Manipulation scheduled. I'm apprehensive.

I saw my surgeon yesterday and he took one look at my bend and said he would manipulate it, but not until I was at 12 weeks so that is in another 3 weeks from now. In the meantime I've stopped physical therapy so that I will still have some left for after the manipulation. I had got to 105 under force, but I think that under my own steam I'm only making about 90. My apprehension comes from the fact that his nurse told me they do it under a general rather than an epidural - because it's such a 'rough' procedure. My heart doesn't do well under general anesthesia.
I'm so tired of all the ups and downs - a big up because I made 105 and then a big down because I couldn't keep it. Feeling up because the medication is working one day and then down because the pain is back the next. And now I don't know whether I should be up or down - up perhaps because it might finally get bent and down because of the anesthesia worry.
I don't really have a question. I just know that you are the only people I can talk to who understand.

I have my manipulation scheduled for tomorrow morning. I am frightened. I am in pain every day anyway, I don't know why more pain should matter. This knee operation has taken almost 3 months of my life away. I am saddened, scared and just plain tired of this pain. I want my life back!!

At least you are getting there now. I hope the manipulation didn't give you too much pain.
All the best, keep in touch

Well it's different pain. I used to play women's soccer and was a goalie up into my mid 40s. That's how I feel - my quads are hurting. I am walking better and besides the hydrocodiene, I am on a steroid pack for the inflammation. I was on one right after surgery and the prednisone helped. I had PT today and my manipulation loosened up a bit. Think she only got me to 105-8 but every session will improve. The doc got me to 130 under sedation yesterday. He told me anything around 120 is considered a success. I am 67, look 57 and act 47 so I want this success and to be able to hold with my hubby again by this Summer. I am very tired today after the brief anesthesia yesterday. My pain fluctuates between a 3-4 right now but I just spent over an hour grocery shopping. Ugh. Now to ice and rest. Take care.

Yes, Jenny, I have been having PT 3x a week and exercising every day. My body just makes scar tissue. 6-8% of TKR patients need manipulation. It's nothing my Dr., PT or I did. It's just my body. Like some people have keloid issues. No fluid, just tissue that will be broken up tomorrow.
