Medication

How long have you been taking your medication after THR? I'm on 60mg codeine, two paracetemols, four times a day and 3 ibruprofen a day. It will be 4 weeks on Wed for me.

I am trying to cut down these last couple of days by cutting my two middle doses down to 30mg codeine but keeping the rest.

But I don't know if your supposed to keep the full amount for longer or not. It is a bit achy now, sometimes have bad pain.

I cut the meds down as soon as I was able. The codine was after 1 week but I had the odd night with co-codimol to help me sleep. The onl meds I kept going was the blood thinning ones - which lasted 5 weeks.

However, I was very lucky in that I did not have any pain. I would suggest that you should keep the pain at bay as the body has enough to deal with.

I have just been for a walk, it is still achy but wore off when I was nearly home. 0.2 mile not much I used my pedometer to see what I'm doing. Up to now it's not too bad, will try a few days with them cut down and see what happens.

    Hi Lynn,

    i agree with michael.

4 weeks is still early, and it's important to keep your pain at bay to make sure you have optimum mobility.

you could check in with your GP, and I assume you'll be having a 6 week check with your consultant?

No 6 week check, it's 10 weeks, will see him in May.  Did see him when I went to see about the weeping but it was a fleeting visit. Never thought about the meds at the time.

Aww I'm pleased I thought I was being a wuss, it's helped me to know I'm not the only one still on them.

Let us know how you get on,

I'm still sleeping on my back until the consultant gives the go ahead to sleep on my side.  I don't want to at the moment anyhow because it's still weeping.

Hi Lynn, I'm 4 days into my second week.

This morning I took one cocodamol 30/500 instead of two.  I can't take Ibuprofen because of other health issues.  My pain seems under contol.  Early days yet I know and I don't plan to be a hero.  It was just as an experiment because if you don't try you don't know.  I did notice yesterday that I wasn't clock watching to see when my next dose was.

My pain is mostly stiffness, sore wound and the odd sharp pain if I make an awkard movement.  Not too bad at all.

I've tried twice to cut down, the first time I had to go back on because of groin pain, the second was when I had overdone it.  Just wondering if it's in my head, but would like to finish them before I run out, but listen to my body too.

I'm sure we all heal at different rates and the amount of 'damage' done during each operation will be different.  If I need them I will take them as long as I have to.  I have just taken another one cocodamol 30/500.  I reckon if I take one every four hours instead of two at longer intervals it might be better.  I did start taking 1 1/2 at one point but then got confused as to how many I'd had.

      I'm easily confused rolleyes

They told me to take all of them 4 times a day and then try cutting back but I can't remember when.

Ohh, don't get confused over tablets don't want you overdosing.eek

I wasn't given any advice at all about pain medication when I was discharged.  Being only on cocdamol probably makes it easier..

Possible, Do you find it strong enough?
    • Posted

Yes.  They're 30/500 so if I take two it's the same as 2 x 30mg codeine and 2 x 500 mg Paracetamol, and that's all I was on in hospital after the reaction to the dreaded morphine.  I will gradually cut it down to 1 tablet, with the option of taking 2 if I want to.

Aww, that's good, agree the morphine was bad but They give me anti sickness stuff and I was ok then, yuk hate being sick.

I have cut down to 30mg for the two middle ones and it seems to be ok for now, will give it another couple of days and start to cut some extra out.I think your supposed to keep your morning and night ones till last and then the night one.
