgl is a chewable chocolate flavor so not that bad.
i read that the gentian root has the ability to tone the sphincter muscle, and the others have the ability to heal the larynx.
I am also going to order manuka honey, i have read other people have used it and it has helped.

Thank you for your information.
I will try to order them online obviously.
Manuka honey I sed before when I was diagnosed with gastritis. It really works I believe in killing H.Pylori bacteria.
all the best!

I have just bought and read Thomas83's book on Amazon. I would recommend it to everyone with this condition - it will help answer all the queries that have been raised on this forum and more. It is easy to read and has saved me months of researching. It has also given me some hope and ideas for treatment - which I did not have before.

I've been buying iceland pure spring water from walgreens, luckily the very large bottle 33.8 fl ounces has been on sale at my store for 2 for $2. I have pretty much replaced drinking regular water with it but would like to know if i don't need to be drinking only this water as well.
I have noticed a significant decrease in my symptoms but mainly when I don't drink coffee i feel much better, I don't know if i can attribute it to the water, I've been drinking it for about 2 weeks now.

"Gargle and swallow some of this alkaline PH 9.5 water daily."
It was from the site "healing well" forum where he posted "10 ways to beat Airway Reflux"
Interesting article, i just put in that title and his post came right up. I will search my
walgreens though for Iceland, thanks for the tip

Just to mention the reason for alkaline water.
Pepsin is the most serious aggressor in Reflux and is difficult to remove as it lays dormant deep in the airway epithelial cells where it can be reactivated when the local pH is lowered (made more acid) with food or drink.
scientifically Pepsin is an enzyme that is hard to kill. It is produced by the stomach to digest protein.
Outside the stomach in the delicate airway cells it digests us!
to denature Pepsin ie permanently killl it the pH level needs to be over ph8.0. Bear in mind that tap water is around pH7.0 so you dont need to go crazy.
Tests have shown that alkaline water is a useful tool for those of us who have LPR.
I started to use it after researching LPR and discovering that the inflamation caused by Pepsin is what makes our breathing difficult with an asthma like effect. It also blocks your nasal passages and causes PND.(Post Nasal Drip). Higher pH alkaline water is hard to find but easy to make. Google 'Alkaline Water Flask' and then click images. You will notice that these flasks are all different prices but are exactly the same in different colours. They make the water from minerals coming into contact with ordinary tap water. You should be able to get one for around £25 or less. You can then use the resulting water that I have had a lab test to get pH 8.0 drinking water. I think it takes 2 hours waterever they say.
Then I use it daily as a gargle and swallow with nasal sinuse rinsing to clear all airway passages. I also atomise some the do the back of the throat and bronchus.
It works for me. There is no need to for very high pH it is not nessesary. I have had the LINX surgery which I rate as 80% effecient in clearing LPR.
But with other measures I take like the water I believe 90% + is possible.
There is no reccomended amount of water to take as this concept is relatively new.
I drink some on waking, 30 mins after meals, (the time of Pepsin creation) and before bed. I have a glass by the bed too.
Its not often that a cheap fix comes along that big pharma cannot make a buck out of but this is pretty close.
Good luck to you all, come back and let us know if it works for you.
I am delighted to say I receive a lot of mail that says it does.
Best Regards JPT
PS. Sodium Bicarbonate in quantity is not good for your kidneys so dont use it .

I have follow up your posts. Many thanks for the great information. I had the PH test, I carried the monitor for 24 hours. A bit uncomfortable. Obviously it confirmed the reflux! Has any one had the hiatus hernia repair? I may need the surgery as it seems I have silent aspiration into my lungs. I take 40 mg of nexium and Zantac 300. Low ejection fraction if gallbladder. I am due to have chemo too. Can you let me. Know your experiences if you had the surgery

This is an advice from me to all of you. I was dealing with acid reflux for nearly 4 years and I was on antacids and PPI's causing me all those bad side effects. I wanted to find a natural solution for my problem and I started searching on the web like you. In different forums like this one, a lot of sufferers mentioned different solutions, supplements etc. I was desperate and every time someone suggested a supplement I bought it. But this is NOT a permanent solution. Some of them gives a relief but later on I had the same bad symptoms. Then someone suggests an ebook with complete treatment of the condition and I bought it. I have followed everything on it and after 20 days all my symptoms are gone. You must follow a proven solutions to have better and permanent results, not just trying different remedies or supplements each time like I used to do with no results. Do you want a temporary relief or a permanent cure?
So my advice is to follow a proven treatment, be patien and stick on that for 2-3 weeks to see real results. I bought at least 6-7 ebooks for acid reflux, but the only one helped me and I recommend it to you is the book "escaping the hell of acid reflux". I bought it direct from author's website. easy steps to follow with special recipes for patients with reflux.Send me a message if you want the link.
Now I am fine and there is no reason for me to visit forums like this one. The only reason I am doing it, is that I want to help anyone who will ask my help and want to get rid of this condition, because I know how terrible this condition is and I understand what most of you are going through.

I am really interested in this book, but I dont have an E reader device. Is there any otherr way you can download it. Also, you say all your symptoms are gone. My worst symptom is shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. I used to run half marathons and now I get out of breath climbing the stairs. Did you suffer from this and if so has it improved?

Thank you for your tremendous contribution, I really appreciate that.
Do you think pH 8.22 will be sufficient to deactivate Pepsin? And how often should I drink such water?
Many thanks in advance
All the best!!

Interesting reading how each individual copes with this awful condition. We are all different in personality and lifestyles. My way of managing this health problem, after being diagnosed with LPR, was to analyse my eating habits, and try to change things. My worst fault was eating and drinking food too hot; not good! Comfort eating (wrong foodstuffs) too much or too little; not good! I was prescribed Omeprazole 20 mg morning and nighttime, also Gaviscon Advanced. My airways seemed to be tight so I began a breathing exercise, done in the sitting position. Hands on each side of rib cage, leaning forward 'huff' 4 x times; sometimes this made me feel dizzy, 'reason for doing it in the sitting position'. Have breakfast, and go out for a daily walk. While walking I would occasionally 'huff' to open airways again. Doing this daily and taking medication worked for me. I now take 1 x 10mg Omeprazole in the morning and 1 x teaspoon of Gaviscon Advanced before bed. I'm not completely cured, but life is much more pleasant now.
