    The Leary
    • Posted

The Leary was the man who went round the streets at dusk with a lit taper on a long pole which also had a hook near the top end. With that he turned on the gas and lit the mantle in the street lights, one by one.

at dawn he covered the same route and turned off the gas  on each street light.

I was born into the closing years of town gas, gas street lighting and gas light in my first primary school. The school janitor (the janny) performed the office of Leary for the school.

Brilliant, Tiswas. He was usually a self appointed volunteer and covered the houses in a smallish area.

I think they used to be called GUARD and have transmogrified into TRAIN MANAGER. The duties are not identical however. So it may be acceptable to say GUARD has disappeared.
