Metoprolol. Tapering off. Side effects. Horrible drug!

Metoprolol has been the worst medication I've ever been on. After a year of not knowing what was making me sick we found out it's this poison. I have never suffered so much and now after so much I found out it was this medication which I was given for hypertension. I've always ran but high and I believe I in fact have white coast hypertension I have MS so it's hard to know what's wha. Unclearly this drug ruined my life. I was 5"8 145lbs after losing a lot of weight from the pesky steroids I was given initially for MS then this drug in one year (despite healthy eating) packed on 30lbs and gave me a list of horrific side effects to include swelling chest pressure burning in arms sleep disturbances extreme dizziness depression I never thought possible. I'm slowly tapering off as no one warns you how risky stopping this drug is. Into week 2 of taper and it's hard

I have a tough time with MS but was never this sick

Also doctors hand this crap out like nothing despite FDA warnings. Anyone else go through this? I can't wait to be rid of this poison in me. My anxiety is off the charts

I can't believe I agreed to take this Med. I trusted my doctor. Never again. Have been to ER very sick 3 times. Even ER doc said it's not a good Med to treat HTN of any kind

Thank you for your time

i was given metoprolol back in April 2019 because I passed out after waking up with shortness of breath and dizziness. During my hospital stay, they stated that my blood pressure and heart rate were high, as I did suffer a head wound due to the fall. I was given an IV of something to help reduce my heart rate and one of their ekg ratings showed a possible spike and an afib reading. when i talked to the cardiologist i was put on metoprolol 25mg for the next few months, including an event monitor. during the next few months, i never showed another reading of afib and the side effects, including palpitations, neck tightness, and continual fatigue continued. after telling my doctor about it he made me stay on it until july when he evaluated my monitor and said everything was ok and we hard stopped the medication. my side effects still are ongoing so im hoping for everything to stop soon. it was only 25mg daily and im just 32 years old. what should i do now?

    • Posted

he did not taper me at all. he claimed that it was the lowest dosage possible and a hard stop would be ok. he was not great for me at all (i plan on never seeing him again)

while i have felt negative effects since stopping it two weeks ago or so, i have not needed to see a doctor or the er as the side effects do taper off through the day or night. as of writing, i mainly feel the issue with palpitation sensation, throat issues, and sometimes early fatigue, like i have to sleep earlier than i normally do.

my Gp thinks im also manifesting some symptoms due to anxiety, with everything that has happened up to this point. while i dont disagree with that as my sensations dissipate suddenly or after some time, i do feel like something else is happening. my work life is somewhat normal, being in retail. my blood pressure is normal 127/77 last checked and heart rate averages 82bpm

the only medicine im taking because of a neurological issue was recommended doses of coq10 (100mg) and b12 (1000mcg) im asking my gp for a multivitamin to give myself a more well rounded supplement of vitamins and still hep with the two mentioned

I had horrible side effects with metoprolol. I made the switch to Atenolol and the side effects have been less. I do feel your body goes through adjustment period. I am not a doctor but i was on 25mg and my doctor said it would need to be tapered due to high rebound effects. he said since he was switching me to Atenolol and it's another less potent beta blocker I did not need to taper the metoprolol since they are same class. I also feel at times high anxiety due to all the issues that have happened in such a short time this month was when I was hospitalized. it's been 3.5 hard weeks.

I have researched this medication and felt awful taking it. why I begged my doctor to switch me. I also decided to try CBD oil from a reputable store and it does not have any THC in it. I know effects are different for everyone but it does help me. I hope you find relief and I think talking to people that are going through same thing helps a lot.

it was weird that he wanted me to be on one without any previous history or reported symptoms of heart issues or afib and absolutely none since my hospital stay. my gp was also confused it happen in the first place and ive been talking to him regularly to record my internal feelings of either anxiety driven symptoms or actual symptoms. i have not taken any other medicine or was recommended to after we did the compete stop, no tapering.

i have a new job coming up soon so maybe transitioning out of retail will help as well cause of course angry people daily will raise anxiety. my wife has used cbd cream because of her arthritis and i use it occasionally for my neck cause it does hurt and can stiffen up. a new pillow is my next goal as well, as i used a tempurpedic for so long and am looking for a suitable replacement

thanks for the help here. even with this uncertainly so far this chat is helping me and all the forum posts are also helping as well. i will be starting my third week off this medication and im hoping that the worst has stopped so i may be aboe to work and live without worrying myself to a false or real heart issue

I had no previous history but the cardiologist believes I mask hypertension. He said certain times I spike and it's not all day. he believes due to family history I have it. He said your body masks it and has gone undiagnosed due to readings at my primary doctor and hospital stay all normal. I also had no symptoms before so they never picked up on hypertension. I had a couple of spikes at home as he had me recording it. i had some chest pain and after he checked me said it was not my heart so he put me on metoprolol to help with blood pressure. I can tell you it even gave me depression even though I had no history of depression. I felt so tired, flu like symptoms, nauseous, and was having nightmares. I have read stopping metoprolol is very difficult and take a while to feel normal again. It's possible its anxiety after going through all of this but my GP has known me over a decade and said he wants to rule out everything before he makes that diagnosis as he has never know me to have anxiety. he did say that chronic stress can come out all of a sudden as anxiety and even panic attacks. I have had chronic stress for several years. He told me another possibility is esophageal spasms as they can mimic heart pain. He is referring me to a GI to get me checked. Keep talking to your doctor and insist they listen to your symptoms. Most doctors want to label anxiety because they are not finding anything but you know your body best. I had to ask for my doctor to switch me off metoprolol or else he may have kept me on since my bp was all normal and those numbers make them happy. I told him I dont care about numbers I care how I feel. good luck to you and hope you find relief soon. wishing you the best.

    Hello everyone

I was started on 50 mg twice a day in the hospital at the end of June for blood pressure

Was on that dose for one week until I spoke with my doctor who said the hospital had jumped the

gun that I have never been diagnosed with high blood pressure. He said that my BP was only

a little high and proper diet and increase in exercise was all I needed. I then started a wean of

25 mg twice a day (1/2 50) mg, did that for 2 weeks and then started 25 mg split 12.5 mg twice

a day on my 5th day as we speak and my HB jumps over a 100 when I move about so I spend

a lot of time sitting or laying in bed. did not have this prob until I started doing 1/2 25 mg 2x a day

five days ago. My BP runs low a lot and I get dizzy sometimes stays around 97 -108 /70

    any thoughts would be helpful

Read back on this forum. It helped me a lot. My advise would be don't check your heart rate too often and just ride it out, unless you feel something very out of the norm. The rebound symptoms can be horrible, it sounds like you are doing pretty well compared to some of us, so don't worry too much. It will eventually get better. Best wishes.

    • Posted

I was also put on metoprolol 12.5mg and I couldn't stand side effects and had low blood pressure so I held just 2 doses and had rebound and ended up in ER. I asked my doctor to taper me off but instead switched me to atenolol 12.5mg daily. the side effects are not as bad and he said since they are in same class I would not get rebound. I didnt but I still felt horrible as I waited for metoprolol leave my system. I am going on week 3 since the switch and today is the day that I finally feel less side effects of medication. Let your doctor know how you are feeling. as my doctor explained metoprolol is very potent compared to atenolol. I only had rebound with metoprolol but not switching to atenolol although it seems like my body didnt like the switch as side effects were very bad. I felt like I had the flu. I wish you the best.

hey I've been weaning off metoprolol 4 for about a month . it's been hell. I'm down to 12.5 once a day. I ended up in the hospital yesterday because my blood pressure was 167/150. I've had so many side effects on it. extreme weakness. in bed for 3 months. horrible gas, stabbing pains in body, muscles hurt, headache, depression,. thought I was dying. now coming off it im having the worst anxiety I ever had in my life. I didn't want to go on anything else but since my pressure went so high the doctor started my on biolystic today so we will see how that goes. im so scared because I've been so shaky and nauseous and felt like i was gonna pass out. anxiety and adrenaline has been horrible. I can't take much more... I had to choose but to try something else. I'm really scared. how is everyone else doing with this?

    • Posted

I have never tried bystolic but have heard it's better than metoprolol and with less side effects. the nausea and weakness is the worst. bystolic is another beta blocker so my doctor said if you stay with same class the rebound would not occur. it didnt when I switched but I still get side effects with the atenolol. more so the 1st 2 weeks. today is almost short of 3 weeks and the nausea isnt as bad and weakness is slowly going away. he told me to move more which I am trying everyday and it has helped. I have found staying in bed makes you so much worse. everyone kept saying rest and relax so I did everyday felt weaker. now that I am making effort to walk and least 30 min in morning it has helped. I do that in morning then evening another 15 to 20 minutes. I couldn't do that before so the walking is definitely helping. I could barely get in my car and drive down the street and became so overwhelmed with fatigue. metoprolol is awful and I will never allow them to ever give it to me again. it seems my body is slowly adjusting to atenolol but still have some side effects which are not nearly as bad as metoprolol. metoprolol made me feel like I had the flu, nausea, weakness, depression felt so strong. i did not suffer from depression prior to that medication. i suspect metoprolol sticks around in body for a while so the side effects do not improve until maybe week 3. I had them give me Zofran for nausea as it was so bad in the first 2 weeks. i haven't needed it for 2 days now . I still feel a little nausea upon waking but its tolerable that I dont need medication. I am glad they are switching you and I wish you the best.

today I started the bylostic. but I had my last dose of metropolol last night. I feel horrible. dizzy and shaky and weak. I feel like I'm gonna pass out. its scary because I feel like I'm dying. my anxiety is through the roof and I feel like I'm gonna puke. also very depressed and horrible body pain. its soooo scary because I couldn't get out of bed for 3 months on the metropolol. I can't go through that again. I seriously feel like I'm dying because I never had feelings like this before. I'm at my witts end... don't know what to do from here. now I'm gonna have these 2 meds in my body until the metropolol gets out of my system. and with my blood pressure being high I feel dizzy too....I'm just amess. dont know how much I can take..

    • Posted

try to relax. very hard I know. as I couldn't for several weeks. bystolic works fast and should bring your bp down fairly quickly. it's the metoprolol as I felt same. Go to ER if you need to be checked. I did 3 times. there is no shame in having a doctor check you and make sure they run all the tests and do not brush you off. the anxiety got so bad for me as well as I had a panic attack. I went to ER and they told me I needed to calm down. it's hard I know but staying in bed will make you worse. increase your activity little at a time. my cardiologist said the arteries stiffen as we sit and lay down causing bp to get much worse and heart works much harder to pump. increase but dont stress yourself. I felt horrible just walking around my house and felt like I was going to pass out. little by little his advice worked. if you feel very bad at least go get checked so they can advise what they think it is and ho from there.

    • Posted

so my blood pressure is down which is good but I feel so sick. very depressed, horrible headache and I feel like I'm gonna puke. I took my last dose of metropolol last night so hopefully its that and once it gets out of my system hopefully I'll start feeling better. I'm so scared that its this new medicine

    • Posted

I am sure it's the metoprolol. but if you still dont feel well go to ER. I felt the same in metoprolol and even for couple of weeks. I think it lingers in your body. it's been just couple of days that my anxiety has calmed down and nausea is going away. my muscles ached so bad. can I ask if your taking something for cholesterol?

    • Posted

no nothing for cholesterol. I'm just extremely depressed it scares me. I was just in the er last night and they act like it's in my head. the scary thing is that the bylostic reviews are way worse then the metropolol reviews. I can't keep living sick every day. I've already been bed ridden the last 3 months. ruined my vacation and all. the reason I'm worried its the new meds is because I never felt this depressed on it or this dizzy. thank you so much for talking to me because I feel like I have nobody that understands and I'm losing myself

    • Posted

I honestly dont think bystolic is worse than metoprolol. I never taken it but I know someone who changed to bystolic and said it was so much better. no problem keep talking to me if you need to. I felt same way and still not 100% yet.

    • Posted

Hi, Holly. are you now on what is called nebivolol here in uk, and, i think, bystolic in usa? what dose are you on? obviously it will be very difficult, to separate out the effects of the earlier drug. i did have lots of bad effects on nebivolol, had time clearing from my body then went back on it at a tiny dose, still have effects but i live (i have to , no choice) with them. it is supposed to have the least bad effects of the beta blockers, but as one consultant told me, it is 'still a beta blocker'. here in uk beta blockers are usually used to slow the pulse rate which may then stop a speeding heart and irregular beats (if not there are other drugs for rate control and anticoagulants for stroke prevention in case of afib). you dont mention these issues, only bp. have you tried the more usual bp meds?

    • Posted

I hope so girl. I hope it's just the metropolol. tonight is the first night I don't take it at all. I'm scared to see how this goes. if I don't have good luck on this drug I'm gonna ask for a non beta blocker. but then I'll have to do the weaning all over again so I'm praying this medicine will be good for me

    • Posted

yes that's what I'm on.. I can deal with side effects but not the ones where I'm bed ridden and can't function. I have no other problems. just blood pressure. I just had alot of side effects from the normal ones too so that a how I got to beta blockers. I'm one of those ppl who get side effects to everything..lol

    • Posted

I too get side effects with everything. beta blockers are the worst. my husband has been taking 50mg of Atenolol for years and said he doesnt think he gets the rebound because he quite often forgets to take it. I take 12.5mg and I feel every single side effects. it's getting better but not completely. I'm hoping the activity and trying to function more will make them go away. i hope after a month i dont even feel it anymore. the nausea has been so bad i lost 14 lbs now in a month. doesn't sound bad when I say that but consider that the 1st 9 came off in 6 days and I felt so sick I couldn't function just like you. both doctors my PCP and cardiologist say Atenolol is less potent and with less side effects. I still have them but not as severe as metoprolol. I would ask for some nausea medication and anti anxiety medication if you need to. I was given both but dont take anxiety medication but I have it just in case.

    • Posted

Thanks, like you describe i have had bad side effects with the other bp drugs, had a very bad number of months on normal small doses of nebivolol, but had to stop as felt too ill. Then i had months of bad rebound, even tho i was careful stopping. But a year later, having tried and retried more bp meds, i had to restart nebivolol. i found that going for much smaller doses than normal still worked for me, I can live with this so far, though still exhausted, & still get more skin problems , and bloating.

they gave me ativan but I take it so much that I'm afraid to get addicted. I can't even sleep because of my anxiety. it feels like I have severe adrenaline. I just keep hoping it gets better day by day

    • Posted

Ugh this is so depressing. I can't even live my life. I can't leave my house.i feel like I'm going mentally insane. I literally miss out on everything because I can't function to do anything. this is day 2 off the metropolol and on the bylostic.i just gotta keep pushing and hope things get better

    • Posted

I know what you mean. I hope you can push through it. didnt have such a great day yesterday. I was tempted to take pain medication and my anxiety was high but resisted. I dont want my body to get used to having to take it. I do think increasing activity may help with the depression. I noticed I was worse when I was in bed. if not maybe ask doctor to try antidepressant as Ativan will only cam you down not help with depression. my doctor said beta blockers are famous for causing depression but said metoprolol was number one with that. that's why I insisted to change it.

    • Posted

they prescribed me effexor but they don't want me taking it until I get the blood pressure meds straightened out because of me getting too many side effects

    • Posted

makes sense as still do not know if you will be ok with bystolic either. I am tempted to ask them to taper me off of beta blockers completely but scared of rebound and how long it will last. maybe a different kind of bp medication. he said if I come off beta blocker than I risk the rebound. I am only on 12.5mg daily so curious how he would taper that. 6.25mg and then stop. because I am already cutting 25mg in half to get 12.5mg. ugh that freaks me out that one dose down then stop. it doesnt seem the Ativan is helping you does it? I took one dose from ER and didnt like it so didn't touch it again.

    • Posted

it helps me somewhat. I was down to 12.5 once a day of metropolol from 50 a day before I was put on this. but then that's when my blood pressure spiked. I used to be on hydrochlorothiazide and I loved it. I wanted them to put me back on that but they wanted to try this first. I know that if I go back on hydro then I need to wean again because that's not a beta blocker. but the only side effect I had on that was peeing alot which I can deal with

    • Posted

weaning is hard. probably why my doctor wants me to get used to Atenolol. they do not make smaller tablets than 25mg which I already cut in half. so weaning would mean cutting them in 4s and they are tiny. I would prefer something other than a beta blockers too. funny thing is beta blockers are also used to treat anxiety but for me it causes it. I guess Ativan was not for me as i never wanted to try it again after 0.5mg I was given.

do you think the muscular pain is due to medication? I have terrible muscle pain daily. I only take tylenol and put biofreeze on my back and shoulders. I didn't have these pains before. curious what does ER say about your symptoms. I haven't gone in 12 days. the first 2 times they seemed concerned but last time seem to brush it off. it's hard to get through the day with all these symptoms. even though mine are not as bad they were they still bother me very much.

see I wanted them to put me on atenolol because it doesn't cross the blood brain barrier so I heard that was way better. but I see your having problems on it. also the last two days have been the worst. I dunno if it's the bystolic or the metroplolol since I stopped that two days ago. I heard alot of people still get the side effects of the metropolol for like a month so I hope it's that. my body pains are horrible today. I dont even go to the hospital anymore because she shrug me off and act like it's in my head. today my blood pressure spiked again to 145/110. do u know if it takes a couple days to start working on my blood pressure? I'm at breaking point

    • Posted

yes I'm still having problems on Atenolol. I wish I could stop it but afraid of rebound. Bystolic is supposed to work pretty quickly. but I know beta blockers take a couple of weeks for full effect is what I read. my bp is perfect and my HR is good but I still feel very off. i have bad muscular pain that doctor doesn't believe is Atenolol but what else is it. i didnt have pains before and now almost everyday. nausea isnt as bad. the 110 is really high. they should have given you a dose of something else to control your bp. like an as needed medication. ER doesnt believe it if they do not see it on the results.

    • Posted

dont get me wrong Atenolol is way more tolerable than metoprolol but still have bothersome symptoms. I get like a heavy feeling in my chest that want to keep me from moving around. like my heart rate reacts normal but still like I guess I am feeling it slow me down that causes me anxiety over it. it's such a small dose and get said I don't need anything else but I wish I could just taper off. I wonder if the metoprolol is still lingering in my system causing me these feelings. it's going on week 3 on Atenolol.

The thing is, those are the symptoms of any beta blocker! if you look on the net you will see the medical terms, but my doctor explained that essentially they block some of the adrenaline receptors you have. So your body is forced to slow down, i am on the lowest dose and always feel fatigued, but still if i marginally increase the dose because of heart rate problems in infections i get the clutching effect in my chest and in my throat, can't move, etc. But my heart rate is sorted out!

now I can't even sleep at night. i have chronic fatigue so I have no problem sleeping. now I can't. I'm awake every ten minutes. it's weird because my mom, dad, and aunt are on metropolol for years with no side effects. why are you on a beta blocker instead of a regular blood pressure med?

    • Posted

its keep keeping me awake all night and when I do fall asleep I have horrible nightmares. its crazy. my mom and dad have been on metroplolol for years and had no problems... not even fatigue and they are on like 200 mg a day. makes no sense to me. sometimes gotta give because I can't live my life with no sleep. I've tried sleeping pills, anxiety pills. nothing is helping

    • Posted

because I was hospitalized for chest pain they started me on metoprolol. they almost do it on everyone. baby asa , metoprolol, after my cath my cardiologist left me on them since he said I had minor issues undiagnosed hypertension and some plaque but not enough to do intervention on. he said meds are preventative and metoprolol would lower my bp and regulate my heart. so it would be beneficial to stay on. well I only stayed on it 7 days I think and begged him to take me off.. he said the rebound I experienced would happen again if I was to come off and I may end up in ER again so instead he switched me to atenolol said fewer side effects but I still have some. especially hits me an hour after I take medication and lasts like 5 to 7 hours. so pretty much all day. ugh. I am more functional on Atenolol than Metoprolol but dont like feeling like this everyday.

    • Posted

yes I figured it's the effects of beta blocker. does it ever get easier. my husband takes 50mg a day and I only take 12.5mg daily. he said he doesnt notice the symptoms. hes been on years. yes clutching effect is probably the best way to describe it and it's bad. how long have you been on it? how do you deal with the symptoms?

    • Posted

my muscles ache so bad sometimes. have you tried muscle relaxer as I was thinking of doing that hoping it will help and help me sleep at night as well.

    • Posted

I was on the metropolol for about 7 months and I just started the bystolic. . I have the muscle pain but its not too bad. the anxiety and adrenaline is what's killing me. I only sleep like an hour an night and I hate feeling like this. I'm on edge constantly feeling very anxious. I can't live like this. I'm also very depressed. I can't get out of bed and I'm so nasious. so I'm pretty much bed ridden. plus I have such a severe headache and the only thing that takes that away is in profen and im not supposed to take that. I just wanna give up. I'm afraid to get addicted to these anxiety meds cuz I'm taking it so much. I don't know what to do from here. these are side effects I can't deal with. I cry non stop

    • Posted

dont give up. something has to get better. fight for yourself. I can no longer take ibuprofen either due to baby asa. so I dont know if that is why my aches and pains are worse now. it used to be my go to medication when I had a flare. maybe talk to your doctor about effexor and starting it sooner. I think that it's worth a try to try to feel better. is the nausea medication helping? I took one today after not having nausea for a few days seems like it came back with a vengeance. go to ER as many times as you need to. can you walk at all?

    • Posted

I only took one week of metoprolol so I could not imagine taking 7 months. you are very strong. give yourself time and go to ER if you need to. I would really ask about starting antidepressant earlier. maybe as needed dose of bp med to keep your bp down.

I think everyone's different as well as there being a number of different types of beta blocker, and these have some different symptoms. Also it is difficult to compare doses, eg. compared with nebivolol 1.25mg, i dont know how 12.5 atenolol compares? I cant use it, anyway, as my GPs say it is an old medication and they cant prescribe it. nebivolol is possibly safer for those with mild asthma and allergies like me, because if does not block the receptors on the lungs so much, but i still got breathlessness at the higher dose, and still do a bit now and again on the low one., Re your query, apart from having less i did not deal gut , bloating, more infections, drier skin, temperature changes etc. and after some months i slowly tapered and stopped, then i was hit, two or 3 weeks in, with what i now know - but did not then - was a rebound of all the various hormones that had been blocked and from then till over 4-5 months on i felt so weird it was unbelievable, and if i got stressed/ worried my own adrenalin would kick in and add to the rebound and then it was weird weird weird. i was not myself at all, but eventually i was. i had to use it as 'pill in pocket' when i had symptoms, but i missed things once or twice, and had to re-start, but at a smaller dose.

    • Posted

Did you feel anxious? I get an awful anxious feeling sometimes during to the symptoms. how did you deal with it. the clutching, nausea, and muscle pain are the worst. I dont know if I should taper off. it will be very difficult seeing I am on low dose and they do not make pills lower than 25mg. i already cut in half. i feel like i should come off but fear the rebound will come on with a vengeance. I know everyone is different but I wish I was never put on this beta blocker.

I dont know if anyone is still active on here as its been quite a while. i had health issues before being put on metoprolol back in january 2020 due to a mystery onset of afib. i was on 50mg once a day until june 2021 and it was reduced to half due to low BP, fatique, dizziness, blurred vision and weakness. That didnt seem to do much so, about 2 months later, my doctor took me off of it completely. 4-5 days later, i woke up in the middle of the night with my heart racing, extreme shakiness and feeling like i was actually withdrawing from some hardcore drugs. it had me terrified. This Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021 will mark 8 weeks since being off of it and going through a rollercoaster of crazy & horrifying symptoms. ive dealt with dizziness, chest pains, anxiety, jitters, shaking, crazy adrenaline, tingling & numbness in my feet & lower legs, headaches for a week straight, heart palpitations and more. i went in today to see my cardiologist and i explained to her how ive been feeling after experiencing more palpitations over the last 5 days as well as another scary, shaky, heart racing episode last night. she explained that the meds are out of my body by now and the metoprolol wouldnt cause these kinds of symptoms which for a split second made me want to lose it but, after reading about so many others on here dealing with the SAME EXACT symptoms, i know it cant just be a coincidence. i just wish i knew how much longer this was going to last for because it is really messing up my mental state!
