LPR/Silent Reflux - desperately in need of a miracle. Has anyone recovered from this?

Posted , 270 users are following.

Hi - I'll be as brief as possible. For almost a year I have had symptoms which have worsened, starting with throat clearing and progressing to regular spiting out of white, frothy stuff, post nasal drip, lump in throat or sharp sensation, streaming or blocked nose and hoarseness. These are all unpleasant and irritating but because I talk for a living my work is becoming badly affected so it is now making me depressed and anxious as well. I was referred to ENT, had the camera up the nose and down the throat to rule out anything sinister and was given Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance. No advice, no explanation. I had to find it all out myself. (and I'm not confident/assertive with docs, either).

The drugs haven't helped, I'd go so far as to say the reflux significantly worsened. I had faith in the Gaviscon Advance having read how it works but that hasn't made any difference either. I have monitored everything I eat and drink and can't find anything that triggers it with the possible exception of bread, and I may be grasping at straws there. Certainly coffee, alcohol, spicy food etc don't trigger it and ginger, acidophillus, apple cider vinegar don't help. It does seem to be cyclical - I'll have a week or so of decreased symptoms then it gradally works up again to two or 3 weeks of hell. No heartburn, and the reflux is almost always upright, no problems sleeping...just the other 17 hours a day! The ENT was brusque on my return visit and said that, aside from speech therapy, there was nothing more he could do for me. This can't go on, though. At it's worst it makes me tearful and desperate at work and speech therapy isn't going to stop me spitting up into a whole toilet roll each day, or reduce the other symptoms. I'm also worried my teeth will rot and I fear for my job. Has anyone experienced this with the same pattern/lack of triggers etc? I would love to hear any positive experiences that don't just repeat the same old same old, ie, raise the bed 6 inches, dos and donts with food etc.

@ Alkaline gal , thanks for the link. I wish I had the money to buy a water alkalizer but I can't afford. These drops I found on Amazon are wonderful and do the trick for now.

Hi Alex, I am new to the site. I had a lymph node and when I went to an ENT he removed it and said it was not cancerous. He then said I have a throat that looks like it is soaking in acid! I saw the pictures and it didn't look to bad, but I went back twice now every three months. It is getting worse! I now have what is called a shelve. It is a piece of skin that has grown across my throat. Today he said I have to live with my allergies, (I never knew I had) and my nasal drip too. I am concern because could it be something I am allergic to and don't know it, I do have two cats too. What really alarms me is he said his concern would be if it turns into cancer!! He also said 98% od individuals go through surgery procedures and it is completely curable, only 2% have difficulties. I can not believe this is happening. It has been about 6 months now and he told me today it will take time because it is 20 years of damage done with smoking and alcohol and foods. I do not drink or smoke any longer and my eating habits have changed some. I wonder if I am on too much medications too. I take Zantac 150mg. at bed time he just raised that today from 100mg. I take Omeprazole 40mg twice a day, and that was just raised today as well. I still use Nasonex twice a day too. That seems to irritate my throat when it drains from my nose.

If you have any ideas or any one else could help ease my mind with the cancer threat I would greatly appreciate it. I do have anxiety disorder and this news does not help. I did have ulcers in the past (about 15 years ago) so he has also referred me to a doctor to take a look at my stomach too.

Hi not really sure if i am on the correct forum but any advice is greatly received. About 2 months ago I started with what I though was a cold, this did not really develop, only congestion on the right side of my nose and a sore throat again just on the one side.

I have suffered with allergies all of my life but this year had been particularly bad, prescription antihistamines and a newby for me allergy induced asthma. Was given fexofenadine and clynil back in April.

So back to point, with the nasal congestion and sore throat ( right side only) I started with acid reflux, have had this on and off in the past but not with the other symptoms. So a trip to the local gp and was prescribed

Omperazole, this seemed to work ok but I still had the nasal congestion which o be honest has been driving me mad, it is mainly on the one side but it does alternate occasionally.

My other symptoms have been pressure on bridge of nose, burning in maxillary sinuses and dizziness which I can relate to my allergies, even though I am still taking antihistsmines.

2 courses of anti biotics to make sure nothing was infected but I had a feeling nothing was infected.

With the acid I don't get the feeling of things getting stuck in my throat , I don't have a cough or hoarseness,

Just a sore throat and sinus congestion.

Today it has all started over again, both the acid and the sinus allergy problems, the only thing I have done

    Is being exposed to mold,

Is there anyone out there who can relate to all this.?

The latest prescription was for singular , don't really get that one,!!?!!

    Thanks

    Hello my friends,

I call u friends because u have all helped me through my year and a half of torment. (although mine has not been half as difficult as some.)

I started getting sore throats and earaches about 1 and a half years ago. It never stopped. Nothing helped. I had a camera in my throat 3 times the third said that there was an opening of the LES. I was basically told no hope except the usual meds no fats no alcholol etc.. It was aweful. I got dipressed and it put a strain on my relationship. I tried everything apple cider head up in bed nothing helped. Earlier this year I also tried the Ph diet all to no avail.

I wanted to share my experience with those still suffering. (i say still because i feel im on the way out)I had problems with all the meds they gave me it just increased my problems. I was sooooooooooo scared of cancer it was all i could think about. I decided i wanted to get an op done even though my symptons were mild i didnt want the hasle of cancer. ( hassle !!!!)

I asked the doctor about the fundo whatsitcalled. He said i wouldnt be able to lift my son again if i had it and also i could nver vomit again. I walked out and said i wasnt interested.I thought about the magnetic strip that they have in the us and uk but I dont have the money as I am an expat and would have to pay for it.

One day on the net i found a small note about a book called heartburn cured. I bought it and decided to follow his low carb diet.

2 weeks later and drinking wine and eating meat and veg I felel 99 percent better and am hoping for a full recovery. PLease try this book it really helped me. I hope it helps you too out of the dark place.

    Greg

This made me really down. I went back to the net to see if i had missed something.

    Hello everyone smile

I was so blessed to find this site and get many answers and the strength to seek a different solution to my didiagnosis of LPR reflux/silent reflux. The ENT I saw gave me a script for 6 weeks of prilosec - 4 (20mg) tablets a day and Flovent to calm my throat down. Anyways.......I wasn't doing the prilosec...no way.

Searched around and asked many questions and here is what is working for me .....2 weeks now smile

I also had blood work done to determine what I am allergic too. I am moderately allergic to peanuts, very low allergic response to gluten/wheat/oat/lemon/cantalope/shell fish and maple trees.

Thus I have gone gluten free, wheat free.....etc. I am to avoid the above foods for 3 months and then slowly introduce if I choose to. I will see.

Stress caused all this mess in my body, along with eating whole wheat muffins with peanut butter and banana on top in the morning. I also loved drinking my 8 glasses of water with fresh squeezed lemon in it.

    ______________________________________________________________________

Drinking water with a pH of 9

Probiotic in the morning on empty stomach and in the evening on empty stomach

    Digestive enzyme before every meal.

Trikatu (digest support ) after breakfast and supper.

Whole leaf Aloe Vera juice - 2 TBL spoon after every meal.

Oh yes......I don't eat three hours before bed and no water two hours before bed.

    _________________________________________________________________________

So is it working......YES YES YES

I feel like a new person. Stomach is calm. Tickle in throat is gone. Cough is gone. My larynx (voice box) is healing....if I talk a lot my voice will become hoarse....this may take a little longer to be completely healed. I am sleeping 8 hours again. I did elevate my bed....trying to decide if I should undo this - I may wait the 3 months till I undo this. I will let you know. In the beginning before I had

a diagnosis....I was trying everything. I went to gastrinologist...he said I do not have GERD, he said he never heard of LPR?? He said I have a severe case of allergic rhinitis with an aggravated larynx.

The ENT did scope my throat..which I was very thankful for because he saw that all was pink and healthy, only my larynx was irritated. I then contacted a person who works with herbs and suggested the above list of supplements I am taking. Then I visited my doctor who ordered the blood test to see what I was allergic to.....we put all the information together and he agreed with the probiotic, digestive enzyme, trikatu, aloe vera....and said go for it.

The past two weeks have been wonderful for my body and my peace .....having a plan of action and knowing my healing is coming.

    Thanks for listening smile

    Hello everyone,

I have to say I feel very relieved to have found his site - it seems to have answered all my symptoms I have had for some time now.

I am going to ENT later today and I have armed myself with my list of symptoms. It will be very interesting to see if the specialist diagnoses that I have LPR or nothing at all!

I certainly have all the same symptoms as everyone else here - the coughing to clear my throat, lots of muscus, too much saliva production, loss of voice etc - but could I ask if anyone has these symptoms as well please:

    • Sneeze LOTS - especially first thing in the morning

    • Constant ringing in ear/s

    • Choke on certain foods or even when laughing out loud?

    • Loss of voice after talking for a while in a meeting at work say?

It would be really helpful to know if these are all linked to LPR as well?

Good luck to everyone else - I really hope you all find some sort of solution to help relieve your symptoms.

I've yet to discover mine :-/

    Thanks

    Dear Natalie and fellow sufferers,

I have reflux disorder and yes I share several of your symptoms: I sneeze (loudly) in the morning; have tinnitus and my voice deteriorates when talking for a while - in meetings, on the phone, and especially when singing. This is particularly upsetting for me, as I have been running a choir, and have to give that up. I have spoken to professional singers who have reflux problems - I think it may be linked somehow?

I am new to this site, but have had this condition for many years. My main trouble is choking at night, which can be very frightening - does anyone else have thoughts on what can help that? I have tried not eating after 6 and elevating the head of my bed, and I sleep with masses of pillows - all to no sustainable benefit.

I have seen specialists, who want me to have tests such as ph manometry and endoscopy, but I am very anxious that they might actually make the condition and my voice worse?

I have not read the whole of this thread yet, so apologies if all this has been mentioned earlier.. It is a great help to be able to read and share experiences with others.

    Thanks,

    J

So I'm having issues similar to yourselves. I went on a PPI for what my doctor said was dyspepsia. I realised that it would be damaging in the long run so I came off after 4months. That was 5 months ago. After coming off I have suffered from a burning in my throat several times a day, lump in my throat, excess mucus, asthmatic type symptoms and no heartburn or reflux. At times the burning wakes me up at night, though it isn't really painful it is uncomfortable. I did not have this prior to PPIs. I'm terrified and feel like I'm out of ideas. I've lost weight, tried to cut out acidic things in my diet etc. I recently had antibiotics a month ago. Which seems to have made everything worse. I just don't get why all this has happened after PPIs. I had only occasional acid backing into my throat and heartburn before; this throat burning is constant.....

I was blessed to find this site and now I know what is wrong with me. I have had this problem for over 40 years. I am 55 years old. I have had all of the symptoms that you all have mentioned. I have never been to a doctor about it though.I have tried antacids, apple cider vinegar, etc. Nothing has worked. I live in Canada. I don't know what the water is that you are talking about. Will digestive enzymes help?

After reading throught the posts here im convinced that i have LPR, not GORD as my doctor thinks. Is LPR not widely known about by GPs? Im seeing him on Friday and need to know what is the best thing to ask him, I was going to ask for a H. Pylori test? Also has anyone had any success with the LINX band because I am considering getting the money together and getting one fitted?

    I found a wonderfull site by http://chriskresser.com/get-rid-of-heartburn-and-gerd-forever-in-three-simple-steps

i am trying the low carb diet. It keeps getting better then i mess up by eating some sugar or other things. I have had a constant sore throat for about 1 year now and a few months. I am constantly terrified my esophogus is messed up. I am still on the low carb diet as it has been the most succesful thing i have done i must be more strict though. Trouble is when i get a bit of relief I think mmmm lets munch hahahhaah.

I am going to buy some aloe vera tablets and some hci tablets and going to buy some new kefir grains. I have a box of digestive enzymes too. I am also gonna try to get some bitters.

Im gonna put it all together and beat this cursed thing

i will let u know how it goes.

    Good luck

I too was thinking about the band magnet thing but will really have to save up as they dont do it where i live and i am an expat so will have to pay if i want to go back to the uk

good luck let us know what works

we are all in this together.

    Hi everyone

For all possible LPR (Airway Reflux) sufferers here are the basic things to do before you contemplate surgery. For many this will improve symptoms to the point where you don't need it.

For others like me LINX was an additional benefit.

    1. Lose weight, borderline BMI is not good enough, get shot of some more pounds now.

Start the fasting 5:2 diet, your body will lose weight and repair itself

    2. Eat 3 small meals a day never a 1 large one.

    3. Stop eating fat!!!

I've just returned from the USA and put on 5lbs in 2 week, everything is fried and its hard to find a vegetable. Fat and protein makes the body overproduce acid and Pepsin.

    4. Practise Diaphragm Breathing, This will strengthen the muscles that make the LES muscles work.

    5. Get some alkaline drops online and use them in your drinking water to gargle and swallow.

Also use as a nasal rinse.

This will lift the pH to over pH8.0 which will denature (kill off) the aspirated Pepsin than is causing inflammation and your airway problems.

    6. Improve the speed food moves through your stomach with a high fibre supplement like 'Fibogel'

    7. Don't eat or drink anything 3 hours before bed.

    8. Drink no soda or alcohol or caffiene.

    9. Try this, Come back here in a month and tell me how you feel.

My research notes are available if you want to send me an email direct.

    Best Regards JPT

    Hi JPT,

Its all good advice. The only thing I would have to go opposite with you is the fat. On a low carb you eat a lot of lean meat and i have never felt better. Also butter in my eggs and even my coffee. The book I mentioned in an earlier post is called heartburn cured Norm Robillard and he says the problem is that we have a weak les muscle. when we eat carbs be them sweets fruit veg the microbes in our gut produce nitrogen. This creates pressure in our upper gut and will cause a weak les muscle to open. When you change to a low carb diet and consume more protein it is broken down further down the gut. so the gas passes out the other end.allowing the weak les muscle to close and stop reflux passing up.

Please dont shoot the messenger. The more I find out about reflux the more i think it is up to each individual.

I have to say i have had more positive results with this that with a low fat diet. I don't know why it just worked out that way. Your advice iss good. Im not looking for a fight just wanted to pass on what has helped me. Also again I think people have to see what works for each of them. The book is worth a read.
