LPR/Silent Reflux - desperately in need of a miracle. Has anyone recovered from this?

Hi - I'll be as brief as possible. For almost a year I have had symptoms which have worsened, starting with throat clearing and progressing to regular spiting out of white, frothy stuff, post nasal drip, lump in throat or sharp sensation, streaming or blocked nose and hoarseness. These are all unpleasant and irritating but because I talk for a living my work is becoming badly affected so it is now making me depressed and anxious as well. I was referred to ENT, had the camera up the nose and down the throat to rule out anything sinister and was given Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance. No advice, no explanation. I had to find it all out myself. (and I'm not confident/assertive with docs, either).
The drugs haven't helped, I'd go so far as to say the reflux significantly worsened. I had faith in the Gaviscon Advance having read how it works but that hasn't made any difference either. I have monitored everything I eat and drink and can't find anything that triggers it with the possible exception of bread, and I may be grasping at straws there. Certainly coffee, alcohol, spicy food etc don't trigger it and ginger, acidophillus, apple cider vinegar don't help. It does seem to be cyclical - I'll have a week or so of decreased symptoms then it gradally works up again to two or 3 weeks of hell. No heartburn, and the reflux is almost always upright, no problems sleeping...just the other 17 hours a day! The ENT was brusque on my return visit and said that, aside from speech therapy, there was nothing more he could do for me. This can't go on, though. At it's worst it makes me tearful and desperate at work and speech therapy isn't going to stop me spitting up into a whole toilet roll each day, or reduce the other symptoms. I'm also worried my teeth will rot and I fear for my job. Has anyone experienced this with the same pattern/lack of triggers etc? I would love to hear any positive experiences that don't just repeat the same old same old, ie, raise the bed 6 inches, dos and donts with food etc.

I feel so awful that everyone has these symptoms yet nothing seems to work. I have been on a yeast cleanse for a week now and do not see any change. I am still on PPI medication and taking supplements to heal the larynx and drinking alkaline water but still face the constant throat clearing. Today i have started a cleanse using psyllium powder and am hoping this will clear any toxins that may be in my system. I for some reason do not believe it is acid causing my LPR symptoms and wish there was a way to figure out if it is. is there a test to see if acid, pepsin are present? I believe my problem is because of candida so if i don't see changes in a few weeks after the cleanse i will have to rule this out as well.

Here is an update if my last 3 days with some improvements on throat clearing symptoms. I had been on the reflux diet a week and had seen no change in symptoms. Probiotic everyday with very healthy eating and alkaline water. So yesterday I managed to get a huge bottle of gaviscon advance. I totally forgot about the diet for one day and ate whatever I fancied and drank 1 beer ( first in 5 months!). I had a mixed grill with chips, poached eggs on toast but with plenty of fruit and veg also. Only difference is that I glugged 20 ml of gaviscon advance 20 minutes after each meal and symptoms were definately reduced. I also chewed airwaves gum about 20 minutes after the gaviscon. What I am saying is that no matter what I eat, symptoms stay the same which suggests that it isn't too much acid but a physical fault. I am in with a new GP tomorrow so will keep posted to see what the outcome is. Give gaviscon a try, also take it 20 minutes before sleeping. Will do this regularly and hopefully give the oesophagus/les time to heal. Time will tell.

It is the UK version liquid. Gaviscon Advance. It needs to be this one as it forms a raft barrier over the top of the stomach contents which doesn't allow any to escape. The other formulas I believe just alleviate acid by neutralising it. I'm sure you could order online but it is fairly expensive. I am lucky as I just got 3 x 500ml bottles prescribed through my military medical centre. I have been taking again today and it has definately helped. I am in with stomach specialist first week of October so will continue to take it until then. Who knows, after a month of taking it regularly it might get rid completely. Good luck to you Jamie, have you tried chewing gum after eating too?

burning mouth and I have a white tongue. I don't understand how sometimes I can have just the burning
mouth or the burning/sore throat or vice versa. I follow a strict diet eating what everyone suggests I should be eating and yet my symptoms persist. I don't feel any reflux I burp a lot and I retch occasionally . I never
regurgitate food and I don't think lying down after eating affects me. I wonder if it could just be acid vapours
that are seeping up and if so do they seep up all the time. This only started for me in April and I find it really
confusing . I'm having tests in London on Monday but what I want to know is is will the acid levels show up on the 24 hour impedance test and the manometry test. The pale white tongue to me shows that something is
not right - could that be acid. I also seem to get what feels like a rough coating on my teeth which disappears after brushing. I had an endoscopy 8 weeks after this all started and some biopsies were taken but nothing
showed up .
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Maria

One thing I found, and that I've been doing for the past 9 days, before I heard about LPR (silent reflux), is the Whole30 eating plan, which is supposed to be beneficial, if not miraculous, in the healing of acid reflux. Basically, you cut ALL dairy, grains, legumes, sugars and soys from your diet and ONLY eat meat, veggies (one could cut out the tomatoes, onions, etc.) fruit, and "healthy fats" and oils from avocados and coconuts and olives. You eat this way for 30 days, 100%, absolute elimination, and it should clear your gut, after which you go to maintenance mode and can re-introduce foods to your diet.
I'm not sure if this would go for "Airway Reflux" as well, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has experience with it, OR if you decide to do it, how it works for you. The first week of the program, I was feeling great, but today all the sudden I had a HORRIBLE sore throat, so I'll have to think if something in particular set it off. I know that there is debate over whether fats are good or bad for reflux, and I believe that fried foods are bad, but that healthy fats from avocado and coconut could be distinguished (as opposed to one of the very early posts saying these were prohibited) as the fat is needed in order to digest the food that one is eating. Without fat, you cannot digest food, causing a disruption in your acid levels. The plan also calls for eating three meals large enough not to snack in between, but for the LPR it seems like small, frequent meals are the way to go. So, I'm not sure about that and would love to have a second opinion. Hope to hear from you! Thanks!

Thank you for all of your great ideas and candid discussions. My road to LPR started over a year ago with the very stressful caretaking of my elderly father (who suffered from esophageal cancer... a terrifically horrible type of cancer). The last few months of his battle were particularly horrific for him but also for me as his only family.
I bring this up becasue I wonder if severe stress can either bring this on or make it worse if you had say a mild case of LPR?
I have struggeld like most of you. Trips to the ER not being able to swallow, trips to a variety of "specialists" who variously told me I had: sinusitus and put me on massive antibiotics for months, a severe cold that never went away, that I was insane, on to a GI, then to ENT, then to Rheumatoidologist, GP, back to ENT, GI surgery for Globus (which helped remove globus) and then around and around.
Even ENT has given me the heave-ho! I guess because I want a definitive answer and no one can give me anything more than what I can research myself on the internet.... So on my own I have found the following helped me (although I am by no means "cured" ) I used the "Dropping Acid" book to help.
1-mostly vegetarian diet -- I cut out Gluten too and Dairy
2-no spices or acidic foods... basically nothing processed or fried or packaged
3- eating alkaline
4-No exercise except first thing in morning on empty tummy
5-chewing slippery elm gum or even sugar free gum
6- Alkaline water -- am going to try the WellBlue-PH-Portable-Pitcher-Filtration/ please let me know if anyone has tried this!
7-reducing stress---yes easy to say not easy to do...but I find this condition is worse when I allow myself to be stressed
8-don't eat after 7 pm
9- try drinking coconut milk... it is great! (and they have coconut ice cream too...)
10-repress your innate desire to clear your throat.... it makes things worse
What did not help:
1-Prilosec
2-raising bed
3-saline in nose
4-any nasal sprays
5-This may sound nuts (LOL) but I survived on Xanax in the early days after diagnosis.. it helped lower my stress about the restrictive diet and the feelings of being all alone and also may have helped me through severe depression (understandable I think for anyone going through this)
Be prepared for others to think you are:
1-making this up
2-exaggerating
3-nuts
4-trying to get attention
I did lose a job over this... I could not function after a few months although I did try. Public Relations is not a good career for someone with LPR!
I am working part-time for much less money, and I still trying to find an actual answer to what LPR REALLY is and why there is not a groundswell of doctors demanding answers or clinical trials for this!
I wish everyone good luck and I especially want everyone to go away from this feeling that there IS hope. It is not the end of the world (although I certainly thought it was for a long time) You can take things into your own hands and get better. I recommend seeing as many doctors as you can to see if there is one who will help you through it. But unless you have a doctor who actually suffered/suffers from this.... I truly doubt they will "get" it. Until then .... we can hope!

POTASSIUM deficiency causes a lot of problems such as acidity and silent reflux. Increasing my potassium
levels is helping but the improvements are gradual because of the healing that is taking place. It is important also to balance potassium with other important minerals. However, potassium should be the highest content mineral in the diet. All raw fruits and vegetables have potassium with the highest content, the way our
CREATOR made them.

Any updates from anyone so far? Any improvement or etc.?
Also what do you think is the best method for diagnosis of LPR; 24 hour Ph metering or peptest or anything else?
I have got my throat and stomach checked my endoscopic devices. The results came that I had chemical gastritis in the stomach and vocal cords and throat were irritated.
However the stomach endoscopy did not show any sypmtoms of GERD and the spincher seemed totally fine.
I am really interested how you guys got diagnosed with LPR?
Many thanks in advance

I spent many years of believing I had a severe allergy problem and took medication for antihistamines and decongestants. Sometimes I would get an awful throat infection and have blood coming out of my nose, but I would never get a fever. I was recently shocked to discover I had LPR and I have a hiatal hernia, so no amount of PPI's or antacids prevents the nasty stuff from coming up and activating the pepsin.
Disclaimer: I'm an alkaline advocate. I agree with JPT. The research is still ongoing, but here's a thorough article about it

Eating/drinking alkaline has helped me tremendously. I've eliminated processed foods and cook everything from scratch. I eat as much raw veg as I can.
If that doesn't appeal to you, here are a few of my other LPR tricks.
>>>A green juice (mostly celery, greens, and cucumber, with very little apple, pear, beet and/or carrot) with raw ginger root every morning. I wash my produce with alkaline water to remove contaminants. If you don't have a water ionizer, just add a scoop of baking soda to a tub of water and soak them for a few minutes before washing.
>>>DGL several times a day. You will get really sick of the licorice taste, but it's worth it.
>>>Eating soup or porridge for dinner (HOMEMADE)--like a chicken vegetable soup or Chinese rice porridge with steamed fish and sliced ginger. Added bonus: I find this helps me slim down too!
>>>Eating well--I find that eating too little or skipping meals makes the symptoms worse. Probably because your stomach creates more acid when you're hungry.
This is just from personal experience. Hope it helps!

I was diagnosed last week. I had the worst sore throat!! Got prescribed OMEPRAZOLE...AKA Prilosec. After lots of investigation, turns out not such a nice drug... I am choosing NOT to take it.
Anyone ever try things like ACV (apple cider vinegar), bentonite clay, pro & pre biotics & digestive enzymes and coconut oil with a low sugar diet? Did it work?
Check this guy out, he is talking about ACV here but he describes reflux and its causes waaaaaaaaay differently than any doctor I've listened to or material I've read. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1e2O_UjoGk
