Mattress toppers

This may sound trivial, but being an insomniac anyway managing to sleep on my back after the op is one of the things I'm really worrying about.  I've been looking at mattress toppers and wondered if anyone else had bought one and if it helped.  I know I'll just have to suck up and put up, but nevertheless I'm trying to think of things to make me more comfortable.  I use a 'v' pillow and have bought extra pillows for my knees, feet and wherever else I might need them.  I've read through the discussions on here about sleeping but wondering whether to buy a mattress topper or not.  Quite expensive if it's not going to be helpful.

Happy New Year to you all xxx

One thing I can tell you to buy is a sheepskin square for your feet , as your heels get really sore ( & mustn't get bed sore) from being on the bed, pushing etc . It really helps! I have a tempur bed that we hate ( & don't sleep in) & a normal one. Neither made a difference for the first week or so , then miraculously I started to sleep like the dead on my back. I'm 8 weeks PO, still on my back. Only last on either side a while then hurts a bit. Best of luck. Happy New Year. X

Was thinking the mattress topper would help with sore heels but the sheepskin square is an excellent idea, thanks. x

I have a mattress topper and love it. I wear foot socks in bed

    which stops me getting cramp.

I find a cushion- sized pillow best for between the legs.

At the beginning I had a pillow each side of my body, which lifted

the bedclothes slightly and kept me snug in a little box.

I also take half a 1 mg lorenin to sleep.

Thanks.  I had some Amazon vouchers for Christmas and wondering where to spend them.  I might go for the mattress topper.

I have Nitrazepam to sleep x

I found big square cushions helped me, with my pilllows propped on them all around , its surprising how quick you get used to it. I also have a topper, makes it softer tomlay on.

    good luck.

    Hi CelsB

I use a memory foam mattress topper BUT ALSO I lie on top of a duvet.

Then I have another lightish duvet on top of me. confused

At the moment I am sleeping half the night on my side (unoperated) with a pillow to support operated knee and thigh.  Then about 2-3am I transfer to lying on my back with the pillow behind knees. This does seem to work for me but I am 3 months post op now.Hope this helps.

Not trivial at all! Sleep is very important, and I discovered that after getting so very little sleep post-op. I had always slept on my side, and have never been able to sleep on my back, because I always woke up, unable to breathe. I probably have sleep apnea, although never officially diagnosed. It wasn't a problem before, because I could always sleep on my side.

But after the op, when forbidden to side sleep for 6 weeks, it became a real problem. I slept sitting up for 6 weeks, propped up in bed with lots of pillows. I sent my sister out to get me an expensive mattress topper after about a week, and, while it helped enormously to make me more comfortable when sitting up in bed, I'm not sure I got more sleep because of it. Probably had 5 hours a night, interrupted, for those 6 weeks. (Only got an hour or two a night at the hospital.) Always took a short nap or two during the day, still sitting up, of course. Now that I am side-sleeping again, I am loving the topper because I am so much more comfortable and sleeping very well again.

Bottom line, do everything you can think of beforehand that might help you sleep better post-op.

Thanks Annie, I've ordered one now.  I've tried to practice sleeping on my back to get used to it but it ain't happening!  I know its something everyone has problems with so I won't be alone.  When I had my children the nurses used to make us lie for an hour on our stomachs after lunch.  Thats the way I usually sleep although not so easy now with my gammy hip.  I usually sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees.

I also ordered a full length 'v' plllow just because.  Christmas vouchers spent now and if I'm more comfortable it'll be well worth it biggrin

I'm 5 weeks post op and no longer sleep on my back all the time

Whilst in hospital I slept with the back of the bed elevated which helped hugely when it came to sleeping, so I tried to re-create it at home. I put some big cushions under the mattress to prop it up and with that and a pillow under my legs, I slept better than I thought I would.

I too am not the greatest sleeper and that has continued. I always have a book on the go and have found it to be a saviour at 2 am.

Really good luck and I hope all goes well for you.
