Maxillary sinus cyst!

Posted , 60 users are following.

Is there anybody else on here that has a maxillary sinus cyst and symptoms? I suffer with terrible headaches and facial pain, ear pain to name a few, but my ENT doctor thinks that the cyst is most definitely not the cause of my symptoms!! It's a long story but I can't begin to tell you how frustrating it is! Not being believed. I am in the U.K. and wondered if there was anyone else in the same situation? If you had it removed, what were the circumstances and who was your ENT surgeon?

Thanks in advance 😊

Glad l found this discussion, thought l was going crazy. ive had terrible pain in my left eye for almost 3 months now. My eye specialist took me through 9 eye tests and suspected l had Optic Neuritis. I went for a second opinion before treatment and went through the sames eye tests, thereafter an MRI scan which showed a cyst in the maxillary sinus! Going for my first appointment with the ENT specialist tomorrow!.

Hi there, I am in UK thought i would post as i found this in a search and am currently going through the exact same problem. My left cheek became swollen 2 days ago. the pain is excruciating. It is right where ny nostril joins my cheek just above my front gums. There is no mucus coming out of my nose but i threw up yellow bile this morning so im guessig it is draining to my throat rather than through my nose. I went to my gp today as this is the 5th time I have had it this year only this time it is alot worse and more intense. GP has referred me to E&T which could take weeks. However I have not long woken up due to being knocked out by painkillers and my face is now much worse and I have just noticed a huge lump on my gum has appeared right where its painful. The nhs over here are terrible. they dont take you seriously i am very worried and going to go down to the emergency hospital tomorrow. not sure if they will do anything but the symptons are unbearable and now I am very worried about this lump.

Can anyone shed any light on my situation?

Hi....sounds to me like you could have a cyst. If it’s effecting your teeth or gums, I would go o to your dentists as soon as you’re able..

How are you doing now? Please let me know how you're getting on xx

Have you had any luck on your symptoms and was it the cyst? I have the same problem and it is debilitating at time. I dont know why the ENT doesnt just remove the cyst in my nose to make sure it is not the problem. Mine is huge.

I had my ENT follow up appointment last week. I again went in with lots of valid evidence to suggest that a maxillary cysts do cause symptoms, and he still dismissed it all. He always states that they are nothing to worry about and the risks are too high in taking out. I think this is just a money saving exercise as I can’t for the life of me think why they are so adamant in not removing it.

I’m not going to give up though. I am trying to find alternative therapies as a start...like a Apple cider vinegar, even castor oil has been known to shrink cysts. But how the hell do I reach the cyst? I’m so desperate to get rid of it, I cannot begin to tell you how much it is affecting me now. I’m literally in pain 24/7.

I’m also trying to find out if going to Europe would be an option and paying privately. I have no money though, so a bit of a dream really. I’m so fed up of feeling like this though, that all I can do is keep fighting, keep researching and hope that some very kind ENT consultant will believe me and remove the damn thing.  I utterly sympathise with you as i truly know what you’re going through. It’s torture!!

Let’s keep this forum going and we can fight this together!!

I’m so happy this forum exist. I’ve had migraines since high school. I’m 28 now. Well they were getting worse to the point I was getting thunderclap migraines. Well I got tired of taking my meds. If they work I’m severely nauseous for the next 3-4 days and really tired. Migraines already cause tiredness. So I asked my doctor if he could give me a referral for an MRI before switching medications. Come to find out I have the cyst but it’s occupying my right side. He’s going to refer me to a theist, nose, and ear doctor. But when he told me yesterday about it, and reading all your comments, it all makes sense now.

Hi. I have been reading this thread and I too have a large cyst in my Maxillary Sinus. It got picked by the Hospital Dentist when he did some x rays. I am having surgery next Monday and I am dreading it. I also have to have wisdom teeth out and 8 other crumbling teeth and retained roots   I will be a mess   My teeth are awful because of taking meds for years that cause me to have a permanent dry mouth and no drinking doesn’t help either. At times I have no saliva at all. I am not in pain like some of you poor people but I do get the headaches, and a feeling of pressure around my eye and socket. Turning my eyes left or right is uncomfortable and I think it’s pressure. My eye waters sometimes and when I wake up in the morning my face is often swollen.  If you’re struggling to get seen by ent try your dentist they certainly take it seriously and I was referred to the maxillary surgeon in Hospital. I hope all of you manage to find the right treatment and manage to get pain free soon

      Hi Sue!

Keep us all posted on your progress lovely!! I hope the surgery went well? It’d be interesting to know if your pressure and headaches have gone.

I went to see maxillofacial and they told me only ENT would consider removing a cyst, and even then it’d be unlikely. I’m going round in circles a bit as nobody seems to want to help me. I’m still adamant that if they removed my cyst, my symptoms would go. My symptoms are

      Chronic post nasal drip

      Sore throat

Pain in cheek and roof of mouth ( where the blummin cyst is!)

      Ear pain

      Eye pain

Lots of pressure and fullness on the left side.

      All very mucch localised pain!

Anyway....let’s hope you’re doing okay!? Let us know how you’re feeling?  Xx

I know this was posted a year ago, but I just found out I have a cyst on my right side cheek on the sinus. I've been trying to get more info on it the Dr said it'll only cause pressure there, but I've read different things saying it can cause other problems. I found out about it with an MRI that I had done bc I've been having headaches non stop for the past 4 years. The neurologist is set now that my headaches are stress related but added exercise, more water and meds I've been taking hasn't even eased it any. So wondering if anyone who had a sinus cyst and had headaches then had the cyst removed if that helped or got rid of the headaches?

      Hi Ruth

I’m still battling with ENT!! I too have had headaches prodominately on the left side and my cyst is on the left side!! I also have a chronic post nasal drip and can’t clear my throat and sinuses most mornings. When it builds up I notice the headache gets worse. Recently I was prescribed antibiotics for tonsillitis and taking them got rid of my pain! I explained this to ENT and he pretty much said it was a placebo!!! I told him that clearly my cyst is obviously getting infected all the time and the antibiotics helped this. It’s the infection that causes pain and the size of the cyst causing the fullness and pressure. He quite adamantly dismissed this and has now referred me to neurology!! I feel like I’m going round in circles here.

Please keep this thread going everyone. We need to help one another and get some results.

My only hope now is either a private referral to ENT but I’d need to find an ENT surgeon who would actually take this out!!! Or I hope and pray that this cyst spontaneously bursts!!

I am in so much pain all the time, it’s exhausting.

Ruth - I sincerely hope you have a better time with this and some success in getting rid of your cyst.

      Keep me posted lovely! Xx

Hi, have been suffering from severe headaches for approx 12 weeks,in that time I have been admitted to hospital on 2 occasions with a blood pressure of 220/120.on each occasion they said it was my blood presure causing the headaches, and I continually asked if it be the headaches causing the blood pressure to rise,i have seen a different doctor every week I have gone back,a mri showed that my sinus was infected, after 12 weeks of headaches every day and crying with pain I was sent for a ct scan which shows the cyst and polyps,i now have to see a entdoctor, who I have already seen 2 times,I will get back to you with his reply,i have to wait a month ,so I have a month of pain to cope with.

I've suffered from chronic post nasal drip for 3 years, and the smell that emanates from my nose have been persistent. When I get aboard a commercial vehicle, all the passengers starts sniffing and coughing. Prior to being prompted by some family and friends about the very offensive smell, I had been a serious marijuana smoker and sometimes I did cigarettes. The mucous is usually clear but it makes me experience bad breath both from the nose and mouth.

I visited the ENT and she prescribed Ciprolex (ciproflaxin+tinadazole), otrivin nasal spray, and an anti-inflammatory. But the bad odour symptom lingered on after administering these medications (even when my nose and sinuses are dry). I'm able to manage the mouth odour with the use of hydrogen peroxide twice a day but I can't deal with this horrific nasal odour diffusing everywhere I go. My quality of life has significantly been compromised.

I've been researching for 3 years and have had no answer.

Can anyone offer me some assistance?

      Hi Buddha

Have you had a CT scan or MRI offered to you? I have chronic post nasal drip and I’ve read in many places that this can be caused  by a deviated septum. I have a deviated septum and I believe big this and my maxillary sinus cyst are to blame. Occasionally I also get bad breath. It’s the bacteria forming in he back of your throat from all the mucus constanting draining. If you have sinus issues this will be thicker and possibly infected too.

I’d recommend trying to get your sinuses checked with a CT scan and ask them specifically to check if you have a deviated septum. Basically it’s just a slightly wonky nose! You may not actually notice it from looking at you but inside the septum can be wonky. Hope this makes sense. I smoke sometimes too but do not believe this is to blame as every smoker on the planet would have the same problems. It won’t help your sinuses that’s for sure but it won’t be the sole cause of your issues. Keep me posted! 😊
