Metoprolol. Tapering off. Side effects. Horrible drug!

Metoprolol has been the worst medication I've ever been on. After a year of not knowing what was making me sick we found out it's this poison. I have never suffered so much and now after so much I found out it was this medication which I was given for hypertension. I've always ran but high and I believe I in fact have white coast hypertension I have MS so it's hard to know what's wha. Unclearly this drug ruined my life. I was 5"8 145lbs after losing a lot of weight from the pesky steroids I was given initially for MS then this drug in one year (despite healthy eating) packed on 30lbs and gave me a list of horrific side effects to include swelling chest pressure burning in arms sleep disturbances extreme dizziness depression I never thought possible. I'm slowly tapering off as no one warns you how risky stopping this drug is. Into week 2 of taper and it's hard

I have a tough time with MS but was never this sick

Also doctors hand this crap out like nothing despite FDA warnings. Anyone else go through this? I can't wait to be rid of this poison in me. My anxiety is off the charts

I can't believe I agreed to take this Med. I trusted my doctor. Never again. Have been to ER very sick 3 times. Even ER doc said it's not a good Med to treat HTN of any kind

Thank you for your time

I missed 2 doses Monday and the rebound started like 2 days later my rested HB stays elevated and climbs to the 110's -120 once hitting 143 and had to go to the ER. I'm still splitting 25mg , 12.5 in the am and another 12.5 in the pm. My BP spikes as well in the high 130 's just last night it hit 167/93 and another

trip to the ER. I'm on my second week now and hope this rebound ends soon, dose anyone know how

long it last? The doctors don't seem to know what rebound is and I feel they think i am out of my mind lol.

you are not out of your mind. I dont know how long rebound last the literature says 14 days but people on thread say that it can last months. not to scare you but that is what they say. no it's like ER doctors dont know about rebound. ER doc had to call my cardiologist to ask what he thought it was. he told them rebound but it didnt seem like they were convinced and said it was probably anxiety.

I think only cardiologist know about rebound. other doctors seem oblivious to this. but I am sure cardiologist go by the books and think it lasts only 2 and most 3 weeks. i have read various people's experiences and say they went through it for months. I do not like metoprolol at all. they switched me to Atenolol while it's not as bad as metoprolol still have side effects. very bothersome but haven't had the rebound again.

Thank you for the fast reply

I am so scared of this rebound mess, wish I had never let them slip this on me.

Monday made one week since i missed taking this stupid drug and tomorrow

will be one week since the rebound started. I have an internal med Doc and he

seems clueless on all this. I asked him to help me wean and he just said take it

slow but could not tell me how to go about it. I hope this clears up over the next

week all was going smooth until I miss taking this junk last Monday. Hope my

heart beat returns to normal .

did they at least give you something in ER to help with heart rate?

No they gave me fluids and told me to follow up with my doc , who is out of town until Thursday

my rebound didn't last that long as it hit me the 3rd day like you because of 2 missed doses. then was back to normal on 4th day. cant say the same for side effects as those were so bad. I went to doctors office to switch me. he didnt taper me off metoprolol because he said I would still be on beta blocker so I didn't need to taper it. it may be the rebound still trying to get used to the atenolol just not elevated HR or BP anymore it's just feeling of feeling sick. I am not sure if metoprolol is still lingering or Atenolol giving me problems.

I'm on exactly 3 weeks since the switch. my muscles ache. I am nauseated all day long everyday. I have to take Zofran every other day or sometimes daily.

I see this thread has been active recently. I had hoped to get some insight about a year ago when I started tapering off of this HORRIBLE medication. I don't think

    anyone responded...

One year later, after months of anxiety and pure hell, I've been taking 12.5 mg of Metoprolol for about 4-5 months. When I began the taper (7/25/18) I was taking 62.5 mg daily. I was on said dose for a year and a half. I had too many side effects to post but the most significant and pronounced were fatigue, weight gain and profuse sweating (imagine hot flashes around the clock!)

A PA put me on this wicked med. I had AVNRT and high blood pressure due to social anxiety when I'd visit the PA's office.

I NEVER should have been put on this medication! It has singlehandedly ruined my quality of life. I am determined to get off of it completely but the anxiety without it is unbearable. I see a different PA (no Md's where I reside, small town USA). She wants me to replace the 12.5 Metoprolol with a Benzo (eye roll). I am looking into taking skullcap

    instead (it's herbal).

Thanks for listening/reading. Like most of you, no MD I have talked to about this gets the rebound or anxiety that comes with tapering off of this "medicine". IT IS POISON!

yes I agree pure poison. awful medication I wish I had known before starting it. I was only on it a little over a week I think and I begged doctor to taper me off. he instead switched me to atenolol. while it hasn't been as bad as metoprolol I still have problems with it as well. hoping side effects improve. skullcap. that's interesting will have to look into it

same here. I'm tapering too and the anxiety is horrible but its because beta blockers stop the adrenaline from going to your heart so when your taking that away your gonna be very anxious. so have you ever tried to stay off it for about a month. because once your off it awhile your body will adjust to deal with the adrenaline itself like it did before the medicine. but it takes time. see if you can get on something for anxiety just to get through the time until your body adjust back to normal. that's what I'm doing

  • Edited

    Yes that anxiety sucks!

I had it so bad this past week could not take it anymore so went back to my normal dose of 25 mg twice

a day gonna give it a week and the try 25 mg in the morning and 12.5 at night. I'm hoping by going

slower I can get around some of that anxiety.

Hi, i have not used metoprolol, only nebivolol, and did not have anxiety, just weirdness, highs, elation, really not feeling in the world at all, lots of mood changes, and other weird stuff. If you look through the whole of this thread you will see that you need to wean off much more slowly. And that the bb rebound was well known 40 years ago, tho it was thought to be a few weeks. Research was done on healthy fit young people, i think they were students. you can see on google. i am not young, or fit, and have other conditions, so i weaned off over 2 months from a tiny amount, yet i still had a weird time for months and months afterwards. if you are the type of person who reacts to drugs, or who has other conditions, especially autoimmune ones, then these difficulties may be more likely if the early part of this thread is anything to go by
