Lump in throat which goes when I burp

Hi I am sure this is the same as most people on here, but recently started to have a painful lump in my throat, when I touch the base of the throat it feels really sore and I feel like I need to burp and once I do the pain eases off considerably. I feel sore in the chest area and have suffered with gerd/acid for most of my life on esomeprazole recently asked to decrease dose from 20mg to 40mg but since the symptoms told to go back, until I read a lot of the things on here was convinced I have oesohpogeul cancer although GP said as I had a scope within 10 years highly unlikely and I can eat and not being sick. I have just had a chest infection and that is like the pain I still feel like I have burnt inside throat and down into chest area. It does not go with gaviscon but only when I burp as it feels like a big bubble. I am going to try probiotics and alkaline water as mentioned in the forums, my main reason for posting is that other people say their throat is not painful where mine is especially when I press it, does anyone have this pain.

I have similar symptoms.  Ihave no pain but if I press on my throat it does feel a little sore. For me it feels like it is close to my windpipe, like a want to cough but coughing does seem to "hit the spot" or give any relief.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I will not survive the week.

Hi all thanks for your replies. That is exactly how it is a lumpy sensation in the windpipe and sore with a tickly cough that does not relieve the symptoms, it feels like I still have a chest infection, you know when you cough too much and the front of your chest is sore. Like you the bad pain is only there when I press, but I feel a slight soreness all the time. I am trying to eat slightly softer foods as bread is the main culprit that seeems to get stuck but am not being sick or anything like that. I cannot believe this is all due to acid. I am now back on 40mg of esomeprazole but taking it a few hours apart. I have been like this for about 2 weeks now and awaiting another gp appointment next week. I said if it is cancer I could be dead in week, but her answer was you had a scope within the last 10 years nothing grows that quick - one hell of a statement to make to my mind. Am just trying to ignore it and have started today on yakult, not sure what it does but anything is worth a try.

Moonbuggy has the gp said why you feel you cannot breath, because I feel like that for a while after eating before I burp and I really start to panic until the throat seems to clear.

      Hi Youngatheart

Unfortunately reflux can play havoc on your breathing. The ENT scoped my throat a while back and said it was really red. I guess it causes swelling and problems with your vocal cords, (and all this after the reflux op) smile

I have been following all your comments with interest. I have the same symptoms which have become progressively worse over the last few months. I have always taken Lansoprazole as I am on anti inflammatory meds for arthritis. Now I have this awful pounding sensation in my chest as well as the sensation of a lump in my throat. I have been to my GP who has advised me to stop the lansoprazole for 2 weeks and then send a sample to test for helicobacter. I don't want to go for the camera option!

I wouldn't worry too much about getting an endoscopy, I've heard it is no big deal and you will probably feel better knowing the results.

Hi my symptons only became worse after reducing my dosage from 40m to 20mg, it was working well until I started to take loads of medication for tonsilitis and anti biotics for a chest infection, bad start to the year. I have been told to go back on 40mg, 20mg morning and 20mg night, but still getting this horrible lump at least some part of most days. I am also feeling the need to cough with it and my heart beats a bit faster then settles down, nothing is coming up. Saw GP earlier in the week and am being sent for a blood test for thyroid, let's see what happens.

Yes I get that heart beating faster feeling, it's horrible! I'm struggling without the Lansoprazole and bought some Gaviscon, which doesn't help at all. The worst time of day for me is first thing in the morning when I feel very sick, although have not vomited.

Hi, well Saturday was hell, banging heart, pain in left breast then right, pressure in middle and back, you name it I had it. Thought cannot go on like this, popping pain killers, acid tablets etc so I tried this yesterday, 40mg esomeprazole followed by yakult. Had 2 slices toast with camomile tea, then a digestive enzyme tablets (probiotics) ASDA make in green box. Had plain food through out the day then after lunch had a ranitadine followed by another camomile tea, then before bed had 2 gaviscon advance. No this is not a miracle just something I tried, ie no pain killers no acidic foods. By late afternoon gnawing pain in middle of chest and top of stomach had settled down and this morning feel the best I have felt for ages, so today will follow the same process and see, I sometimes think our systems are so out of whack and inflamed they need to settle and start over if you see what I mean, will update tonight and see how it goes. Still have niggling pain in chest and back but nothing compared to what it was Saturday.

Thanks for the encouragement. Sorry  haven't replied before now. Not that much to report really. I was tested positive for Helicobacter Pylori and have had a course of two strong antibiotics. Hasn't really made any difference and am now waiting a couple of weeks to see my gp again. She said I may need a further course and if that does not resolve it the n an endoscopy is advisable. I did speak to a friend who had it and he said that he was sedated beforehand and really did not know much about it, so that cheered me up! I still have the lump in throat feeling, burping a lot but otherwise so far I can eat and have a good appetite and no pain.

Hello youngatheart! I've been following your posts and I have to say I match your symptoms and it's a real struggle going through all of this while living a normal life. Would you like to give an update on whether probiotics helped your case? And if yes are you taking them now as well.

      Hello Quasam,

Probiotics only will not help. Some of your stomach organ is producing acid which is reversing back to your neck through one way pipe. if this continues you will have inflammation further.

you require to be in diet for a while & specifically after food you should not sleep. atleast 1 hour gap should be there. Night time take less easy digestable food.

I had the same issue and done the same as above and recovered a while back. meanwhile i used to drink ginger tea after dinner to help my digestion.

Hi, in a word NO the probiotics stopped helping after a while and to be honest made my stomach sore.  I stopped taking them regularly and now only take for a week or so when I feel uncomfortable, which helps but not sure if it is just wishful thinking. I did try some with pectin in as the symptoms for too much acid are the same as too little apparently so see whether I had too little and not too much but they really burnt my stomach virtually immediately after taking just one. I am trying to ignore it but have now found that I am getting extremely anxious about eating as sometimes food seems to get stuck. Sandwiches are a nightmare as is any sort of meat. When I am not concentrating on eating I am ok, but the minute I think about it I panic that I am going to choke. Take care

      Hi youngatheart1,

90% of this issue related to candida & food indigestion, you need to be in diet to recover. Just probiotics will not help.

try to follow herbal diets, with turmeric milk in night and raw garlic for 2 weeks this will solve additionally you can try ginger+pepper juice. this will also heal your stomach.

Do not take anything cold, sweet & fizzy.

      Hope this helps.

I am just hanging on to do this stool specimen and if that does n't give results, I expect it will have to be the camera. Interesting he thinks it could be thyroid. Let us know how that goes.

Hi not be on for a while, it was not thyroid and full bloods came back ok so GP not bothered. My lump in throat has now become a pain in back after eating, it moves from side to but mainly in the middle. it does help to burp, but still comes back. It became worse after eating an apple about 2 weeks ago and feels like a pill or something is stuck. I am still eating well, not being sick so just know if I go back to GP they will dismiss it. Still scared it is oesphogeul cancer. Have ordered some DGL licorice tablets and started taking probiotic tablets. If no change will go back to gp. The only other thing I am thinking is since January I have had 4 different types of antibiotics for various infections and wonder if they have caused some sort of damage. Glad you are ok

Thanks for asking, to be honest I am still no further forward apart from that it is not thyroid. The lump in throat appears to have slipped to centre of chest, the burning has gone and it just feels like a giant painful bubble inside. I have been having lots of weird palpitations and heart attack sort of pains and have had loads of tests, ECG's, X Ray etc all clear, I am waiting for a heart CT scan as the stress test I did showed a small anomoly, although the cardiologist said that happens a lot in women with last breasts and thinks it will be normal, no one thinks it is anything other than GERD which I am still struggling to believe, if it is what sort of damage is it doing to my insides if I feel so much pain, I have not been offered a scope or anything other than a higher dose ranitidine. The pounding comes and goes and the cardiologist looked at me as if I was mad and said "it lasts how long" when I said it had been banging and painful for days. He looked very bemused. So is it GERD, thyroid or heart related I am still no nearer finding out, all I do know is that I am fed up being in pain somewhere in my chest. What is happening with you now?

Hello, i really do understand your fears as i have some similar symptoms. Have been battling heartburn/indigestion symptoms for a few years and getting worse each year. It started with acid coming up into throat for which i took antacids, was worse if i bent over to pick things up and sometimes came up throat when in bed at night. Then got occasional flare ups when i got severe burning sensation from throat all the way through stomach and bowels.Mostly settled down but now suffer from bloating and unable to eat large meals, pains in chest and between shoulder blades and all around upper rib cage area. Burping does help. I got really worried by chest pains and ended up in A&E a couple of years ago with stabbing chest pains but test showed heart ok. Reluctantly tried omeprozole but after a few days got disturbed vision and told they could be cause so stopped. N

Sorry hit wrong button, but to continue. This year started with swallowing problems, a feeling of lump in throat and discomfort so now waiting for an endoscope test. Going to have to opt for sedation as know i will panic.  The weird pains around upper chest areas are really getting me down and the thought that it could be throat cancer or heart related keeps creeping into my mind.  I have tried to cut fats and sweet things from my diet and eat small meals. I have been told i have primary hyperparathyroidism but is not severe so only thing i take is vitamin D as i am deficent.  From reading everyones posts it sounds as though the acid problem is something that gets worse the longer it goes on.
