Lump feeling and gurgling in throat when swallowing

Since I had an endoscopy four months ago I have had a lump sensation and tightness in my throat on and off and now for the past few days I experience a gurgling sensation when I swallow at first it was just when i swallowed water immediately after it would feel like air gurgling up but now it’s also when I swallow saliva. It seems to go away when I lay down. It feels like an air bubble or burp is stuck in my throat. I’ve been on nexium for six weeks due to acid reflux but it doesn’t help with these symptoms. I also get pressure in my ears when this happens. Also this all started four months ago when I woke up with extreme pressure below my breastbone that caused me a lot of panic and I was unable to eat anything because of the discomfort. The pressure isn’t as bad in chest now but the lump in throat is bad and I don’t know if they are related like the pressure moved up into my throat. I also get burning pains and tenderness in my upper back and shoulder blades and sometimes feel it while I’m eating and drinking not afterwards. Has anyone had these symptoms and was it something other then acid reflux and did it finally go away? I’m really feeling depressed and hopeless that I will have to live like this for the rest of my life.

    Hi chandra,

This is AMAZING ! I can totally relate, I've had this exact problem since the last 9 years now. Every time I swallow saliva, then there is a gurgle coming up a few seconds after. During the night everything calms down.

I've passed a barium swallow and H. Pylori breath test which showed nothing.

What tests did you pass? Which ones were negative/positive?

I'm trying to understand what you changed as best as I can and I have a few questions :

    • You changed your diet and ate smaller portions : What did your new diet consist of?
    • You took a good 100 billions probiotics : What frequency and what kind?
    • You took a PPI : Which one and what frequency ?
    • You started to take some coconut water : Is this what you took instead of regular water? And you didn't drink anything else?
    • Walked after lunch/dinner : Did you start an exercise plan or just some walking?

    Thanks a million times!

      Hi Luisen,

When seeing a doctor you should be clear in telling him/her whether you have:

      1. A lump in the throat (called "globus sensation") and/or
      2. Difficulty swallowing (called "dysphagia")

These are two very different conditions.

Also, you say you're on Nexium. Are you taking it as prescribed by the manufacturer (on the information sheet accompanying the meds or online)? I say this because I was on Nexium for 7 months and followed my doctor's advice which was vague as to WHEN to take the meds. After they failed to do anything for me in 7 months other than make me fatter I looked into the matter and established I was taking them at the WRONG time!

An endoscopy is a good start.

      Hey Barney

I got the Nexium aren't prescribed I got them over the counter.

The gurgling sensation I had it before, from time to time since I was a kid. But in the last 3 weeks its almost constantly every day It feels like an air bubble or burp stuck in my throat. But the thing is that I can't burb normally I have to stick my fingers in my mouth to burb.

When the air bubble comes out its like a little burb but sound like a "Froggy Sound"

As the problem is in your throat, rather than lower down, I suggest you see an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist before a you have an endoscopy by the gastroenterologist.

Have you seen an ENT or gastroenterologist in the last 2 weeks?

If so, have they considered upper esophageal sphincter dysfunction as the cause?

yes I have the same problems sometimes I get sores in the mouth I have a history of dental infection and areas around my ribs spleen liver hurt and the pain corresponds with my inhalation if I hold my breath it stops a sharp cutting pain. I got a oral swab test that showed a bit of staph aureus and I took two antibiotics my mouth symptoms went away and throat sounds and lump too only to come back after antibiotics were done.
