LPR/Silent Reflux - desperately in need of a miracle. Has anyone recovered from this?

Posted , 270 users are following.

Hi - I'll be as brief as possible. For almost a year I have had symptoms which have worsened, starting with throat clearing and progressing to regular spiting out of white, frothy stuff, post nasal drip, lump in throat or sharp sensation, streaming or blocked nose and hoarseness. These are all unpleasant and irritating but because I talk for a living my work is becoming badly affected so it is now making me depressed and anxious as well. I was referred to ENT, had the camera up the nose and down the throat to rule out anything sinister and was given Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance. No advice, no explanation. I had to find it all out myself. (and I'm not confident/assertive with docs, either).

The drugs haven't helped, I'd go so far as to say the reflux significantly worsened. I had faith in the Gaviscon Advance having read how it works but that hasn't made any difference either. I have monitored everything I eat and drink and can't find anything that triggers it with the possible exception of bread, and I may be grasping at straws there. Certainly coffee, alcohol, spicy food etc don't trigger it and ginger, acidophillus, apple cider vinegar don't help. It does seem to be cyclical - I'll have a week or so of decreased symptoms then it gradally works up again to two or 3 weeks of hell. No heartburn, and the reflux is almost always upright, no problems sleeping...just the other 17 hours a day! The ENT was brusque on my return visit and said that, aside from speech therapy, there was nothing more he could do for me. This can't go on, though. At it's worst it makes me tearful and desperate at work and speech therapy isn't going to stop me spitting up into a whole toilet roll each day, or reduce the other symptoms. I'm also worried my teeth will rot and I fear for my job. Has anyone experienced this with the same pattern/lack of triggers etc? I would love to hear any positive experiences that don't just repeat the same old same old, ie, raise the bed 6 inches, dos and donts with food etc.

    Hi Greg

    Good points.

I am a firm believer that pressure from below opens the LES and that it doesn't necessarily have

structural weakness. (That's why I think your book chap Norm may be wrong. Who's fighting? I just don't agree with the hypothesis.)

My feeling is that transition is also a problem and that the pyloric sphincter at the bottom of the stomach

can be in spasm (as part of stress and linked with IBS) not letting food & gas pass through normally

causing pressure which opens the LES ( I don't know exactly which gas) and aspirates gastric products upward to the airways.

We know aspirated Pepsin is the main culprit in Airway reflux. A Peptest will prove you have it from your

saliva. I have been testing myself this way for 2 years now and had good data.

We also know Pepsin is created in the stomach to break down protein. More protein equals more Pepsin

All I would say is that logic would lead us to the conclusion the less protein or/and more alkaline will help generate less Pepsin for aspiration.

Hell I like a good steak like the next man and if taking a bit of Alkaline water will let me do it, bring it on.

I was a carnivore, eating not only meat but lots of fresh garden vegetables-not bought from a store-but in my back yard. I also was fed the processed food that was being introduced in the 1960s--margarine,etc.

I have been vegan for 30 years.

I have always had this refux problem-over 40 years- I am 55 years old--56 this january.

I don't eat enough protein. I have a rice protein powder-20 grams of protein a day in the morning.

I don't eat meat, dairy, junk food, processed foods like margarine or Cambell's canned soup.

So, why do I have this "disease"?

This is one of the problems I see . I had a mainly vegetarian diet when I got My sore throat. Salads lots of veg but far far too many carbs.

I think we have to understand there are so many chemical reactions that take place throughout our gut that there can be many causes for the same problem. It is a marvelous part of our anatmomy but there are many reasons it can go wrong. I still believe i will find the right path .(im having a good day today smile sometimes I get so nervous about cancer. I read in some places the risk is high in others it is low. Dont know what to think) When i hear some people have been having this for decades i think my self lucky.

I don't know what reasons you are vegetarian and i really don't want to tread on any toes here really im just trying to offer some help. I would try to up your protein and lower your carbs including vege carbs ( sweet veg can be a killer too) see how it goes for a few days. May be some fish. I like a lot of what JPT says (must stop coffeee lol) I lowered my daily pain after a week upping protein and lowering carbs. There is a way to do this as a veggie but it is harder. I went down to 25 carbs net a day for a week. then I went up the next week to 40 then i cocked up and felt better so i drank beer and ate tomatoes and low and behold i am back on the pain wagon.

You could adapt parts of both or try one then the other. If you do lets hear from you on here. There are so many people in pain and it really helps to speak to u guys. Im driving my wife nuts wink

what do you know about Aloe cure? I was reading an article in our news paper today, and there was a doctor talking about Aloe; now we don't want to drink aloe, but he was a firm believer that 2 ounces of aloe will relieve all reflux, heart burn, esophagus reflux and it will not return. He also said we drink it twice a day and it coats and protects all our cells from acid. It's called aloecure.

    Hi everyone,

I have been drinking water that I found called Iceland, it is Ph 8.04, and 8.88. Do you think this will help? I read how we should drink water that is high in Ph. Just wondering, and can I over due it with too much Ph? thanks

Thanks to all for the advice. I think it is highly worthwhile to share ideas in this way.

I have just started juicing - thanks to my son, and I am feeling a lot better! All types of veg seem to work well - spinach, carrots, sweet potato, broccoli, beetroot plus lots of apples which are in abundance at the moment, and can be found on the pavement outside people's houses who have excess. I have bought quite an expensive juicer - but if it continues to work then great. Has anyone else tried this?

    Cheers,

    Jon

    Hi everybody,

JPT suggested alkaline water, does sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), would do the same trick?

So I have acid taste in mouth after eating or drinking (except water) immediately, and it lasts about a hour.

After I think it gets quite normal but not that normal as it should by, because even on fasting a half day I get exes of salvia due strange taste in mouth.

In mornings I get burned mouth feeling, and swollen nasal airways. Don't get heartburn a lot, just occasionally when overeating. I get a lot of belching, but I don't know does it from air I breathe because of exes swallowing. And sometimes I get shortness of breathe after eating, especially a lot.

One time I even get scared really bad, and cant even sit down for two hours. I Am 23 yo, and had this symptoms for few years.

In teens days I have drinked alcohol in huge amounts, and my eating habits was... I should say it wasn't any.

Now I manage to change my live stile, (not perfect, but ten times better), but symptoms is there.

So I guess it is typical silent reflux symptoms I am having?

Other think. Could someone explain why, when I drink water I don't get symptoms to get worse (or better), but when drink something with sugar, instantly I feel acidic taste in my mouth for about 10-15 minutes.

And last question, how does acid comes all the way to the nose airways? Why does gravity doesn't doing the job? I can thin only one reason. Because of increased abdominal pressure, which is pushing the stomach substance up, or there is other mechanism behind this?

Best luck, and thanks for replays!

I think we have to eat only food that are alkaline. That means fruits and veggies. I am going to learn how to sprout chickpeas and lentils. I am vegan-and still have the problem. I love grains--bread, oatmeal, etc-even though I don't eat the regular foods that everyone else eats. My body is toooooo acidic. That has to change-I know that but this vegan doesn't like salads-lol.

Hello JPT, I would like to share a similar problem which i have been experiencing for the last 2 and half years. Basically i am into teaching profession and all of a sudden i found that i am not comfortable lecturing in the class and visited a GI. I was diagnosed with peptic esophagitis grade A and i am on rabezporole 20mg daily once but still the problem is not resolved. I am desperately trying to find a solution for my difficulty in speakig but still could not find one. Doctors here in India dont even understand what is LPR all about. I am totally depressed and yes i wanted to try you good theory of ph water. Please let me know where can i find this alkaline water. Thanks in advance waiting for your reply.

I have finally had an endoscopy which showed a 5cm sliding hiatal hernia but also significant bile reflux. The report makes no mention of an ulcer or any other cause. A nurse talked me through the report and also showed me photos of the bile and my normal oesophegus.

I am so utterly miserable and depressed that I told myself if a HH was found, I would have the surgery. Radical as it is, my life simply isn’t worth living right now. But the bile reflux would still be there, just causing problems below my diaphragm instead of above it! I have to stop the damage to my throat, mouth and teeth so I need the surgery but the bile is a complication I hadn’t anticipated.

Anyone got any insight on this?

Hi All. I am new to forums such as these and think they are brilliant. Apologies in advance but I thought I had read all of this thread but only realised a short while ago that there isn't just one page

After 2 (poss 3 thinking way back) episodes of LPR where I was put on omeprazole I have taken a more responsible approach and suspect I may be getting somewhere. I believe it has more to do with problems with the upper sphincter (US) and vapourised pectic enzyme than the lower one (LS) refluxing acid as I, along with many others, do not suffer from heartburn.

I am self-trialling simple life-style changes that might improve the efficiency of my US but at the same time minimise indigestion at the LS. The bottom line is that I am making significant progress in the short time (less than a week) that I have been tackling this problem.

For starters I am gargling loads of the time and esp if I have coughed or had a meal or felt discomfort in my throat – ended up in paroxysms of coughing and gagging when I first tried this. I persevered and can now gargle far more effectively than before – suspect my swallowing technique is improving which has to be a big plus and that I have gained relief by the act of gargling. I see this as a simple but hugely effective way of strengthening the US. I also incorporate exercises suggested for singers.

I try to cough or belch gently and no longer eat within the 3 hours prior to retiring – the general guidelines for Gerd are spot on in my view…

I chew 1cm square slivers of root ginger 15 mins before eating to stimulate digestion and don’t drink for up to an hour afterwards. Singers take liquorice and that was my latest addition to my arsenal – rice grain size pieces – using natural good old high PH saliva to bath my throat – lots of benefits again. Haven’t tried the 8.7 ph water yet but look forward to trying that approach – baking soda solution was horrible….

I currently use Kefir milk and that seems no problem which is a relief as it suggests I can get away with hard cheese which I love. Also managing baked potatoes which are a big comfort as they are cheap, tasty and filling.

To add greater variety and cheap protein to my diet I intend to try legumes – sprouting and Kefir - to reduce gas…

I have been sleeping better the last couple of nights (over 8 hours straight night before last!) than I have for years and this morning I woke up without a mass of phlegm to deal with – wonderful! Would love to think this trend continues BUT I know it is unlikely to be without its problems. Yesterday I made some Spelt bread and lashed on some butter – WOW! Another slice no problem and then just one more with Bovril oh, happy days! Not that long after I had the runs so will experiment later with just one slice of Bovril and bread and see what happens… wish me luck.

Getting quite optomistic here but know that patience is a big part of the solution – very annoying to have my voice “go” a short while ago when boasting of my progress to a friend – but at least when I shut up things calmed down quickly.

Hope we all get this nightmare sorted.

    Cheers Den

    Hi JPT,

Many thanks for your contributions to this topic. I only discovered them a short time ago and have been trying your ideas out with definite benefits. I haven't found a supplier of suitable Mineral water so I've been using Sodium Bicarbonate. In solution with tapwater, 1 Teaspoonful to half a litre gives a pH of about 10 (and the chemistry is such that dilution doesn't make much difference). As this is on the strong side I don't drink very much, I gargle and swallow a few sips and 'snuffle' some to get it to all accessible regions. Have you found a supplier of a suitable mineral water? That would probably be more convenient.

    Best wishes

    Hello JPT,

So nice of you that you promptly replied to my curious query. As i have already narrated my problem to a extent. I would Like to invite your attention that this lpr is really a very horrible and

painful experience. I am totally shattered and at loggerheads unable to cope with the horrible situation, i found a new job but that too is in jeopardy all credit to LPR, as narrated doctors in india are totally ignorant

about the situation. You mentioned about your email but i am not able to trace it may be the moderator has removed it for some reason. is there any way we can contact personally. Your help in this regard will atleast give solace to a extent.

Note: What is this private service i couldnot understand

    with love and regards
