Menopause and paresthesia?
Posted , 157 users are following.
I would love some input on my strange symptoms.
I'm 50 years old. For many years, my periods have been very close together, very long, and with 2-3 days of exceptionally heavy flow. I know this weird period stuff is normal in peri menopause. Then, after one of these "normal" (for me!) periods in April, I didn't have one for 60 days - and when I did it again, for the first time in years I didn't have the heavy days. That was over 60 days ago and so far I haven't had another one since.
My FSH level in a blood test two weeks ago was very high - 117.
I tell you all this just as a little background - I already know I'm obvioulsy in peri menopause and nearing actual menopause.
But here's the reason I'm posting. Starting mid-May, all of a sudden I started having very consistent paresthesia in my feet and legs - a mixture of tingling, pins and needles, slight burning, static sensation outside skin, pricking... no numbness. It has been with me every single day since then - 3 months now. It's worse at some times than others, but always present to some degree (and usually very annoying and concerning). It is definitely in BOTH legs and feet.
I'm slightly low in B12 and hoped that was the cause - however, after 10 B12 shots over 5 weeks, I have no improvement. I've had various other blood tests, all normal. I had an MRI of my spine (all 3 sections) yesterday and it showed nothing. No MS lesions, no transverse myelitis lesions, no compression/stenosis, no disc problems, no tumors. Now I need to get a brain MRI and of course I'm concerned this one could show MS. However, doctors have told me - and my research confirms this - it would be most unusal for MS to present with paresthesia equally on BOTH sides, stay around consistently for so long without going away even briefly, etc... And I have zero other MS sypmtoms.
So assuming (hopefully!) that's NOT what it is, then it's becoming a real mystery. I've done some reading that suggests these weird tingling sensations CAN be caused by menopause - due to extreme hormone imbalance. Also, my hormones could have been out of whack for a long time what with all my irregular periods, AND about 12 years ago I had my hormone levels checked and supposedly at that time I had the estrogen level of "a post-menopausal woman." At the time my doc said that was a little odd, but ok, no cause for concern. Anyway, I say all this as a way to say perhaps I've been a little bit of a unique case as far as my hormones.
Does anyone think these symptoms COULD actually be attributed to menopause? Or has anyone had something similar happen to them? I've asked my doctor a couple times and she immediately says no, menopause couldn't cause this. I realize it's not typical, but is it possible? So far I have no hot flashes or night sweats, thank heavens, but maybe this is my own personal type of menopause hell?!
Any insight would be so very much appreciated. Maybe I'm grasping at straws, but it DOES seem an interesting coincidence that all these issues have come up right as I'm going through this different timing in my periods, obvious continued hormone changes, etc...
Thanks in advance for any help people might be able to offer.
I think I'm going insane. If this could be blamed on menopause, I would be SO relieved and could deal with it!!!

I still have some tingling/pinching mostly in hands and feet. It has been going on for about 12 weeks now. It’s gotten better but it’s still there. Had MRI of brain and cervical spine. Have 2 bulging discs in neck but not bad according to docs. Ive been doing some research and I’m now taking 600mg of alpha lapoic acid and 220 mg of magnesium for nerve issues in case that’s what it is? I don’t know if minor bulging discs could do this but I was to my ob last week and he blew me off when I asked if it could be hormonal. Said it would only happen around my cycle if that were the case? I go back to neurologist on the 12th? I’m so scared it might be CIDP? But I think it would have gotten worse? I just don’t know?

Hi Dawn & Tara
Not sure if you saw my original post a week or so ago? I have today just had more blood tests & MRI spine thoracic & MRI Spine lumbar & sacral? The neurological does not think my symptoms are hormone related?
However I saw my GP who has given me Hrt which I am going to take after I get the results of the above tests.
These symptoms drive me mad!!
I should get results next week?
It seems we all go down the same route and no one can give us an answer but reading other people's comments makes me feel it's our hormones.

No one ever said it was perimenapause Only doctors who finally agreed with me was my reproductive doc. She said estrogen fluctuations are happening and we don’t have enough at perimenapause well at least for me
Because I had premature ovarian failure

I've had it for 3 months now. I have it continuesly in my right leg but pins and needles/tingling in other parts of my body including my head face and chest at different times! My hands go numb sometimes in the night too along with my right leg experiencing numbness sometimes when I walk. Every test is clear, just waiting results now of lower back mri?
It's really getting to me feeling like this. Good luck with the 2nd opinion.

Hi there - I am just going to throw this out there to all of you suffering from tingling/burning sensations in your extremities...are any of you also on Blood pressure RX’s? I am really trying to get to the root of what is causing this for me & since I get no answers from drs, I am wondering if there is a correlation with the B/P RX’s during menopause - just wondering - thank you all n advance -

I’m on low dose of Metroprolol. Not sure if there’s s connection? I’m ready to just give up and ignore it but I have been considering going to an endocrinologist that I take my teenage daughter to to see if he could shed some light on it?

Hi Tara - Thanks for responding - do u get just tingling in your extremities and or the burning sensation as well - So after being on this forum, I was convinced that low hormones were causing this for me, but then I went to a hormone specialist who claims she has never heard of these symptoms for menopause & told me to look at my B/P RX as the culprit - Ugh!

Thank you Jane - Yes, I am fairly convinced drs really don’t know anything about menopause...geez, my dr specialized in hormone replacement & laughed when I said I thought I had experienced all 66 symptoms of menopause like she had never heard that before! My post will probably get deleted if I mention the name of the endocrinologist that totally believes menopause affects cholesterol & b/p - she has a famous client who has written books on hormones if that gives you a clue who the dr is - I just wish drs would get educated on this mystery menopause -

Hi Tara
I had results last week of MRI lower back and nothing going on. Although the tingling, numbness vibrations and weird sensations continue I must admit they don't seem as bad. I don't take blood pressure medications.
The neurologist does not think this is menopause related and wants further tests done now :-(
I've been so up & down emotionally too so I feel this has got to be hormone related Tara.

Hi I know this is to the other dawn but I also got my mri bk it shows I have a herniated disc in my neck I have the report so it doesn't say of this can be a cause my neuro app to discuss this is in July ,what I've read online it doesn't cause tingling in the legs just arms and mine started in my feet upwards

Hi Dawn, my first two discs have arthritis. It's strange that many have posted neck issues with the tingling. Mine started on the shin and spread sporadically on different parts of my body. This lasted about seven weeks. I did work with a chiropractor. It did make a difference. So maybe there is a link between the neck and tingling. It's surprising how things are connected.

Hi Tara
No idea as had various scans & so many blood tests done already and every thing comes back ok!! I'm convinced that it's my hormones Tara and once I've seen the neurologist again will be giving Hrt a try!!
Just so fed up with this tingling :-((

I get it! I’m going to an endocrinologist on Tuesday June 26th. This is insane! Starts to feel like it’s gonna go away and then....BAM there it is again! All other docs dismiss that it’s a hormone issue so I’m going to find out for sure....I hope

Good luck with the appointment and if you don't mind let us know if endocrinologist thinks there is a connection with the tingling?
Many thanks

Hi Debra
I have sharp prickling in hands, forearms. Tingling in face and lower legs. My blood pressure is 'perfect', so I don't think that is the cause for me. Hope that helps.

Hi Cyclist - I have the same sensations, I refer to it as tingling, but I used to get “electric zaps” in my hands & feet & I also experience a burning sensation on my back & chest & neck - so much fun!
