How long have you been taking your medication after THR? I'm on 60mg codeine, two paracetemols, four times a day and 3 ibruprofen a day. It will be 4 weeks on Wed for me.

I am trying to cut down these last couple of days by cutting my two middle doses down to 30mg codeine but keeping the rest.

But I don't know if your supposed to keep the full amount for longer or not. It is a bit achy now, sometimes have bad pain.

    Hi Lynn

I stopped the codeine at about day 5 but I am still taking paracetamol and ibuprofen as and when needed. Everyone deals with pain differently , you must keep yourself comfortable and not stop the painkillers too soon . THR pain came as a surprise to me because I was able to have both my babies with no pain relief at all but after this op I enjoyed a whole smorgasbord of drugs lol .

    Keep comfy

Not good with pain, but saying that I did for quite a few years because I didn't know it was arthritis and I just carried on and because I was not one for taking tablets I didn't, even when it left me in tears.  I guess I don't want to go there again.

Your brave no pain relief for your babies, I had it for two of mine but the middle one I had at home in the bathroom, left it too late lol

My first , my son was breech right through pregnancy never moved, I went in on the Wednesday night and had a breech forceps delivery on the Friday. At first they said I went in too early, the contractions were 5 mins apart but they changed, kept me in. Anyhow second baby, daughter, I told hubby I'm not going in too early, went for a bath and waters broke, sent him to phone, we didn't have one but the public one was broke, heard him coming upstairs, he fell lol but just made it to catch her. Then he scared the doc by knocking on his window, he lived just up from us lol Third baby in hospital. What we go through eh.lol

Do you know what you're taking the meds for - paracetamol for fever? Ibuprofen for swelling? Codeine for pain relief?

If you know what each one is for which one do you feel you don't need or can cut back on?

I don't really have a clue but that is the way I am thinking about cutting back.

I'm on 2 slow release oxy, up to 4 fast acting oxy (for bad pain or before exercise) 1 aspirin for blood thinning and 2 paracetamol up to 4 times a day if needed.

I've cut back on the fast acting oxy and the paracetamol.

My walking didn't seem as uncomfortable as now, think it must of been with the car, hopefully it will wear off.

I learned after my first hip that I needed pain relief full time to get me through the first 4 weeks.

I am at this point now and have been experimenting with going a bit longer between doses. On a day when I am in the house I don't take very much now but have a co-codamol if I am going to walk outside.

I think you kind of know when you don't need so much. My hip feels mre 'solid' now, more stable and comfortable but if it started to feel uncomfortable I would go back to a set timetable again. Being painfree is essential to good healing but if uou are feeling strong then maybe it is time to experiment - you can always go back on them.

      Hi Kate cheesygrin

I have my little notebook beside me to write down what I have and when.  My head is like a sieve.

I'll be 4 weeks on Wednesday.  At the moment I seem ok with half the codeine dose for the middle two.

The pain I had from Friday seems to have gone, I have had two slightly longer walks today and no problems, still walking with two sticks, I feel I limp with one at the moment, when physio phoned she said just to keep trying with one but don't go straight to it if limping.  It does not feel strong enough yet.

Are you using 'proper' NHS sticks?  I had problems with them, they caused a repetitive strain injury to my shoulder from thumping them down all the time.  I had to have private physioon my shoulder and switched to using hiking sticks (like ski poles) at her suggestion.

Yes, I am, the proper grey sticks, I don't have any problem with my shoulders, my hands did get sore but that seems to be abating now, my own stick has a better handle and I could walk miles with it, it helped with the arthritis too.to start with.

I haven't walked very far with them yet though.  Did they measure against your wrist for the right height? Must admit they are heavy, can here me coming, clip, clip lol

My problem started when I started going onlong walks with just one stick.  The constant banging down gave me RSI in my shoulder. And yes, they measured them carefully for me.  I used thick gloves with them.

The hiking sticks have built-in shock absorbers, but I find I use them more for balancing than weight bearing.  But when I get tired, I can then lean on them.
